Kind of thinking those that skipped Torrey or missed the cut may have an edge here, but still looking at Sneds again all the same. Don't think he really peaked for the win, 3 so-so rounds followed by a pearler in the wind that had it's fair share of luck, dropping bombs with the flat stick. Hasn't hit his ceiling form wise if he brings the intensity.

in a funny sort of way this will give fowler a big psychological boost. he's been struggling to get over the line lately, and he still won, even if he was absolute gash. think winning this will be a massive relief to him and he will feel like he's freerolling for the rest of the season.

breaks his majors duck this year for me.
Report Hank Hill February 3, 2019 11:24 PM GMT
lewisham you're very loyal! backing him every major then? I said yday he would shoot even and get beat - amazing he shoots +3 and wins - golf is very strange sometimes.
Report lewisham ranger February 3, 2019 11:36 PM GMT
not sure. have someone else in mind for the masters.

pebble beach, british open should set up well for him though.

thing is with fowler it's only a matter of time. have never agreed with those who say he will never win a major, that's complete bollox, I've always thought he's as good as someone like Thomas, just not as good at getting over the line.

thing is anyway the majors very tough this season, every year it gets tougher, what with woods back to form, mcilroy/Spieth something to prove, Koepka got the bit between his teeth, rose playing the golf of his life, rahmbo, Dj, young Cameron champ, Thomas, Fleetwood, moli, J-day, Bryson Dechambeau, kuchar, god having written all that out I think I'll end up backing about a dozen players for each one Crazy

fowler though good as chance as anyone.

JAN 30 - FEB 2 Waste Management Phoenix Open TPC Scottsdale, Scottsdale, AZ  • Purse: $7,300,000 Rickie Fowler $1,278,000

WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN 2020...

PROBABLY 'The Greatest Show on Grass'... It's all happening this week at TPC Scottsdale - the Tom Weiskopf 1986 desert design with 2014 renovations...A par 71 of 7,300 yards with a touch of altitude (and attitude !!!)
The event draws the largest crowds of the year, as the rowdy US crowds are unleashed as golfers draw closer and closer to the relaxed atmosphere of the infamous, par-3 16th - 'The Coliseum'. Attendance figures for the tournament is usually around a half million. The winning score, typically in the mid-teens, with 8 of the last 9 winners landing between 15-and 18-under.

BIG Weekend too - Sunday is "Groundhog Day".....then the SOUPERBOWL with the Chiefs vs 49ers.

Previous Winners.....
2019 WHO WON ?
2018 Gary Woodland 266 −18 Playoff Chez Reavie
2017 Hideki Matsuyama 267 −17 Playoff Webb Simpson
2016 Hideki Matsuyama 270 −14 Playoff Rickie Fowler
2015 Brooks Koepka 269 −15 1 stroke Hideki Matsuyama Ryan Palmer Bubba Watson
2014 Kevin Stadler 268 −16 1 stroke Graham DeLaet Bubba Watson
2013 Phil Mickelson (for 3rd time) 256 −28 4 strokes Brandt Snedeker (before the renovations).

Monday qualifiers for TPC Scottsdale...three spots up for grabs (instead of the usual 4)
66 (-6) Zack Sucher (bogey-free; 6 birdies)
67 (-5; via 3-for-2 playoff) Patrick Flavin (1 eagle, 7 birdies, 4 bogeys) Alex Smalley (7 birdies, 2 bogeys). (Robert Garrigus missed out).
Garrigus was in the headlines for the wrong reasons last season (cannabis-related suspension). The 42-year-old is a former Tour winner — with three additional losses in playoffs — and has spent time in the Top 50 of the World Ranking.

SO, after a few full-field events, the field is trimmed to just 132 golfers this week - Cut is T65 and ties - PGA TOUR 'Tournament of the Year' winner 4 times since 2014.
Korn Ferry Tour grads in this week through the KFT Category are Mark Hubbard, Scheffler (KFT leader), Harrington & Cappelen (sponsor exemption), Murray (medical) & Hossler (Farmers T10).
As everyone knows, Lefty is surprisingly skipping the event this year to go play in Saudi Arabia. He's fired two course record rounds of 60 (11-under) here  in 2005 & 2013 (winning both times)
THERE@s a strong morning versus afternoon bias here...typically cool mornings warm up very quickly in the late morning and early afternoon...so you'll see the ball fly further in the afternoon and it's one of the rare events where an afternoon tee times can actually be better than the morning. Something to note for first-round leader bets.

Looking forward to this one, 16 gets all the attention for the circus but it's one of the best back nines on tour for drama with water everywhere and big risk / reward holes at 15 and 17 for those who are chasing.
Pleasing to see a high quality field despite the dollars on offer to big names heading to the Saudi Sportswash - JT and Rahm in particular are two of the biggest names in the game and must have plenty of cash waved at them but neither appear to just turn up anywhere for the appearance fee which tells you their heads and hearts are in the right place.

Colt Knost is retiring from professional golf at age 34 to pursue new roles in broadcasting. He’ll surely be joined in the booth by good friend Jordan Spieth before too long. Tongue Out
Knost is a Scottsdale resident and saved the final start of his major medical extension for this ‘hometown’ event. "It just sucks to end this way" he said after missing the WMPO cut by a shot.
A former US Amateur and US Amateur Public Links Champ, in addition to helping the US to a victory in the 2007 Walker Cup, Knost enjoyed the best season of his career in 2016, highlighted by a T-3 finish at The Players when he tied the course record with a second-round 63. But he sustained a wrist injury shortly thereafter and never regained his form. Knost won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2008 and earned more than $4.3 million in 199 starts on the PGA Tour. “I just don’t want to go play that other tour (KF Tour) anymore, it’s been fun, but I’m kind of over it even though I still love playing.”
He’ll now be trading in his clubs for a microphone, having accepted a broadcasting opportunity with CBS Sports in addition to his ongoing radio show on SiriusXM.

Toneee also kicking himself for refusing the Saudi golden handshake. - only 2 bogeys all week for Finau - No player has ever had just 1 bogey (or none) at TPC Scottsdale in this tournament's history when playing all four rounds.

2020 – Webb Simpson: Round 1: T66, Round 2: T8, Round 3: 2nd..... 1 behind Finau, 69 Sunday (birdie, birdie finish), then won in playoff from Toneeeee (with another birdie - 3,3,3.) Some refer to it as, a sudden-death playoff. Revenge for 2017 perhaps, where he also finished birdie-birdie to get into a playoff with Hideki.

Webb secures his 6th PGA TOUR win (first since the 2018 PLAYERS) and leave good friend Finau wondering just what he has to do. It's perhaps not unfair to say that you could tell who was the Major Champ and proven winner in the moment of truth. Simpson (71,63,64,69) had shot only even par on day one so this was some effort to post 17-under. Into the T-10 in the world for the first time since 2012. Webb was 120's+ on here after Rd1. Devil
4-for-4 on the season with four top 10s, three of those top 3s, including a 3rd at the Sony in his last start, and a playoff loss at the RSM. Webb's sixth top-3 finish in his last 12 starts. Most top-3s on TOUR since June 1:- Webb Simpson 6 - Justin Thomas 5 - Rory McIlroy 5.

Finau was the hard-luck runner-up, a spot he’s grown accustomed to in recent seasons, having now has finished in 2nd second place 7-times worldwide over the last four years but unfortunately has not won in that span.
Finau has 28 T10 finishes on Tour in the last four seasons, by far the most of any player without a victory during that span.
There are four other players with 28 or more T10 finishes on the PGA Tour during that stretch:- Thomas, Rahm, Rory and DJ. with a combined 27 victories over those four seasons.
