Still a huge ask to win another four majors when you consider that great players like Els (4) Seve (5) Faldo (6) Phil (5), Floyd (4), Rory (4), Vijay (3) all managed the number in brackets throughout their careers.

Really has to come down to the physical side - he's 43 and held together with gaffer tape, and you just wonder after the big comeback and Sunday's crowning glory whether the next serious injury that comes along will be the end, I don't know if he'd try to go through it all again.  If he can squeeze in even 5 more years he's got a chance- the US Open and the PGA might be a younger man's game these days but at the Masters and The Open it's as much about experience and strategy as power, and it's not at all hard to see a healthy Tiger win 2 more of each.

I didn't think he'd win at Augusta, I figured The Open would be his best way forward. Pebble he has to be a chance and he does get another crack at Torrey Pines in a couple of years.

We know it was a close finish to the US Masters this year.

How many players finished withing five shots of the win (this includes the winner)?
From 2019 back to when Tiger won in 1997: 16,4,5,9,3,4,7,7,7,5,12,4,9,10,2,3,5,4,3,4,10,7,1
In 2019 16 players were withing 5 of the win.
In 1997 only Tiger was in that range, 1 to 5 shots to the win.
Average number of players 6.1, median 5, in the winner to 5 shots behind the winner bracket.

12 players were within 5 in 2009, when Cabrera won a three player playoff.
10 players were within 5 in 2006, when Mickelson won.
10 players were within 5 in 1999, when Olazabal won.

I decided to hunt back to see if there was another very close finish.
When Woosnam won in 1991 16 players were within 5 of the winner.
When Mize won in 1987 16 players were within 5 of the winner.
When Langar won in 1985 13 players were within 5 of the winner.

I went all the way back to 1934.
2019 and 1987 looks like the tightest finishes.

I think what that shows is the strength in depth is greater than it ever was. I mean you could argue as others have done in that the likes of ernie els, Vijay and phil are better than those around now, but surely you can't argue that the greater strength in depth in golf is greater than it ever was.

either that or they're now a much of a muchness.

actually I have a theory about tiger going forward this year. I think he's got a hunger for success that won't just be sated by his masters win. I think he'll kick on from here.

I also think there's more to come. He didn't actually play that well final round, he didn't exactly light it up. It was just more of a hit fairways and greens job. I can see that he'll want to show in one of the majors remaining what he's truly capable of, that real brilliance.

would be great to see.

One thing that has toughened up the Masters field is giving the world top 50 exemption (probably about 20 years ago).
Another thing is the top 50 after 36 holes make the cut (or within 10 strokes).  Before 2013 it was top 44 (or within 10 strokes).

Tiger may be the best player.
Nicklaus the best champion.
