What a great time for EUROPEAN GOLF, albeit in the ‘wrong’ time zone.

From early wins for RAMBO, the Hero Champ, to ROSE at the Farmers in Riviera and then to ARNIE’s Bay Hill where we had that MOLI-WOOD feeling again. FRANCESCO the winner on a magnificent Sunday that featured Matt FITZPATRICK, Fleetwood, RAFA, Matt WALLACE and Rory in the T6.
RORY’s light shone brightest at The Players but Eddie PEPPERELL T3 (with low of the day 66 on Sunday & $725,000 tyvm – the confidence he’s going to take from that display will surely be immense), Fleetwood T5 (& $456,250), Rose T8 and a fading Rahm T12 & SERGIO T22 all had their lights on, and know where they’re going on this TOUR.
Even Ireland’s Seamus POWER T35 got $60,312.50 for his 5-under display, together with Russell KNOX. (Wallace T30, Fitz T41, Moli & Poulter T56 btw).
PAUL CASEY is defending Champion this week which will only help to inspire!!! (Luke Donald is the 2012 Champ)

SO it’s not long out of a BEAR TRAP and into the SNAKE PIT! (sadly no TIGER to contend with, or the  magnificent Rory Mac) at The VALSPAR 2019 from Innisbrook Resort - the last of the four Florida Swings.

The Copperhead Course (par 71 - 7,340 yards) in Palm Harbor, Florida is a 'tinkers course' and odd with four par 5s, five par 3s and nine par 4s that tends to play pretty difficult requiring a combination of length and accuracy off the tee, strong mid-iron play into the par 3s and many of the par 4s and skill on Bermuda putting surfaces.
With up to five holes where water is in play. Most notable are the par-3 13th and the par-4 16th which is the start of the infamous SNAKE PIT (16-17-18) - one of the toughest closing stretches for a PGA TOUR event.
Course history / solid ball-striker / Bermuda putting surfaces - answer yes to all three then you have a contender. Throw in a classy player, and you have the formula for a big week. A ball-strikers paradise with tree-lined fairways and water fronting several approaches, big numbers lurk when the game isn’t tidy. Length matters (think Stenson 3 wood) as it allows for shorter irons into some difficult par 3s and par 4s, as well as the option to take less than driver off a couple of tees. The course overall is tight and tree-lined and often forces golfers to club down off the tee.
The cream usually finds a way to rise to the top with remarkably consistency and that speaks to the quality of the course. Course history certainly matters, as this is the only venue to ever host this event, but for those that may not have a consistent course history, players who are also strong on other Florida stops like Bay Hill and the Honda could also feature.
We always get a few late WD’s so MAYBE WAIT until after the Pro-Am for more withdrawals?

10 of the last 16 winners (& 4 of the last 6) were NOT YANKS !  or 7-of-17 champions were American.

2012 Champ Luke Donald is "On my way to the Valspar Champ - excited to get out competing again, especially at a great venue like Innisbrook". Alas, a 500/1 shot that might make the cut if he's that excited - he obviously likes the course.
OWGR #919 (was #609 end of 2018) Luke Donald made his season debut 9 weeks ago at the Sony Open in Hawaii and duly MC by two on even-par 140 (69-71). He's playing on a 'Major Medical Extension' with 15 starts to earn 335.891 FedEx Cup points in order to retain full-exempt status. His prior start was 13 weeks beforehand at the British Masters (MC as well) while the 41-year-old's last PGA TOUR start was a also a missed cut at the 2018 RBC Heritage last April. The very next day (Saturday), his mom died and nine days later he announced a Leave of Absence due to back pain.
The former World No.1 in the lead-up to the Sony stated a lofty goal of making the 2020 Ryder Cup team on merit. "Well, I’m older, I’m fresh; I haven’t played much in six months," he said, smiling. "I just think me playing my game that I know I can play, I think it’s good enough to make that team. It’s as simple as that." Donald's most recent T10 on TOUR was solo 2nd at the 2017 Heritage.

NOT on their way are - Bronson Burgoon, Martin Laird, along with Aussie Cameron SMITH & Daniel BERGER - all Monday morning blues WD's. Abraham ANCER finished T12 on his PLAYERS debut and that moved him from 63rd to 59th in the OWGR, so a well deserved weeks rest for him too instead of playing four weeks in-a-row. NOREN & FLEETWOOD, also opted out for a weeks rest, as they were both set to make their debuts on a course that has yielded loads of success to International golfers. Apart from the first two mentioned, expect to see all these at next weeks WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas. Devil

While the course is a proper test, it's also a boring test in terms of scoring. Looking at all events since 2014, it yields the second-fewest amount of eagles per 72 holes and also the second-fewest amount of birdies per 72 holes (behind only Colonial for eagles and the U.S. Open for birdies). There certainly won't be as many big numbers as a US Open but bogey avoidance does become pivotal this week and par is definitely your friend at Innisbrook.

Henrik STENSON: "It’s a course where you position yourself off the tee quite a lot, you have to lay back unless you really want to try and thread a few of the tee shots out there. So, quite a few 2-irons and 4-woods, 3-woods off the tee and little bit longer irons into the greens which are pretty small and kind of sits at an angle towards you quite a lot so you want to try to keep it underneath the hole because I can only imagine the kind of quick putts you can get if you end up in the wrong place or chipping from the wrong place."

Adam HADWIN: "I think the big key around this place, which I think I do very well, I don’t make a lot of big numbers and just kind of calm, steady golf is what I like to do and I think that fits very well here for the Copperhead Course."

WEATHER WATCH is mostly 'Sunny into the high 70’s with gentle breezes into the weekend' and maybe a slight chance of storms on Sunday. The pre-cut draw looks very even with no wave advantage from this early forecast.
