i know the**has got its probs . and i sympathise with all concerned with their present plight . however things are worse at yarmouth i can assure you all . the three books at y'mouth are reasonably strong . and 1 of them only took £603 all night tonight . sadly the game notionwide is on its knees .sombody pls remember to switch the lights off when its all over
there in lies lies the root of the problem . because of betfairs undoubted success / dominance . punters stop going racing and bet on here the tracks lose income , its a viscious circle until the tracks are no longer viable a pal of mine who stood at the stow for over 20yrs told me until it became common knowledge it was to close it had been going downhill fast for 3 or 4 yrs and that was our flagship track !

to above replies none of the y'mouth bookies use betfair and would definitely not be allowed to use it as anyone in or in view of the betting ring is not allowed a mobile phone let alone any other device desperate desperate times

Same problem with Romford on a Monday night. First race is 6.30 ish. So people look at the card, would usually turn up for a 7.30 start and can't be bothered as they will have missed first 4 races. Can't blame the stadium for taking the £7k (or whatever) of silver as if it was not a BEGS meeting and started at the usual 7.30 , would probably only add another hundred or so to the gate. Bottom line is that 6.30 simply too early to begin a night out if you have been at work.

not sure what the answer is overboard . but bookmakers can't seriously be expected to go and stand up all night just taking a few coppers . pay the clerk pay their petrol and on top of that be expected to absorb the occasional plot just unworkable and i think this is true of most tracks unfortunately

The books I speak to about this acknowledge that it is all part of the general contract they have. ie in return for taking bundles on Friday and Saturday nights , they have to swallow the Thursday Bags and Monday Begs. All appreciate that the Bags/Begs money keeps the track going.

overboard . sadly we don't take anymore on sat nights/non bags nights , the punters we had simply have either died yes literaly dead or have drifted away and have not been replaced can honestly say the handful of punters left are are all 50+ and we havn't gained a new regular for 5or 6 yrs

Flash, that is the same in any betting establishment be in shops, and same could be said of horses except when there is a themed day..... the only saviour at the races surely is the bit of corporate hospitality / the sponsorhip but you take that away and it wouldent be far behind

I think that part of the problem is that there is less physical cash around. Everyone gets paid into their bank account. HMRC like it this way. If you pull a wadge of cash out nowdays everyone looks at you as if you are a gangster. So you are going to the dogs. You go to the cashpoint. How much? £200?? That's one proper bet, perhaps two. If anyone could design a piece of kit which would allow punters to swipe their card as they have their bet this would save the game. It won't happen because there simply isn't the time as most bets are struck in the last 30 seconds before the traps open. And yet people happily max out their credit cards palying online poker which is probably the biggest mugs game out there. They all believe it is an easy way to riches but from what I have noticed it is the same few people winning for much of the time and hoovering up all the wannabes cash. Which is why there are *****in casinos. The trick is to get people to believe that it's not real money. Unfortunately, on course, this is not an option.

FACT I KNOW PEOPLE WHO MAKE BETFAIR PAY although the majority do their money. as i have said many times when i was going to the dogs there was plenty of youngsters going, there are no youngsters going now there is no new blood cominmg into the game, the youngsters have much more tpo with their spare time, ie, computers, computers games, and so on. in my day playing football in the streeets and hanging about outside betting shops

checkboxes suck , with respect in my opinion tere may be a very small %age that win on the machine and beat the commision longterm however they must be well imformed extremely disciplined and make few mistakes i have made a book for over 20 yrs and my maths are pretty good and would be mighty tough to win laying into an overbroke market longterm and the same as above applies if u are a backer however i admit that is only my opinion

ed didnt take a bet on the first 2 races last night and when in the 3rd a punter came and asked him for a ton on the jolly he had a funny turn. he managed to stick it out for a few more races but after the weasel turned up with burger and *****twice (yes its true weasel put his hand in his pocket - and pulled out 2 penny meal deal vouchers) ed had a relapse and went home!!!!
seriously though ed has a fair point, i have been going to the dogs for the last 20 odd years and never has it been so bad for on course bookmakers - no punters means no turnover, and when punters do latch on to one the books dont want to stand it for too much . therefore punters get jarred off and so a vicious circle starts.

Not all bad news here Ed- it looks from the Weasel's posting that he's on the point of retiring so you could recruit someone on far less lucrative wages !!!!!1

The**got slated last week for there percentages, last night at yarmouth six races over 150% and a bookmaker walking out,are they going to lose there BAGS,also when**was on BAGS i have seen dogs laid to lose £2000 ,seems to me they should be getting it back.

neblin - eleven out of fourteen races at yarmouth last night were on BEGS - which were the races with a 150% plus book ? Also, did the bookie walk out or did he feel unwell and sought permission to leave early ?

Last 3 races were not on BEGS (12,13,14), literally two punters in front of the books for these races, the last race winner was absolutley thrown and shouldve been 1/10 by all rights,1/2 was massive value nearly went had 200/400£ macer with Chris.
Seriously whats the point in sticking these last 3 races on ? its only giving the track and unfairly the bookmakers a bad name, just have the BEGS racing and scrap these races ?, if these races must happen why not stick some imagination into them a graded sprint, or a 659 Hcap ?, give punters some variety, last nights card was 14 462's, no wonder punters (and bookies) have had enuff half way thru.

If they just have a BEGS card, then they can't charge admission fees (well it is frowned upon by BEGS). So they put the extra races on as an excuse to charge.

Went to Great Yarmouth for a 2 day break with the wife and kids, took them to the dogs on the last evening, kids loved it, but the percentage that the 3 books were working to and also not starting betting till the dogs were approaching you have to think they only have themselves to blame, and as for teh track, the cost of a small diet coke was well over the top.

the last 2 or 3 races after the begs has finished have become littered with trial dogs, ex season **es,ex lame and ex resting because the begs boys dont want unexposed dogs on their beloved service, hence where you used to get one or at most two of these "difficult to grade dogs" per race you are now getting 4, 5 or even all 6 in these mickey mouse end of card events. the books are obviously wary of this type of runner and when a race is almost entirely made up of them the percentages are going to look bad. agree with you burger last race winner was value at 1/2, strung out like 3 mile chasers at sedgefield when they crossed the winning line!

i fully appreciate the 167 looks bad but to be honest you would not have laid 3 of the runners at double the price they were returned, someone once told me the only % you can count are the ones you actually lay. at the end of the day the punters wont bet on these races that are put on to finish off the cards as they are minefields for bookies and punters alike.

I have been going greyhound racing for 30 years and it greatly saddens me to see the current state of the game. The sad fact is that there are too few new people attracted to the sport. Gone are the days when on big nights or bank holidays tracks would run out of programmes because they had under-estimated the attendance. Of the new blood that do go, the majority do not bet with the bookmakers. The last meeting I attended was a non-bags evening meeting at Hove. There were three bookmakers and probably six punters, or at least 6 people standing outside looking at the books prices being marked up as the dogs neared the traps. It wouldn't make a jot of difference to their turnover if they bet to 106% or 160%.
Is there a solution? The tracks themselves survive on bags contracts until a property developer comes along and makes an offer they cannot refuse. As for the bookmakers, owners and trainers I cannot see a way ahead. Prize money is pitiful, connections cannot get a decent bet on and bookmakers have no punters to form a real market.
R.I.P. Greyhound racing. I am just grateful to be old enough to have wonderful memories when you were alive and kicking.

an excellent post and valid opinions think a big problem with dogs is it takes studying people under 25 maybe even 30 now in general dont wanna work hard to get a winner. would rather stick a score in roulette machine for instant and easy bet. no inclination to learn about dogs or horses, but would happily do a ton betting roulette or a tenner on ten team football acca that cant win as they hoping for at least 9 of the biggest shocks in history to happen within hours of each other. to save betting you need to change peoples views on life and how money should be earned/won its a GIRO generation now

All bookmakers should be allowed to use Betfair on course. I completely understand why bookmakers wouldn't want to lay over the odds than what it is on Betfair. Why would a bookie want to lay a 4 for 1 to a 'shrewdie' when its 4.5 or 4.6 on Betfair? If it wins "it's a long way back from there son"*
On the other hand, I have absolutely no sympathy for bookmakers who are given the option to use Betfair at tracks, not take advantage of this, and then moan when a punter only bets with them when it's unders on "the machine".
