Hi all, have been at the course today & will b there all through the week. Pretty good conditions for practice today. Rough isn't that long, wispy would best describe it, unless you are really wild & get in the thicker stuff or gorse. It's been a dry spring in the area so that is why rough isn't up too much. Accuracy still important though as a lot of bunkers in play off tee. Greens were softish today as there was rain yesterday. No rain forecast now until Weds when there is potential for showers, even a thunderstorm. If that materializes then it will be soft for rnd 1. The big factor potentially of course will be the wind which if forecast is to be believed in true 'golfing gods' style is due to pick up on Thursday for 4 days! Needless to say winning score, the draw, etc could be dramatically effected by this.
I'll look to update on twitter through the week. @sundogmonkey Cheers & enjoy the week everyone! |

Most enjoyable visit to BIRKDALE today. The beauty of the place remains in it being virtually unchanged since I first played it in 1989. 7th hole (par 3) though for several years is played now from a 90 degree different angle.
The weather was warm with a zephyr of a wind from the north west. I was amazed with the the generosity of the fairways and lack of DEEP rough. You have to be seriously well wide to be searching for a ball not withstanding help from the gallery. The normal Open Championship key of avoiding fairway bunkers should be paramount to all players. To all intents & purposes the R&A might as well put red stakes around these wonderfully positioned traps! The greens looked in very good nick which was pleasing. It's early days but the greens here have been severely criticized by competitors for decades. I managed to observe Rory for a few holes who by his his own admission (speaking to JP) seemed to be struggling with his ball flight off the tee. Oh, and Willett did not look great either. Regarding the course again I did not recognize the (new??) 16th tee which stretches the hole to 438 yards! This hole used to be a "cough & a spit"! when I was a lad. Overall, if the wind does not get up the course is defenseless, but remains an honest examination. Good luck all! |

So are we suggesting the bombers will have an advantage due to lack of rough? Can they drive over the strategic traps and no penalty if no rough.Get as near to green as possible like in Irish.
Interesting. |
