I hope so rhino PGA maybe?- btw the open is my neck of the woods this year - another area not suited for all the traffic though!

I was thinking Harding Park as well Hank. He's certainly due. After last year's epic lineup this year's venues seem slightly underwhelming, yet none of last year's major tourneys outside of Augusta were all that memorable. Funny how it works, hopefully we get some classics this year.
By:
I hope so too, deserves another for some great play the last couple of years. But then even on a day like this when things are going well he'll still chuck in one or two sloppy ones and that just seems to get punished more in the majors.
By:
If not this year he will be licking his lips at next years rotating venues - Torrey Pines, Kiawah Island and St Andrews. Excellent mojo at all three.
By:
Must admit even though there's been a few events there I don't remember anything about Harding Park, is it a proper major level test? On paper doesn't seem overly long unless they are properly beefing it up.

It's not one to get overly excited about TB, a lot of straight up and down. Hopefully the players create the excitement we're looking for. It's the venue Rory won the WGC matchplay at a few years back. Think Firestone with less trees, a little more space and few elevation changes.
By:
I've definitely traded a couple of events there down the years so the fact I don't remember anything about it speaks volumes. Hopefully it'll provide some sort of interest, these days it seems to be more about the setup and conditions than the course at the majors.
By:
It's next door to Olympic Club, makes you wonder why not just hold it there but they do make an effort these days to get a fair portion of the majors on public courses which is a good thing imo.
By:
Might be a good thing if it's not just mega long with the usual thick rough, a lot of recent PGAs / US Opens have been pretty samey and it feels like it just ends up with the same bomb & gouge merchants dominating.

If conditions allow I'd love to see Winged Foot setup as close to 2006 as possible as an interesting barometer of how much the game has changed in 14 years. Be willing to bet no matter how similar it is the days of +5 winning are long gone.
By:
I would think so as well.

Total Bosman 15 Feb 20 00:33 If conditions allow I'd love to see Winged Foot setup as close to 2006 as possible as an interesting barometer of how much the game has changed in 14 years. Be willing to bet no matter how similar it is the days of +5 winning are long gone. I would be amazed if they set it up anything like it was in 2006. That final sunday was one of the most exciting final days I can remember the set up was brutal lots of different leaders with it constantly changing hands. Remember Kenny Ferrie was well in the mix on the front nine on sunday. It would be great to see that again but those days seem to be long gone. If it was set up the same I suspect the scoring wouldn't be that different partially because the players the modern players would not be used to it. |

not to mention 1974

Enjoyed that MW, thanks. 13 over par made the cut.

The USGA do seem to be a bit more player-friendly these days, they were certainly pretty generous with Pebble last year watering the course in the run-up. Maybe we see a reaction this year though after two of the last 3 went double digits under par. Oakmont went from +5 in 2007 to -4 in 2016 and that's probably what you'd expect to see from Winged Foot if weather conditions are normal.
By:
Would look to see a set up like this for today's stars.
Its an interesting debate does a brutal set up make a bit of a lottery or does it whittle the field away one bypu nishing mistakes. Some players complained in 74 that the best players in the world had been humiliated> The USGA say they set up to simply identify who was the best player. The leaders of the tournament at the end of each day were ... Day 1 - Gary Player Day 2 - Arnold Palmer Day 3 - Tom Watson Day 4 - Hale Irwin Despite the bleating of the players that is not a bad foursome! |
By:
I think they will need very firm fast conditions and rock hard greens to get the score near to par. Davis Love won a pga on -11 round winged foot. It isnt any longer than it was in 2006. If plays soft then they will make mince meat of it.
By:
Should be exciting weekend to come, Rory will be tough to beat but played Rahm at 16.5,hoping for a nice 67 or better this evening.
By:
They had a lot of rain at Oakmont last time didn't they TB? Otherwise I think the irony in all this distance debate is that a shorter course with firm fast conditions is still the best way to test the best players. Lengthening the courses or making the ball go shorter just plays more into the hands of the big hitters.
By:
Yeah, i forgot there were rain delays at Oakmont. For all the talk of the USGA setups it's really all about what the weather gives them (and it seems like more and more it gives them damp, receptive courses), the only times when you can really say it gets unfair is when they let the greens bake out too much. Certainly true that just sticking a couple of hundred more yards on and growing some thick rough isn't really achieving much, just leads to a bomb and gouge contest among the gym rats. Give me Merion any day.

Short putting definitely becoming tricky here. Especially for Tiger.
By:
And RCB
By:
They could have had a +5 winner a couple of years ago at Shinnecock but they lost their nerve and gave the course a good watering before the final round. They just don't seem to want that sort of tournament anymore.
By:
Don't think Tiger activated his glutes this morning.
By:
Rory doesn't have one of his brain fades this should really lead to a comfortable victory here.
So much better than those around him. Different gear in fact.... Playing very solid stuff Hot putter hes already in front. |
By:
Must've missed 8 putts inside 8 feet....Rory.....
By:
Could watch them play the 10th all day
By:
It's great isn't it Hank.

By:
not done too much yet, but I really don't like kuch, so anyone but him for me
By:
What a drive that is. Different gravy is Rory. Nobilo sounding worryingly aroused in the booth
By:
What a round Hideki is having. Should probably see a shot or two.
By:
And a Hideki 3 putt. Still got it
By:
not many things more frustrating than top players looking dodgy on the putting surface
By:
Another 8 footer for Rory....

3 birdies to finish please.
