A BETTING ANGLE may be backing those that did NOT play at The Honda...

Players that ended at the West Coast Swing (with reasonably good finishes/form) before skipping last week's Honda Classic - and rested/practiced in the West.
1. Avoiding The Honda 'carnage' - travel, wind, etc might turn out to be a good call.
2. Finding sprinkler heads in the middle of nowhere helps.
3. Players will also not have to make adjustments to the greens - they face 'kikuyu & poa annua' again this week - the same combination just two weeks ago at Riviera.
4. Other than altitude, the greens being tricky was a common theme last year. Sergio Garcia: "When you are not used to playing at this altitude it’s tough physically, your head hurts, your body doesn’t feel the same. You just try to get used to it as the days go by and you try to play the best you can."
5. Looking at PGA TOUR events with poa annua greens only - strokes gained putting reads - 1. DJ (posted 22 birdies, an eagle and nine bogeys last year), 2. Spieth (picked up 3.6 strokes putting at the Genesis), 3. Phil SprinklerGate & 4. Tony Finau. (btw Thomas was #1 in putting average here last year).

So some of those Riviera rested and/or form players include - DJ T7, Spieth T14 , PHIL Won, Cantlay (makes debut) T30, Bubba T9, Finau T27, Schauffele (Tour Champion) T18, Hadwin T9 & Burmester (both on debut) T30.

...another PHIL-GATE in 2018, but with a better result.

Breaking News: Tongue Out

Matty Kuchar has withdrawn his name from next week's WGC-Mexico Championship due to "personal, safety and security considerations". The golfer won $1.296 million at the Mayakoba Golf Classic last November where he employed a local caddy, David Ortiz. The news follows Kuchar's statement defending himself after paying the caddy $5K of $1.2 Million Winnings: "We had an agreement". In a new statement today, he issued an apology to family, friends & partners and plans to ring David personally and issue payment of the 'full total' amount requested. Matty is also making a donation to local Cancun charities. Devil

FINE weather will be a big relief - Temps in 80's - only two years of form to go on since the move from Trump National Doral - Third year at the 7,345-yd par-71 Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City which opened in 1928.

Although there are strong correlations with Riviera - tree-lined fairways, kikuyu and poa/bent greens - see DJ & Justin for Riviera/Chapultepec form and of course, last year’s winner in Mexico, Mickelson, a two-time champ at the Riviera - we're having none of it as tired/weary golfer take to this high altitude.

A small field of 72 players so far with OWGR #1 ROSE not travelling.
That CANCUN SHOOTING on Saturday nite - when Gunmen burst into a bar in the Caribbean resort city and opened fire, killing five people and wounding five more - maybe is a concern to some ?

Local favourite Abraham Ancer is ready this time as he returns to Mexico as a local fav this week.....best 100/1 ew ever Devil

When the WGC moved to Mexico - an exemption category was included to ensure the best Mexican player in the world would be included - a purpose that is coming to fruition.
Roberto Diaz was given the first GC–Mexico exemption two years ago with his world ranking nearing 500. Ancer was then in the 700s. It may have been the start of a serious drive that now sees four Mexican players on the PGA TOUR this season in Ancer, Diaz, Jose de Jesus Rodriguez and Carlos Ortiz.
Ancer returns to Mexico City this season ranked 61st in the world, a ranking that while is outside the top 50 who get automatic invites, would have netted him a place regardless of his heritage thanks to a handful of withdrawals. He is the current Australian Open champion, won in Sydney last November, a result he followed up with a T2 for Mexico with Diaz at the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.

Plays with 80-time PGA TOUR winner Tiger Woods in the opening two rounds. PRESSURE ? “Last year was my first WGC in my career and while I had so much support and had a lot of fun, I put a little bit too much pressure on myself to play really well,” Ancer said. “I certainly learned from that and I intend to try to make a better appearance this year. My game has elevated. After Mexico City last year I started playing some really solid golf and it gave me a lot of confidence. I also got a win in Australia which gave me more confidence. It showed me I can win. I feel I am way better prepared this year.”

Over his next three starts he finished no worse than 16th. At the Quicken Loans National in the summer Ancer shot a blistering third-round 62 to share the 54-hole lead with Francesco Molinari. Ancer responded with another top-5 finish at the RBC Canadian Open before once again contending heavily at the Dell Technologies Championship where he led after 54 holes but faded to seventh.

Ancer already has two top 10s and is a solid 42nd in the FedEx Cup standings heading into this week.
One goal firmly in his mind in making the International Presidents Cup team - to be the first ever Mexican player to take part - currently sixth on that points list.
A win on the PGA TOUR is not far away for Ancer. And winning on home soil this week is seriously not out of the question. Devil

Phil got 3 free drops on 3 consecutive holes, first one for a lost ball, after 3 mins searching for ball a spectator then remembers seeing someone pick a ball up.
Next one deep in a bush and gets a free drop coz Phil decides that a wider stance is needed for the shot, but that means the sprinkler is in the way.
And third one again in a bush and finds an immovable object and gets another free drop.
Some pro's play that way, others would consider it as bending the rules too much. In the first instance the caddie will often say something like "strange we can't find the ball, nobody saw anyone pick up a ball? works sometimes, someone in the crowd about to get a chance to help a their favourite pro maybe?
Other two drops pro's go through a mental list of get outs, if not a sprinkler maybe burrowing animal, green keeper cutting left for removal, tyre tracks, and good old line of sight works wonders sometimes.
