Many years ago - when most of the big betting action happened on course. When some of the Giants of the betting ring were plying their trade- They had a reputation to uphold as business was very competitive. Some of their slogans were - civility - honour- genuine- curtious etc. Well my experience at plumpton yesterday at the hands of one of the most well known on-course bookmakers -B D i will refer to him as. left me feeling that on course bookmakers have only themselves to blame for lack of business. 4 weeks ago i placed a small bet at fontwell on the last race when i returned to the betting ring to collect my winning amounting to just over £1000. B D the bookmaker i placed the bet with had gone home. As a regular of the southern racecourses for many years I didnt bother knowing that i would collect my winning at the next meetin i attended. Well due to adverse weather conditions I didnt make another appearance untill Plumpton yesterday. When i handed my slip to BD he looked at then and declared im afraid your too late to collect you will have to write in and make a claim. I then said ok if you cant pay me now i'll call back later - i was the told to wait as he had to telephone his son to check the bet. No attempt was made to phone anyone so i said please pay me my winiings or hand me my slip back. After a few moments delay he handed the slip to his assistant got down from his stool and walked away. The assistant then paid me out. It was a game playing act from a bookmaker clearly upset- thinking he had a sleeper in his hod for christmas.
sorry for my garbage typing but 1000 pounds is not a p1ss in the wind even in this day and age.as for the cretin above talking about when or where mr denis gets his money from surely thats purely his business and not yours.

to be honest i find its better to keep my interest strickly in my own financiaL DEALINGS RATHER THAN COMMENT ON OTHER PEOPLES.its a strange thing how people dislike people who are doing better than they are themselves.jealousy is a real sad thing, maybe just maybe if they concentrated on their own business they would become more successful.

To be fair to on course bookies i had a few similar experiences and all turned out ok as I got paid out.
I dont know of one who never paid up but I know there are a few who have gone AWOL with bigger liabilities than they could cover.
The worst offence against me on refusal to honour a whole transaction was LADBROKES,they did eventually. But my experience of on course bookies has been one of better customer service than most high street concerns.[smiley:crazy]

Barry Dennis seems a thoroughly decent man to me and if I ever go racing I will have a bet with him. In a mass of dross and mediocrity he seems to be a shining light and a man with unquestionable integrity. I hope jealousy isn't souring some of the nasty things some are posting. Barry should be the next Head of the BHA when Nickie baby moves on. There would be change then I can assure you.

Overheard telephone conversation at a Southern Racecourse..... "Hello, is that you son?" "Yes Dad, what's the problem?" "You know that w****r that didn't collect the grand the other month?" "Oh yes, I remember him well." "Well, the 'effer didn't go under a bus after all, he's here now." "Oh fishcakes, there goes the Christmas present for the missus." "See ya Dad." "See ya Son."

whooodiddles, why didn't you pick up your money after the race? Its common curtesy not to keep people hanging around and you being the son of a bookie should know that.

mamma - my son went to collect it - and the rep was not there- it was 20 mins after the race -and i was being entertained by the race sponsors- a really nice family who sponsored the race to celebrate their daughters birthday. I have collected winnings from on course bookmakers many times at the following meeting plus on occasions paid them owed loses when ive had a bad day and have bet on credit. Incidently my son also named Patrick backed the horse with Ladbrokes on the day and they had also vacated the course. He went into one of their shops 3 days later and collected his cash and got a free cup of tea and a smile. I am not complaining about the system or that i might have had to write to him to claim my winnings - It was the way i was spoken to and treated that has *issed me off.

Racecourse Bookmaking a lot tougher than sitting on your backside and moaning on here I would observe. Barry is a character and to this end there's probably ups and downs, I know there is with me, nooone's perfect. I do know they are hard working and entertaining and I'd rather wager with them than someone logged into a machine and arbing the lot. As far as the detail is concerned - its in question - he said she said I try to give a friendly and civil service and I believe most, including Barry himself do pretty well at this

Just a point for on course bookmakers- Punters put their cash in the hands of on course bookmakers every day of the week- not knowing if and when they might get any winning returns- let alone their cash outlay. why then don't bookmakers such as BD and others give the punter some kind of security regards possible fraud on their part. Surely race courses should hold some kind of deposit from on course bookmakers to ensure they can at least settle bets laid up to say £1000. BD has stated that he has been subject to fraud regarding fraudulent tickets. Does he not realise he issues the ticket for his protection not for the punters protection. I would suggest that punters should have some security in return regarding their investment. I would add i was never in any doubt that BD was going to settle the bet. But in return i think he should have the same respect for a customer who places £200 up front in return for a scrap of paper. MY point is betting has from day one been an honerable exchange of opinion and trust between 2 people. I was brought up by my father and his father that your reputation to pay your bookmaker or punter with respect and manners was the true mark of a man.

BD and his like are reliant on horserace owners and punters and they are very consistant and put their money up front-- many bookmakers would be on bread and dripping without us. my horses run at plumpton cost me £500 for the day ! BD might have paid £100 to stand up at plumpton to insult the goose that laid the golden egg. what gives him the right to be so ignorant towards the goose who laid a golden egg for his benefit.

I used to read some of Barrys comments on TRF before i was banned and he was brand new. I also listen to him sometimes if i hear him on the morning line or whatever. It's a high pressure game, and even when i was a 2 quid punter id lose my temper. I think some of you faceless eejits ought to be pleased if you've pissed a bookie off. I'd love to give big Barry a face like a well skelped ass if it meant i was taking wonga off him. Who gives a **** what manners they pay out with. At least he presents himself without hiding.

Thanks whodidd - at last some credit for those who do provide the required level service with the expected politeness. Being prepared to lay a bet be polite and pay with a smile is great when they are provided by the same bookmaker. When they dont the punters should vote with their feet. I know some punters who year on year bet with the same bookmaker at the Cheltenham Festival and pleasantries are exchanged on th Tuesday when they first meet after another year has passed. Fact.

I think whoodiddles has explained the situation very clearly.
He presented a late ticket, and had no problems with BD validating it.
Whoodiddles - who sounds like a gentleman, expected to be treated courteously.
BD who is not known for exchanging pleasantries, questioned Whoodiddles, who took exception.
BD made a call to his son (patrick or paddy if your're in Ireland), and begrudgingly handed over the dosh. He may have had a bad day? Who knows?
Whoodiddles wasn't happy either because BD never smiled when parting with the wad. This was ungentlemanly behaviour on BD's part.
The next time they meet, I suggest, BD shakes whoodiddles by the hand, and offers to buy him a beer. Whoodiddles accepts and invites him over to his estate for a pimms.

Glentoby- try taking a little more water with it- i didnt mess up with a small bet. I placed a bet that i did not redeem before the bookmakers rep went home-- 20minutes. That was mainly my choice as i had better things to do like welcome my horse back to the winners enclosure. I was planning to collect the returns at the next Fontwell meeting, quite normal practice. Unfortunately it was cancelled. The next race meeting in the area took place on Monday at plumpton. The only other way to claim money is to write to an address in cambridgeshire sending the receipt.I think in the interest of my own security, my best course of action is always to go back to the bookmaker ive had the transaction with. Please don't forget money in question belonged to me. My complaint is simply this, the bookmaker in question was arrogant and at first dismissive of my claim saying sorry your too late. He then asked me to write in to claim my winnings I said ok either pay me now later on today or return me my receipt. He was just being awkward and disrespectful and treating me in a dismissive way. I'm not a person who expects bookmaker to like me or befriend me,however i do expect civility from someone that i have trusted my money with.

Does anyone remember the late Pat Whelan from Merseyside? He was quite a good looking guy , often sporting a sun tan and regularly interviewed when the BBC was at the National. I only ever met him at his shop or dog tracks but he was clearly a 'personality' and more often than not willing to have a bit of banter with punters. He was as sharp as a razor when it came to business though.

Fully agree whoooodiddles. He married a former Miss Liverpool who was a bit of a stunner. The only thing I could never understand about him at the dog track was that his board excluded the favourite dog just showing odds on the other dogs "to win or be second to the favourite". Did this give him a massive advantage and exclude much risk? He used to chalk up similar things in his betting shop but for the horses. Whenever he used to be on holiday away from the dog track it never used to have the same atmosphere. I reckon the main thing he had about him is something you just can't buy...charisma.

Rekindled some memories now. I don't know if it's still the same but is there still the camaraderie amongst bookmakers these days. I well remember if one bookmaker took a big hit and didn't have enough money to pay out then the guy on the next stand would lend it to him until the next meeting. Does that still happen?

he is a grouch but he paid after checking,if it is civility you require then bet elsewhere as you must know what he is like even if he nicked a pony on the machine betting it back. His PR skills are more than adequate as every **** knows where he is standing before they can see him.If a bookie paid me in pound coins and told me to f*ck off and take my business elsewhere I would feel proud and defo not offended. It is 2010 and courtesies of yesteryear are declining rapidly, bet with those you consider Gents if you want a warm Thankyou and handshake as you draw.TBF the forum hasn't learned anything new with this post.

Answer to both your questions. Yes we do still bail each other out at times, you can only carry so much. Betting without, usually you have it to yourself so you can go your own figures & bet to your own opinion. For instance you don't have punters coming up & saying "It's such & such a price there so will you lay me that price".You do your own thing. As for the figures betting without the % is quite often better & you are providing an alternative market thus quite often generating a better turnover. You can usually get your thin uns in at a better % than those betting straight so once you've got those in you can in effect match those betting straight on the outers if you so wish.

PH am i missing something here? - are u saying that horse racing needs to come down a peg or two?- Do you mean horse racing should be more Primark , rather than PRADA ? If so, I'm not sure it would attract the backing of Sponsors -Owners - or Punters who contibute towards the sport we all love. It would be interesting to see if other passionate suppoters agree?

I don't think you're missing anything bar an apology or gracious payout. The sport is sinking fast and gone beyond Primark, more Aldi or Lidl if prizemoney is an indicator. Eventually the squeeze and overriding gloom and despair has filtered through to most who ply it as a business.Niceties and courtesies are minimal in life today, trade with those who treat you how you wish and expect to be treated. No doubt you offer the same politeness in return or else it wouldn't be such a bugbear.Racing is dying on its feet,by 2020 we recognise it.The betting terms, redundant racecourses and hopefully an off course tote monopoloy. Then and only then the likes of BD will endeavour to welcome, accept and pay with a smile as they want your repeat business.

BD,absolute legend is BD,the man BISMARKED Best Mate and the mighty Barracouda on the same Thursday of Cheltenham,as I watched CH 4 that morning I knew who I would be betting with that afternoon, to make matters worse for BD I backed Five winners including J Harringtons County hurdle winner (14/1) as I drew my money after the last BD was scraping the bottom of his hod I asked him if thats where he kept the spare BISMARK torpedoes I will not repeat the answer but I will say that as I walked away and looked back at him he was chuckling, he had done his B@ll@cks and he was still the same brash loud character we all love and some hate.A character who in my humble opinion is becoming rarer and rarer on our Racecourses.
