monty roberts is american!
Report yeahyeahwhatever April 6, 2010 10:33 PM BST
but over here don't we believe that wider stalls are dangerous because horses can trap heads, legs, jockeys etc
Report tutan April 6, 2010 10:34 PM BST
Everything is bigger in the us , even the golf balls . But when it comes to size of the people they are just gargantuan in every direction.

YOUVE GOT TO GIVE IT TO THE YANKS,THEY KNOW HOW TO GET A HORSE IN A STALL

CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE
Report Graeme83 April 6, 2010 10:35 PM BST
I may be wrong, but don't they use stalls in practice and training ?
Report wizardofoz April 6, 2010 10:36 PM BST
It's simple. They don't tolerate bad behaviour at the stalls in the States. I discussed this with Mary Pitt, who is an american racing journalist now living in England.
Report yeahyeahwhatever April 6, 2010 10:37 PM BST
Do they make the horse stand in the naughty stall?
Report doantwin2easy April 6, 2010 10:38 PM BST
personally I don't know why we don't load simultaneously instead of consecutively. If one won;t cooperate, the extra wait often causes tension.... and that's just in me
Report zoozee April 6, 2010 10:38 PM BST
training at the track will help with getting familiar with the starts and also id guess 20 runner maidens arent tolerated so as bad habits arent learnt
Report jmc27 April 6, 2010 10:39 PM BST
Bigger stalls and a lot of training on leaving the gate been speed racing as UK and Ire trainers found out the hard way at Ascot last year
Report ELG April 6, 2010 10:39 PM BST
ponies probably calm them down
Report onlooker April 6, 2010 10:40 PM BST
BUT ..... Isn't just amazing how may 'Lose their jockey' coming out of the gates in America. ;)

Many, many, more times than here - where that happens very, very, infrequently.

I suppose the Yanks, with their smaller fields, and often well spread out finishers, don't have the same option to be - 'never placed to challenge'. ;)

TILT ENGINE,IVE NEVER SEEN THAT,I THINK IT WAS A RODEO RACE
Report Lotone April 6, 2010 11:00 PM BST
When the yearlings are broken and sent to the trainers from day 1 they walk through the stalls....every day...then when they get a bit older they will make them stand still for a few moments...then work on closing the gate.....finally you need a gate card to race...walk in with other horses around stand still...break out ....then you can race
Report flushgordon April 6, 2010 11:19 PM BST
better trained in usa more time is spent ,
in uk trainers are generally struggling to find staff/time to train them to gallop far less go in stalls,
there are a few trainers who you know that there 2 yr olds will be like old handicappers , and others whose old handicappers come down to the stalls eyes bulging and ready to explode.
sprints and maidens are usually the worst.
Report lukehart April 6, 2010 11:22 PM BST
Our horses are obviously not trained as well.

I have some stats now 12 months
those who only go in with a hood, and also those requiring a Montie Roberts rug. interesting.
Report flushgordon April 6, 2010 11:28 PM BST
the old stalls used before changing to the australian steriline stalls were better also.
if a horse goes off in the new stalls the noise is much louder as they are flimsier and sets off some of the other silly buggers.

Where have all these decent posters gone? dontwin2easy is the only one I recall posting recently. DoWahDiddy was a forum legend.

mac. You're pretty good yourself. Ged is a different level though. I hesitate to recall my memories as Ged knows better than me what I'm on about. Too many Whyte & McKays tonight cheers.Happy

Report sageform November 22, 2024 8:34 PM GMT
Several right answers on here but the key one is the zero tolerance. I never understand why we don't have a stricter rule. Two tries to load max then "take it away". Trainers would soon get the message. I suspect that having so many different courses might also contribute. US horses race on the same track that they train on every day. Would you be more relaxed somewhere you go every day or somewhere you have never been before?
Report themightymac November 22, 2024 8:37 PM GMT

.... in reply to Stu.
Report themightymac November 22, 2024 8:45 PM GMT
yep, stalls a lot wider Rico and outriders seem to calm runners too.

... and stall handlers are bigger and stronger than they are here.

The Chesterfield Stakes at Newmarket in 1965 was the first race ever run in UK with stalls and off the top of my head, Ron Mason trained the winner ..... I think ...... and almost certain Sir Lester rode it.
Report themightymac November 22, 2024 8:46 PM GMT

Don't know TBH, but he did certainly seem to have a downer at some point on here.
