you went for the wrong kim Scared
Report Total Bosman July 15, 2018 10:14 PM BST
That's a sore one.  As is your 500/1 poke looking good for second without ever having a shot at the win, as Rhino and me will testify.
Report dibdob July 15, 2018 10:29 PM BST
Pretty annoying, but I Couldn't make even the flimsiest of cases to back Michael Kim.

What was more annoying though was how many putts under 6 feet Whee Kim missed. What is it with Koreans and short putts?

didn't kim do well in that team event, I seem to recall him playing with andrew putnam and they were leading after two rounds, at the zurich classic that is.

John Deere Classic from TPC Deere Run, 7,268 yards, par 71.....

After 2 weeks of going in on the blind, we now have course form to ponder...
This annual birdie-fest featured a 59 from Paul Goydos in 2010 and was won with 27-under last year.

Total Bosman • July 11, 2018 12:55 PM BST
One of the worst fields you'll see for a main PGA Tour event......
SO who’s playing in this usual Pi55 Poor field ???
Kevin Na, Charles Howell III, Ryan Moore, Lucas Glover, Viktor Hovland, Matthew Wolff, Zach Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Nick Watney.
And don't think playing here isn't the best way to prep for the following week's OPEN Championship - both Zach Johnson (St. Andrews 2015) and Francesco Molinari (Carnoustie 2018) played at TPC Deere Run before going on to lift the Claret Jug a week later.

Last 5 JDC winners.....

2018 (-27, 257) Michael Kim – 1st PGA TOUR win
2017 (-18, 266) Bryson DeChambeau – 1st PGA TOUR win
2016 (-22, 262) Ryan Moore – 5th PGA TOUR win
2015 (-20, 264) Jordan Spieth – 5th PGA TOUR win
2014 (-22, 262) Brian Harman – 1st PGA TOUR win
Report Total Bosman July 8, 2019 12:41 PM BST
First prices up and favourite Morikawa, second favourite Hovland, both a month after turning pro.  Even in a weak field that's remarkable.
Report Hank Hill July 8, 2019 4:18 PM BST
I realize that the market has some gaps in it, but why would Morikawa be shorter than Wolff who just won? Is there an underlying bias against Wolff and his swing? Morikawa has a more aesthetic swing to most, but the facts are it's Wolff 1 Morikawa 0 so far.
Report Total Bosman July 8, 2019 6:06 PM BST
I guess part of the reason Morikawa was shorter than Wolff on Sunday was Wolff had just shot the lights out and there was a "well, he can't do that again" factor, and now he's won maybe the same applies and people make him the least likely of the new big 3.

From what we've seen from their early starts Morikawa has been the more consistent which will be part of it, but it's a very small sample size, plus I guess in terms of consistency his swing doesn't look like he should be consistent (even though the swing seems to be). Funny thing is all the hype for the last year from college was Wolff and Hovland and I only really heard of Morikawa a couple of months ago but he does seem like he has the tour-ready all round game.

As I thought, looks like the head of the market will be those three plus Niemann and Im, and Morikawa is the oldest of the 5 at 22.  Future's here I guess.
Report Hank Hill July 8, 2019 8:54 PM BST
Fair points TB. I also hadn't known about Morikawa until recently, and I have to agree he does have a very solid all round game. Even though it wasn't nice being red on him I was impressed how he stayed mentally in the game after a poor opening, and had it not been for that freak eagle we'd have had a 3 way playoff and then who knows. About Wolff's swing-  Jimbo obviously has a very odd swing but it is very consistent - I guess we'll see the same from Wolff. That little adjustment before he hits it though! not sure I'll get used to that lol
Report Total Bosman July 8, 2019 11:34 PM BST
Lot of moving parts, good that he's started winning early because not sure he can be swinging like that til he's 50.
Report therhino July 9, 2019 11:27 AM BST
Suddenly an interesting tourney this one. I know the better field (at least top end) is in Scotland but with most big guns going straight to Portrush, fair chance the more exciting event this week will be this one.
Report Total Bosman July 9, 2019 2:20 PM BST
Yeah, if they have the sense to stick the three amigos in a featured group they might tempt a few to press the red button. Month ago they had a nothing event, organisers have got a bit lucky to have three new stars land in their laps.
Report therhino July 9, 2019 2:36 PM BST
Tough from a punting perspective though innit, kinda feels like the Barracuda where you're usually getting 30s the field. Pure guesswork, well a little more than usual maybe.
Report Total Bosman July 9, 2019 2:41 PM BST
Yeah, with all the hype on the superstar kids feels set up for a random journeyman to wipe the floor with them, but the trouble is there's plenty of those to choose from.
Report Total Bosman July 9, 2019 5:06 PM BST
Kind of your ultimate course form v current form week, this.  The young guns have had a level playing field the last two weeks but on a track that traditionally rewards repeat customers the fact the top 5 in the betting have one start here between them (Niemann last year) is a bit of a red flag.  But at the same time, your specialists like Moore and ZJ are bang out of form.  By a process of elimination Harman, with a bit of both, might be the most appealing.

JOHN DEERE Classic from TPC Deere Run in Sylvis, Illinois just down the street from the Deere World Headquarters.

The final spot for The OPEN is up for grabs, so a 160m drive east to O'Hare Int. Airport on Sunday night is on the cards, for any player in the T5 that has not already qualified.

This is a tournament that must be won as it has one of the easiest closing stretches of holes on TOUR and concedes a ton of birdies every year. A par 71 (35-36) designed by D.A. Weibring & Chris Gray in 1998/99 & the PGA Tour Design (2006-07) with only three par-fives to play catch-up, yes any par-or-worse on those holes will take two birdies just to catch back up.

Typical of most TPC courses this classic parkland course has a mix of difficult and easy holes with receptive fairways and greens and this week ain’t any different honey with BIG fast bent grass greens running 11' on the Stimp, it became the exclusive home to the JDC in 2000 so we have a solid history of events for the last 15 years from which to find our winner.....

Here are the winners at TPC Deere Run since 2000:
2000: Michael Clark -19
2001: David Gossett -19
2002: JP Hayes -22
2003: Vijay Singh -16
2004: Mark Hensby -16
2005: Sean O'Hair -16
2006: John Senden -19
2007: Jonathan Byrd -18
2008: Kenny Perry -16
2009: Steve Stricker -20
2010: Steve Stricker -26... the tournament record of 254, he made 31 birdies and won by two over “Mr. 59” - Paul Goydos who set the course record in first round to become the fourth, and oldest player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59 - 12 birdies and 6 pars.
2011: Steve Stricker -22
2012: Zach Johnson -20... 24 birdies and just five bogeys yet won his playoff with a double bogey !
2013: Jordan Spieth -19... only after a three-man, 5-hole playoff to become the youngest player at 19 to win on TOUR since Ralph Gudahl in the early ‘30s as he defeated Zach Johnson and David Hearn in that playoff.
2014: Brian Harman -22... built a comfortable enough lead to hold off Zach Johnson by one shot for his first win on TOUR.
2015 Jordan Spieth 264 Tom Gillis 264
2016 Ryan Moore 262 Ben Martin 264
2017 Bryson DeChambeau 266 Patrick Rodgers 267
2018 Michael Kim 257 Bronson Burgoon 265    Joel Dahmen 265    Francesco Molinari 265    Sam Ryder 265

A course that has hosted a 59....After Goydos hit the magic number in 2010.....Check out the BOB (birdie-or-better) stats !!!

As we have seen with most BIRDIE-FESTS, hang on to your hat because just about everyone in this 'weak' field will have a chance! 2013 was the first year in six years that the winning score dropped below 20-under in this PUTTING CONTEST.
So what to do the week before a major – Well WIN of course like Tiger Woods (WGC-BI & PGA in 2007), OPEN Champ Phil Mickelson (Scottish in a playoff & The Open in 2013) & RORY the - the last player to win the week before a Major as he won the WGC-BI before winning last year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla

Only 11 players have won the week before a Major and have gone on to win the following week. Jordan SUPERMAN SPIETH was oh so close this year at the Shell Huston Open where he lost a play-off before his MASTERS green jacket (J.B. Holmes emerged victorious from that playoff with Jordan and Johnson Wagner at TPC San Antonio).

The 2007 Masters Champion and eleven time TOUR winner Zach Johnson has no rounds over par at TPC Deere Run since 2008. His last round in the 70s was back then and the six years following that T69 finish are T2-T21-T3-WIN-T2-2nd with EVERY ROUND in the 60s. This is practically a home game for him although born in Iowa City and raised in Cedar Rapids in the neighbouring state of Iowa. Johnson is one of only two players (the other being Phil Mickelson) to have twice shot a round of 60 on the PGA Tour.  A reminder too that Zach opened up the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield, with a five-under-par round of 66 to hold the lead by one and finished the championship in a tie for 6th, which is his best result to date at The OPEN.

Report Total Bosman July 11, 2019 8:03 PM BST
Not exactly got his grandpa's winning mentality, our Sam.  Scoring seems pretty subdued, not exactly a US Open but no-one's going completely tonto.
Report Hank Hill July 11, 2019 8:21 PM BST
I think I'd have chosen a different profession if I were him - of course he is a great player to be on tour, but to always be mentioned along with his grandad and hardly ever in his own right, that would drive me nuts. I have always liked the John Deere - being able to lump on Stricker back in the day, and unlike that travesty of a course 2 weeks ago there is enough danger to keep you honest as Sam found out.
Report Total Bosman July 11, 2019 8:38 PM BST
Yeah, it bears up OK for such a short course with no serious hazards, for me that one in Detroit and Trinity Forest are vying for worst on tour now, just no real danger to them.  Really does beggar believe that Mike Kim shot -27 round here last year but I guess even the worst of them have one good week in them.
Report Total Bosman July 11, 2019 8:45 PM BST
Poor old Mike's made 2 cuts since last year and the last was the Safeway last October, only weekends he's played since were no cut events and his best result is T32 at Kapalua, which was tied for last place.  Kind of impressive in a way.

Report Total Bosman July 11, 2019 9:53 PM BST

Report Hank Hill July 13, 2019 11:06 PM BST
Am confused on the odds again TB Tringale with no win fancied over Landry on same score with a win - is it cos this place is a good place for first timers?
Report Total Bosman July 13, 2019 11:06 PM BST
The one guy I'll be keeping onside is Straka, guy seems like a bit of a birdie machine when he gets going.
Report Total Bosman July 13, 2019 11:09 PM BST
Probably not a huge difference between the two when things settle.  I guess the main factor is Tringale was much shorter pre off a good run of form, but like last week that doesn't necessarily have a huge bearing on ability to close out from this position.
Report Hank Hill July 13, 2019 11:11 PM BST
Yeah true, but after Lashley I won't be surprised if Tringale finally falls over the line.
