DOHA GC is a Links-type par 72 of 7,400 yds designed by Peter Harradine. The greens are grainy which has tended to suit South African players as they are more used to these surfaces – think Branden Grace with two wins – more especially on this track when it gets bouncy, firm and quick. The wind is a big consideration due to the exposed nature of the course. The front nine of 3,815yds is considerably longer (by 230yds) than the back at 3,585yds. When Grace won last year he was a combined 13-under on the back nine, while only 1-under par on the front.
It all bodes well for Graeme McDowell when you see him thrash the back nine today and carded 6-under-par 36-30=66 for T3. This is the first sighting of GMAC in over two months as he teed it up from the 10th and promptly scorched his way to the turn for the low back nine of the day. (Aphibarnrat had the low front nine with 32). Graeme did get it to 7-under, gaining a shot at the 2nd but giving it back at the 6th. No doubt he’s happy to have opened his 2017 season so well - as it's only the second time in 7 first rounds that he broke 73 - and the first time he has gone sub-70 on Day 1 here. Linksy terrain of course also suits the Rathmore man. Devil

THE 2019 Commercial Bank QATAR MASTERS

LOOKING TO FIND A WINNER, then bet on a good wind player from the T20 ‘Bombers List’ who likes to putt on grainy Bermuda greens.
THE NEW SCHEDULE plays it's part in this p iss-poor field - used to have one of the European Tour's strongest fields when slotted in between events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi - AND the time-zone to watch it at 4am in the morning doesn't help either !!!
Previous BIG NAME winners incl. Adam Scott (twice), Sergio & Stenson, while our interest this week is “An-African-Angle” - South African golfers have played well here in Doha GC down through the years.

2018 Coetzee T8th
2017 Jaco van Zyl was T2nd after playoff.
2016 Branden Grace won with Coetzee T7th.
2015 Branden Grace won. (btw OWGR #41 behind #25 Oosthuizen)
2014 Aiken & Coetzee T5th.
2013 T2nd George Coetzee only one swing behind, with Branden Grace T6th.
2009 T2nd Louis Oosthuizen (3 strokes back).
2007 Retief Goosen won. (OWGR #26 at that time)
2005 Ernie Els won. (OWGR #359 btw, but #5 at that time)
2003 Darren Fichardt won in playoff from James Kingston.
2001 Tony Johnstone won (Zimbabwe).

TOP SA BETTING.....
JUSTIN HARDING 11/2 OWGR #74 - even if he is making his debut here - or a better-bet-be 50/1 to win this thing, eh, The MOTHER OF PEARL Trophy.
George Coetzee @15/2 OWGR #243
Dean Burmester @15/2 RTD 42nd OWGR #143
Erik Van Rooyen @15/2 RTD 38th OWGR #157
Brandon Stone @8's Rolex Winner OWGR #122

Spent a day in Doha once , overnight flight delay .  In a 5 star hotel courtesy of air line .

Had to take a taxi to go 200 yards to a shopping mall to get a fresh shirt ( luggage still in airport , duty free impounded , took over an hour to liberate our duty free when we eventually got to leave ) . Sand storms .

Nothing to do , one of most boring days I ever spent in the course of a lot of travel through the years . No alcohol , talked to a few Irish lads who worked in the hotel , they said none of us ever stay working here for more than 9 months . Nothing to do .

And they are taking a world cup there .  Bonkers .

Picked 6 players in the Fantasy Race to Dubai for this tournament .  Pieters , Wood , Dubuisson , Hansen --JB , Hanson Peter , Lewis , a decent set I reckoned .  They are all going to miss the cut , never happened me before .  Guess none of them are bursting to stay there for another 2 rounds .

QATAR bookends the European Tour's ((((GULF SWING)))))......

Initially, there was concern about the event in Abu Dhabi....."No American is safe" - as DeChambeau weighs in on Iran conflict.....and considered skipping the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship due to tensions between the US and Iran.....“If I feel like it will be safe to go there, I will be there. I’m gathering information.” - Sergio.
Subsequent tournaments in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Oman and now Qatar got the go-ahead as scheduled but the European Tour was monitoring events in the region closely.
This week Eddie Pepperell - "Off to Qatar today. Straight up, I WD from Oman last week over Corona Virus fears (getting stuck somewhere abroad), but yet a week on, with even greater risk, I’m off! (Struggling to justify that kind of decision making) Anyway, will be nice to be back in Doha." .....guess the cheap red wine, and The Masters OWGR (in 5 weeks) was too tempting!

The Harradine-designed DOHA GC hosted since the event’s inauguration in 1998 but gives way to a brand new home this week at EDUCATION CITY Golf Club.
As one expects from the region, the Jose Maria Olazabal designed course is a top-class desert track with undulating fairways, fast greens, plenty of water hazards and numerous bunkers – this landmark project is just one year old – with only three par5’s - the 2nd, 6th & 13th - and Augusta like Par 3's - https://www.instagram.com/p/B8tUxVUg1MR/?igshid=18cejqjfkt6tf - it closes with epic views of one of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2022 stadiums as an impressive backdrop on 17th, and a long 513-yd par4...... a 'luxury' driving range too by all accounts.
