Fascinating market this week. Second week in a row there have been 5 at the top and a massive drop, even more pronounced here where really it's one, then the next four then the rest.

When in the last 5 years would you get anywhere near 12.5 and likely higher on Rory coming in off finishes of 3rd and 2nd where he was a combined 40 under par? New rules this year.

CONGRATS TO TED POTTER

The 34-year-old Floridian Ted Potter, Jr. fired a career & week-low 9-under-par 32-30=62 on Monterey Peninsula CC (finished bogey-bogey as he was well on his way to a 59 - was 11-under thru 16 holes on the par-71 layout) but according gained his first 54-hole lead/co-lead - in his 84th career TOUR start.
The two-time Web.com Tour grad is a one-time winner on TOUR in 83 career events, claiming the 2012 Greenbrier Classic during his rookie season. At the Greenbrier, he was solo 6th thru 54 holes (four back), shot 6-under 64 and won a two-man playoff over Troy Kelly. Ted's OWRG #246 will change tomorrow ! Devil

European players might be due for a major win, too. Eight of the last nine majors have been won by American players, with Francesco Molinari the lone representative in that span.
G-Mac broke through in 2010 at Pebble Beach, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see Fleetwood or Rahm do the same this week.

Meanwhile, CHESSON HADLEY is on a run of 3-under-thru-6 on the back nine.

In four of the last five years, a halfway leader has gone on to lift the trophy. It's quite a trend as Rory McIlroy (2011), Graeme McDowell (2010) and Angel Cabrera (2007) also managed it. Overall, since 2009, 17 players have had a piece of the 36-hole lead and 14 have gone on to finish in the top four.

In that period the biggest leaderboard leap was Webb Simpson, from T8 in 2012 and in terms of shot only one man came from further than four back (Lee Janzen’s five-shot claw back in 1998).

Where have the eventual champions been at this stage of the tournament? (after Rd 3).
1972 – Jack Nicklaus led by one
1982 – Tom Watson was tied first (of two)
1992 – Tom Kite was tied second (one back)
2000 – Tiger Woods led by ten
2010 – Graeme McDowell was solo second (three back)
If all this points to Woodland and Rose, the chasers have some hope because in the 1977 PGA Championship Lanny Wadkins was tied fourth and six back.

US Open 2019: How do Sunday's pin placements compare to the AT&T Pro-Am? Alex Myers / Jeremy Schilling @jschil has this story:

Are we seeing a kinder, gentler USGA now that John Bodenhamer has taken over from Mike Davis in overseeing US Open course setups?
Phil Mickelson was downright gushing after Saturday's third round—and he isn't even having a good week!
"I've got to give it to, hand it to the USGA for doing a great setup. It's the best I've ever seen. And it's identifying the best players. It's making the players the story," Mickelson said moments after making a triple bogey on No. 18. "I think the biggest thing was pin placements, instead of putting them right on the edges they were in good spots, rewarding great shots. I can't say enough great things about how this week has gone so far. And I'm appreciative to the effort they've put in and for the opportunity that I had this week."
But maybe Mickelson spoke too soon. After all, the USGA had one more opportunity to create a bit of carnage on the Monterey Peninsula with Sunday's pins. In the two previous Pebble Beach U.S. Opens, only one player—Tiger Woods in 2000's historic triumph—had finished the week under par. The USGA certainly would fight back at a tournament where two players are double digits under par through 54 holes, right?

Checking out the final-round hole locations from February's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (won by Mickelson, by the way) to the pins players will face on Father's Day:
You can see, there are plenty of similarities. But in a few of those cases—Nos. 2, 11, and 14, for example—Sunday's pins are slightly more accessible than they were a few months ago. In fact, you could argue that eight of the first nine holes (No. 7 as the lone exception and that's the shortest hole on the course anyway) have easier pins than the guys faced in February. One thing to note, though, is that the greens this week are a lot firmer than they were in February, which limits some of the spots to place pins and keep the goodwill flowing from players. On Saturday, golfers really started to have to factor in bounces when hitting approach shots.

Still, with a little morning mist to keep the greens from getting too firm, a similar wind to the first three days, and a lack of pins being placed on the edges, golf fans should probably expect more of the same on Sunday. Of course, there still exists the ultimate defense of par: the final-round nerves that come with trying to win a Major Championship.

There weren't many surprising early exits this week as Justin Thomas and Tony Finau were the only golfers less than 100/1 to miss the cut this week.

It wasn't one of the favorites that came out on top, though. Favorites like Koepka, Rose, Schauffele, Rahm, and McIlroy all put their names near the top of the board but it was Woodland who found himself at the top for most of the weekend also at the very end. He opened the event with odds in the 75/1 to 80/1 range.
By week's end it looked like a Waste Management Phoenix Open leaderboard with Woodland and Koepka both being past champs at TPC Scottsdale, Chez Reavie finishing runner-up in 2018, and Jon Rahm impressed there as an amateur. This is Woodland's fourth PGA TOUR win and first in a major championship.
