They used to be three flapping tracks in Doncaster, with the one on York road flirting with NGRC racing at one point, it was a massive gallop with a circumpherance of 475 yds,,Stainforth where the dogs used to run in a 10' deep rut round the inside, was almost circuler Askern which although still on the same site is seriously redisigned.the original was very tight , I can remember One eyed Lenny, lyle Robson, Lame Lez, Jack Harrison, The Bentley bros, (who all new the time of day).Along with the bookies Terry Mills.Bints Dibbs & co, Plenty of money about flapping in them days.

I used to walk the 2 dog at Donny all those years ago. We used to have a couple in the Yorkie at 6 then a swift one at the Grove (Mansfield) when that opened at 6.30 then to the track by 6.45 and we used to drink the slops (yuk) and proceed to have a great night. One eyed Len .. now there was a character indeed. Who was the handicapper .. and then there big Barrie and my mate Martin in the kennels. Oh, and old George the handyman and Bintie the hare driver. Christmas meetings were magic. And the bookies .. cannot remember them all but there was Dibb, Dibb, Dibb and Terry Mills who was a real good bloke. Great great days.

Terry's wife was Jenny and they had a fawn ** called Quick Jump. And there was (was it) Wendy Driver and Jack. You could get a good bet on in those days. Martin had a ** called Miss Power and she was put off 10 out of the 6 in the first race one night after coming out of season and doing a sparkling private trial. Remember Martin telling me to borrow as much as I could so I got a bank loan. They backed the 4 dog (Stumpy) ours went out to 5/2 and we got loads on. She won .. trapped and led over the 301 and was never headed by about 6 or 7 lengths and another night where everything became blurred as the night went on. We were giddy as kippers.

Hardly ever missed a meeting at Donny up to it closing, loads of good nights and saw some very good dogs there as well, many top trainers had runners in the opens and graded races. Tommy Flynn was the handicapper, can still remember the dogs running on straw in the winter and no going allowances in those days. Wish i could get the same buzz out of a night at the dogs now.

remember going to donny as a lad of say 14, it had grass straights and I was hooked, the atmosphere was the best happy days, betting on the photo, before modern technology spoilt all that

You are right about Tommy ,Bently Boy, Tommy did not handicap on times at all he used to work through dogs, If Micky gave Jonny 3yds and beat it a head. Then Micky gave Sam 2yds and beat it a head then whan Sam met Jonny it had to give it a yard. All very basic stuff but the betting market was the strongest in Yorkshire at the time so he must have being doing something right.

Used to be 2 in the Potteries - Chesterton and Cobridge - now the nearest is a distance away. The games not dead but is coughing up blood and receiving the last rites. Miracle required.
