I'm enjoying this Olympic golf. I think they've got the right format. All set for a duel in the sun tomorrow on a fantastic course. And now I've got used to it I'm even liking the commentary (the 2 of them certainly put a shift in whoever they are)!

As for future Olympics. The European Tour are looking at a shorter 6-hole team match play format with shot clock and maximum 5 or 7 clubs. So, a golf version of Twenty20 cricket and 7's rugby, not to replace the full game but to offer something a bit different (and quicker, more accessible etc). So I think you could see something like that in 2020 as well as the 72-hole individual stroke play. Could do a 16 team 6-hole knockout easily in a day, so 3 events like that with national teams of 2, one for men, one for women and one mixed. In fact, wouldn't surprise me at all if they're already thinking something along those lines.

Might not be the biggest event for golf but Rose gets to be introduced as Olympic Champion for 4 years.  I reckon the guys who couldn't be bothered to show up will be pretty jealous.  Much better field next time out.

Had a chance there to make a solid profit with 2 holes to go and again later, but greed licked in. A very poor characteristic for a supposed punter. Mad ea complete hash of my golf weekend. Continued to tell myself Rose would bottle an important putt but the pressure putt never materialised to test him. 2 uncharacteristic short chips from Stenson and a great up and down from a bunker by Rose. When you get a hole in one in golf, it must count.

I don't even think I would swap a Gold medal for a Major, between Olympics you have 16 chances to win a Major, this is worth almost just as much given how often you get the chance. Mcilroy made a big mistake in not competing, although he just probably exposed himself as Irishman rather than a Brit. Did not want to represent Britain so just came out with his **** and bull excuse and hope nobody draws to much attention to it.

Think Harrington was spot on in his comments when Mcllroy pulled out the sheep like Lowry, Day etc followed to be seen supporting a spoilt brat. So really delighted to see JR ignoring him and turning up to become a gold olypian which Mcllroy wouldn't even begin to know the meaning of. Think Lowry and the rest really showed themselves up as Mcllroys puppets.
Report sewter lives again August 15, 2016 10:14 AM BST
McIlroy may not care and will probably say he has no regrets but I wonder if he realises how people's opinion of him has fallen following his petulant displays in recent events and not bothering with the Olympics

And I don't just mean golfing folk
Report trebor August 15, 2016 11:38 AM BST
The only thing I would have done differently if I was in Rory's position is give the correct reason for not wanting to play, and that is that the top golfers have been given an impossible summer of tournaments to try and fit in because of the rescheduling due to the Olympics.

Sure he would have got just as much stick for that reason as well, but the Olympics might be the pinnacle of sport for some disciplines, but to many golfers it is a non event.

And what's this conspiracy theory that others pulled out to be seen supporting Rory and the ones that played where ignoring him? Laugh
Report tim6 August 15, 2016 3:23 PM BST
Great to see genuine sportsmen like Rose and Andy Murray fight to hard for their olympic medals. Thought the golf was brillant no delays and nice to see the best golfer in the world Stenson take his place too, well done guys thanks for keeping the flame alive.
Report ian merseyside August 15, 2016 3:29 PM BST

We felt the bite of the ZIKA mosquito last time, now a novel CORONA virus could prove infectious (Day 42, Captain's Log: Stardate 2020.56).

'Pandemic' potential - "we're not there yet" - says WHO, who have already issued the highest warning it can - On January 30, the World Health Organization declared the virus a 'Global Public Health Emergency'.

Dick Pound, the longest-serving member of the IOC (since 1978), estimates there is a 3-MONTH WINDOW to decide the fate of the Tokyo Olympics, which are being threatened by the fast-spreading coronavirus from China. Pound did not sound alarmist. But he did speak frankly about the risks facing the Olympics, which open July 24. About 11,000 athletes are expected for the Olympics, and another 4,400 for the Paralympics, which open on August 25. Most infections are in China, where more than 77,000 people have the disease and over 2,600 have died. South Korea now has the second-most cases in the world and clusters of the illness are now appearing in the Middle East (Iran's deputy health minister tests positive) and Europe (Italy/Austria/Tenerife). This could signal a new stage in the spread of the virus with four deaths reported in Japan.

"You could certainly go to two months out if you had to," said Pound, in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press. That would mean putting off a decision until late May and hoping the virus is under control. "A lot of things have to start happening. You've got to start ramping up your security, your food, the Olympic Village, the hotels, The media folks will be in there building their studios." The Olympics have only been cancelled during wartime, and faced boycotts in 1976 in Montreal, in 1980 in Moscow and 1984 in Los Angeles. The Olympics in 1940 were to be in Tokyo, but were called off because of Japan's war with China and World War II. Postponement or moving it to another city is not an option. About 73% of the IOC's $5.7 billion income is from broadcast rights. Uncertainty is a major problem - the IOC's stance - that it's depending on consultations with the World Health Organization to make any move. So far, the games are on! "If it gets to be something like the Spanish Flu," Pound said, referring to a deadly pandemic early in the 20th century that killed millions. "At that level of lethality, then everybody's got to take their medicine." Telegraph Devil
