It’s often hard to play catch-up on tough courses and that theory fits at PGA National. The key is to get your name on the leaderboard early and hold on. 4-of-the-last-5 winners were already in the top five after Rd1, and 8-of-the-last-11 were in the top eight after Rd1.
This is the 12th Classic at this venue and a definite pattern has emerged – it matters to be in-contention at the halfway stage - Thomas was tied 7th at this stage on his way to victory last year and that’s as far back as any of the 12 winners has been (by position). Only one of the 12 winners wasn’t within three swings of top spot at this stage (Ernie Els, five shots, 2008).
While being in-contention is imperative, yet the record of the halfway leaders is not so great. Harrington is alone in winning in the last five years, and in the last 12 years only Villegas (2010) and YE Yang (2009) joined him. In all 17 players have held or shared the 36-hole lead, and only 5 of them broke par on Moving Day ! Devil

Perhaps a little 'reverse psychology' is in order...
A FUTURE MAJOR-Winner-WINS ?????

Since Corey Pavin back won in 1992 (at Weston Hills Golf and CC - ben dare, dun dat - great course btw), a total of fourteen other MAJOR winners have followed suit here, with Couples (1993), Price (1994), O'Meara (1995) and Calcavecchia (1998) & VJ Singh (1999) then Justin Leonard (2003), Tod Hamilton (2004), our own Padraig (twice - 2005 & 2015), Ernie in 2008, Yang (2009), RORY ('12), Scott (2016), Justin Thomas last year - That's 15 (multiple) Major Winners (in 28 events) - one every other year (fwiw, it may only be a coincidence that lots of them won the OPEN).

BETFAIR, please add 27yo Keith MITCHELL to your 51 selections for the OPEN Championship betting - The Georgia Bulldog is a member of the Sea Island Mafia so perhaps 'The Masters test' may suit as well Devil

Fortunate then that Thomas, Koepka and Fowler all live within 10 minutes of the course. This new schedule is also a concern going forward. Clearly, the schedule isn’t going to change next year but 2021 is a very big year for the event because the Honda contract is up after that tournament. Honda is the tour’s longest-standing title sponsor, now in its 38th year.

Hope the other neighbours were watching Wink …... IT'S TOO GOOD A TOURNAMENT TO BE LOST TO SCHEDULING ! Devil

Mm, joking aside when the stories were coming out about the prostitution ring in Jupiter and that Kraft was far from the biggest name caught, the mind went to one name, and now he's out with a mystery injury.  Mind you, half the world's top golfers live nearby, not to mention the president hangs out just down the road, so could be anyone.

I do hope not though, if the reports are true that the girls working there were "involuntary" then it's a far bigger deal than just a cheeky rub and tug and anyone caught using them is in a fair bit of trouble.  We've only just got Tiger back.
Report therhino March 5, 2019 11:23 PM GMT
Kraft not necessarily well known internationally but is a giant in America. If the report about a bigger name being implicated is true, none of the golfers qualify, with the exception of Tiger. Only others who live local who would qualify would be Trump and Michael Jordan. Jordan has some form in this area and Trump, well. Still, Tiger the fave. I'd be a backer at 1.9 Devil

...of the proposed Premier Golf League as he wants autonomy over own schedule. He also believes Tiger only wants to play 12 events a year rather than 18 mooted.
McIlroy said after being asked if his thoughts have changed on the Premier Golf League.
“The more I’ve thought about it, the more I don’t like it. The one thing as a professional golfer in my position that I value is the fact that I have autonomy and freedom over everything I do."

AND a pi55 poor showing at The HONDA CLASSIC in Palm Beach Gardens next week.

Report Catch Me ifyoucan February 25, 2020 2:41 AM GMT
Back in 1983, the PGA Tour changed Monday qualifying to limit the number of spots in the field to four from the Monday event. Prior to then, a higher percentage of the field came from that qualifying event as the "all-exempt" Tour hadn't yet become what it is now.
Prior to the rule change in 1983, the last Monday qualifier to win on the PGA Tour was Jeff Mitchell when he took the 1980 Phoenix Open.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan February 25, 2020 2:43 AM GMT

Westwood and countryman Luke Donald are the only two golfers to reach the number one world ranking despite never winning a Major.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan February 29, 2020 4:18 PM GMT
In May 2011, Donald beat Lee Westwood in a playoff to win the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Club.
This was Donald's fifth victory on the European Tour and in the process became World number one. Westwood had entered the tournament as number one in the world and the sudden-death playoff at the end of 72 holes provided a subplot of world numbers one and two contesting for the championship.

On the first playoff hole, the par-five 18th, after both laying up with their second shots, Donald played a pitch for his third shot to leave himself a putt of no more than six feet for birdie. Westwood's approach shot to the green spun back into the water hazard. Westwood chipped out from the drop zone and made double bogey, leaving Donald to hole out for a birdie to win the title and become the new world number one. Donald was the third Englishman to hold the number one position in the Official World Golf Ranking since its inception in 1986.

TOUGH MotherF*cker of a golf course!
Since 1996, this week’s Honda Classic marked the first Non-Major on the TOUR without any player posting a score of 5-under or better in any round.....
.....maybe that’s what happens when you make it a Par70..... no one wants to see a birdie-fest every week.
SUNJAE IM’s winning score of 6-under is the highest in a Non-Major on the PGA since Brandt Snedeker won the 2016 Farmers Ins Open with the same score.

GOOD NEWS for Honda fans (hopefully) and for the (((((FLORIDA SWING))))) in 2021.

Instead of leading off the Florida swing, the Honda Classic will be played March 18-21.....after St Patrick's Day!

With the date change, the Arnold Palmer Invitational will lead off next year, followed by The Players and then The Honda Classic.

The revamped schedule moved the Honda Classic into the middle of a hard run of five big events, a run that also included a more fortified finish to the West Coast swing. The Honda Classic was feeling the squeeze the last two seasons, with the Genesis Invitational and WGC-Mexico Championship preceding it and the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players following it. The WGC event was previously played at Doral in suburban Miami, which added convenience to players also wanting to compete at nearby Honda. “We will have to see how it goes,” Honda Classic executive director Ken Kennerly said. “You never know what these guys are going to decide to play and what they’re going to miss, but we feel it will be better for us.”

The Masters was a factor in Honda’s move to the middle of March next year. With one less week on the calendar before the year’s first major, the Tour’s making adjustments. How that will affect the Valspar Championship’s dates has yet to be announced.
