I got a free bet off him that was 1/9, and that lost as well!!  He used to have connections and owned some horse that landed some good touches, but that was 15 years ago.  He did put me on to Arcalis however and that paid off big time, winning big flat and jumps races.  Some of his "horse to follow" ran ok.  Haven't checked his site for a while, but I certainly wouldn't pay him these days.

He used to set up a once a year treble in the old days.

What was the name of that Czech-bred (?) thing that he plotted up for a big touch about 15 years ago? Might have been trained by Lord David Barron?

Blue and white colours, quite familiar on Northern courses 15 or 20 years ago, horses landed some nice gambles if memory serves correct.

used his service in early 90's , plenty of waffle and lots of horses which were often the paper favorite in the Sun.Didn't make any money with him.

He owned a few low grade horses in 90's with few trainers.Dirab was one of his best.

Landed big treble in 90's which was used in all his promos.

Still in business today.

For every mug that quits horseracing today , another one joins

Saddleholme I think one of them was called.  It ran at 9pm on a Saturday at Wolves.  I was on the dole having just left Uni, and I "put on" for a chap.  He gave me £500 to spread around for this horse at SP.  So I put his £500 and put £100 on for myself at 9/2.  I was seeing a bubbly 17yr old at the time and was inflagrante delicto with her when I noticed the time.  Checked on teletext and it was a photo!!  Well it won quite cosily apparently.  We went on Monday to the 15 bookies I spread the money round and I put the cah in the guys briefcase and he gave me £100 out of it.  What a result when you're getting £25 a week dole money.  What's more I backed it again on the Monday with 4 other winners and picked up another £200.  Happy Days!!

I think he had a few Czech breds tbh but I remember one of them winning half the track at Goodwood at 33/1.  Struggling with the name tbh.  Powder River with McKeown on was another, last leg of his treble and in his colours.

As others have said he was a very prominent advertiser in the 90s along with Fineform,The Winning Line and the various guises of John Blake. He had a number of horse in training, blue with white cross belts as i remember. But he did tip a lot of short priced horses as did Fineform that lost.

So many owners come and go in this game. The ones who start out as tipsters seem to have a few short glory years then fade away. The success is surely on fleeting. I wonder why?

I remember phoning up his line when I was a teenager and complete horse racing novice.

Phone in one hand and stopwatch in the other, as I reckoned that as long as he gave out his tip in the first two and half minutes, it wouldn't appear on my parent's itemised phone bill as ony calls above £1 did!!

Don't think he ever managed it though!!

Also, sent away a SAE so that I could get a booklet of hot horses to follow from him.

Newcombe took over a horse i think called Resonate from M Jarvis which was rated 90ish after a few months it bolted up off a mark in the low 60's at 25/1 ish ,maybe 33's?

This was about 10 years back . Theres other examples but my memory isn't what it used to be.
Report Shalimah September 17, 2010 12:29 AM BST
Resonate was indeed trained by M Jarvis but last time it ran in a Handicap for him finished
24th of 30 so he dropped it to a claimer where it beat a horse rated 20lbs inferior a shd.
True it dropped from 79 to 65 before it won for Tony but the horse was still badly handicapped when he got it, when it did win it was at 20/1 drifting from 16/1, hardly a sign of hoovering up.
The best horse Tony has this year has risen from an OR72 to OR92 since being previously trained
by D Nicholls
Report erhaab1965 September 17, 2010 1:17 AM BST
I wasn't specifically refering to Resonate , however that particular horse fell sharply in the ratings over a very short period of time and won at a big price , displaying the traits i mentioned.

I'm quite sure the horse was rated a lot higher when Newcombe took over.( if i'm wrong i appologise , just going off memory)

I know that other Newcombe/Gorrie horses won off extremely low ratings , the names i cannot recall.( Resonate not a Gorrie horse i think)

The horse previously trained by D Nicholls is Hanovian Baron. This was a very well handicapped horse when Newcombe took over. The horse came from Ireland and Nicholls managed to lower his rating by roughly 2st over sprint distances. When Newcombe took over he simply upped the distance and hoovered up.I think its won quite a lot of decent prizemoney this year.
