Tickets are selling like hot cakes , fastest in open history .  Maybe its partly due to recent brilliant weather , odds against that happening next July might be interesting .

Accomodation I suspect is going to be a problem , there are just not enough premium houses available to rent , unless people give up their own homes as rentals .

On buying some tickets tonight just before the midnight deadline I noticed that there is no re-entry if you leave the course .  Is that an Open criterium , it caused angst last time they ran a big event at Portrush ( Irish Open ) ?

Big change from last time the Open was at Portrush , in those days it was fairly common for golf club members to accomodate visiting players ( in their own homes ) . Civilised behaviour too then , but its a different world nowadays .

Kelly, we note on the Orish Forum you referred to this thread as the "BRITISH Open".....*just saying* Devil

Deliberate catchme . Wouldn't want to be up before the beaks on the Irish Forum .

Re re-entry, one of my sons was at the Masters ( The American one) this year , apparently you can go in and out three times a day there if you want .  And a decent sandwich or burger costs very little when you are inside . Don't think you will see a burger below £7 at the 2019 Open .Part of the reason for that is the exorbitant rate they charge for a site on course for a basic chip van .
Report Catch Me ifyoucan August 3, 2018 4:40 PM BST
At The Masters there is a 'secret system' where by you can 'share' your tickets everyday.
A meeting place outside the grounds allows you to go in when you want for half a day then return the ticket to the next person for re entry. Absolutely no phones.

Also a very private 'corporate area' with 4 putting greens (exactly as on the course incl 2nd, 11th & 13th I think) with your choice of putter and of course free drinks/lobster etc.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 August 3, 2018 4:50 PM BST
the open has always been no re-entry is too stop people passing on their tickets when they leave early evening - think there is a twilight price.

You would have thought a simple stamp of the open logo for anyone leaving would sort the problem.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan August 3, 2018 4:53 PM BST
Btw, it is correctly known as 'THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP' and it's on at 'ROYAL PORTRUSH GC' (on Thurs 18th - Sun 21st July 2019).

Presume you have a spare bed/couch for me Kelly Devil
Report Kelly August 4, 2018 1:52 AM BST
Beds / couches will be at a premium catchme . We have accomodation organised nearby for the week ( or most of ), not sure how it will pan out though , lots of people have said they are coming from parts foreign , but yet to see their travel plans . And allegedly it is ticket only , but whether you can buy tickets on the day ( particularly for Sun--Wed ) remains to be seen . Plans have to be fluid until nearer the day .

Re "Royal" , very few locally ever refer to Portrush as "Royal Portrush" , but a lot refer to Newcastle as "RCD". The Royal thing is a throwback anyway , a relic of the past in my book . It impresses the Yanks , particularly those who pay the exorbitant green fees involved . Don't think any round of golf could be worth £200 or more , anywhere in the world .
Report kincsem August 7, 2018 8:31 PM BST
We have Royal Dublin golf club in the "republic".
No hangups about the word Royal, same with the RDS (Royal Dublin Society).

But we can't stand people telling us what we should use.
An example is Charleville, Co Cork.  There were moves to rename it Rath Luirc (Lorc's fort).
In December 1989, a plebiscite of residents under the Local Government Act 1946 voted on four names:
of 2200 electors, 1500 voted (over 90%) for Charleville.

Any chance of a local WEATHER REPORT PLEASE.

Here is a breakdown of how it played last week during the 148th playing of The Open.

• The scoring average for the week on the par-71 layout was 72.175. J.B. Holmes’ final-round 87 was the highest round and winner Shane Lowry’s third-round 63 was the lowest.
• Both sides played virtually the same with the first nine holes averaging 36.159. The second nine holes played 36.015 even though it had the four most difficult holes of the week on that side.
The par-4 11th hole was the most difficult hole of the week, playing to a 4.352 scoring average. The hole gave up 141 bogeys and 21 double bogeys. The next hole, the par-5 12th was the easiest at 4.664. There were eight eagles and 188 birdies there for the week.
• There were actually more eagles (11) on the par-5 seventh hole than there were on the 12th hole. The seventh hole was the third easiest hole of the week.
• In total, there were 32 eagles, 1,339 birdies, 5,180 pars, 1,493 bogeys, 164 double bogeys and 36 others for the week.
• Even though the par-4 opening hole was a brute, more people hit that fairway than any other hole (71.6 percent). The par-4 17th hole was the hardest fairway to hit, as only 38.4 percent of the field hit it.
• It makes sense that the three par 5s had the highest percentage of greens hit in regulation. The par-4 14th hole (the second most difficult hole of the week) only saw 31.7 percent of the field find the green.
