WELCOME TO THE MOTOR CITY - Detroit, Michigan for the ROCKET MORTGAGE CLASSIC.

Yes it's BACK to Michigan for the first time since the 2009 Buick Open - this week it's to the Donald Ross designed Detroit Golf Club (playing 17 holes from the North course, and one (par 4, 13th) from the South).
Google flyover of the birdie fest - 7,309 yards par 72 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-OO-LH-CHM

A calmer week in downtown Detroit, (we hope ! - only 261 murders reported in 2018, fourth highest rate among major cities in the US) where the temps are warm and winds are calm, so should be a recipe for some low scores this week.

RICKIE (here to please his sponsors - an arm of Quicken Loans), DUSTBIN and HIDEKI - some of the big names to avoid Tongue Out

Also the birthplace of Motown Records btw.....

Anyone been to HELL and back (Hell, Michigan that is) ?

Flat calm this morning so hard to see how this gets much tougher.  My guess is the only way they can defend this course is letting the greens get as firm as possible, maybe even taking it too far.  If so, with a bit more breeze and possibly firming up greens in the afternoon it may be the case late-early has a bit of an edge this week.

Not too fussed about Nate, have taken a bit out and tbh would be bittersweet if he won having missed the 700.

Looks like a slightly better field next week.  Brooks seems to be showing up at more run of the mill events, I guess he's trying a bit harder to shake the "doesn't care about regular events" tag.  More interesting looking course too.

It's hosted champions tour events and scoring has always been low. Far more interested in Ireland next week, you gonna play in Europe over the next few weeks TB or stick to the US until The Open?
Report therhino June 28, 2019 10:52 PM BST
Just checked the field for Ireland and a little underwhelming, no top 10 players. 3 weeks of links golf too much for the worlds best? Thought Phil would be there, reportedly a member at Lahinch and loves the place. Still want to see it on TV, it's on my bucket list of golf courses. Looks amazing in photos.
Report Total Bosman June 28, 2019 10:54 PM BST
I usually stick with the US even when the events are poor, I find with the Euro tour I lose focus with the lack of any shot data and end up doing nothing.  Plus my expertise (if I have any) lies with obscure PGA tour players so sometimes the donkey events can work for me.

I'd forgotten about the Champions Tour event - the course looked like it at least had a few hazards etc for them to worry about, but the winning scores for the codgers are stupidly low for 3-rounders!  Hopefully they can do a bit with the setup though.
Report Total Bosman June 28, 2019 10:59 PM BST
You're right about the Irish field, I guess with the majors coming thick and fast they are limiting their prep to one week mostly.  Shame because Lahinch is a lovely part of the world.  Very surprising to see Phil in the 3M field and not in the Scottish the week after like he's done in the past, but I guess he's not really taking his prep that seriously these days.
Report therhino June 28, 2019 11:06 PM BST
Yeah I think now he's practically conceded he won't win a US Open he's kind of in no man's land until he can go to the Champions Tour and dominate. Just being a top 20 guy of no interest to him, he loves trophies.

You played Lahinch TB?
Report Total Bosman June 28, 2019 11:12 PM BST

Dustbin missed his first cut of the season in 14 starts and his first since The OPEN last July. He entered the week T3 on TOUR in Consecutive Cuts Made with 20 in-a-row. Other notable early exits include: 140- Brian Harman; Jason Dufner; Kevin Tway .. 141- Charley Hoffman .. 142-Gary Woodland Plain ; Kyoung-Hoon Lee .. 143- Chez Reavie; Ryan Moore; Bubba Watson. NATE gives it a Lash – being a “Wildcats” alum, eh.

The University of Arizona in Tucson alum started the week as an alternate (needing a Wednesday WD) to become the last man in. OWGR #353 LASHLEY taking full advantage - torched the course with a bogey-free, 9-under-par 32-31=63 RD.1 - a new personal low round on TOUR with birdies on half of the holes played. A hot putter did the trick as the Nebraska native walked off gaining 4.2 strokes putting.
His first time leading through 18 holes on the PGA TOUR (he did have a 36-hole co-lead at the 2019 Puerto Rico Open). This also clips his 7-under 64 in R4 of the 2018 Byron Nelson as his previous low round on the big stage. Opened with a 67 at the US Open (finished T28), this is his first start since then. Tacked on a 67 in RD. 2. good for a one-shot lead over Cameron Champ.

Turned pro after graduating in 2005, but 15 years ago during his junior year, his parents and girlfriend died in a plane crash in Wyoming, while flying their own single-engine Cessna plane home from Oregon, where they had watched Lashley compete in the NCAA West Regional.
In 2012, failing to see a light at the end of the golfing tunnel, he quit the game. For six months, Nate used his real estate license to work a real job.

His Motto - Live life as if it were your last day.
"I don't know that I could say I live by that," he says. "I think it's a great quote, but I don't know. I'm the person who a lot of people would say doesn't get too caught up with the little things anymore. Little stuff doesn't bother me; I can brush off anything."
At Mitchell High School, Nate would become a three-time all-state selection in basketball, averaging 23.5 points per game in his senior season. Even so, he always knew his journey would focus on golf. Devil

All the guys who make it on the PGA tour can play. Just look at the winning scores on the challenge tour, web tour, euro pro level.

This course isn't really PGA tour standard which probably helps a player like lashley as it just becomes a birdie/ putting contest.

Lashley will have to give them some help. The way he is playing this week hard not to see him shoot 3 or 4 under which should be enough.

If he gets the wobbles and doesn't break par then all the way down to the 13 unders have a chance - the course is a bit of a joke and a 60, 61 is certainly possible.
