should be up to players and managers whether they choose to sing or not..

if he gets a tune out of this lot, people will lose interest in the issue pretty quickly..

Sacking is a bit strong, but it shouldn't be too difficult to sing the anthem. If all they do is stand there is it worth bothering with the anthems at all? If nothing else Southgate did get them to sing the anthem after the idea had seemingly gone out of fashion. Looks like we could be heading back in the other direction again.

You should be more worried about having someone managing a team who can’t sing a song because his “mind might wander off”.

He sounds like the kind of guy who needs his wife to go with him to his local Londis because he might forget the paper and bread when his mind wanders off when he sees half the milk has blue tops and half green tops.

I can remember going to he Picture Houses in Preston back in the sixties. There was the ABC, The Odeon, the Ritz and The Palladium. Usually to watch a 'B' film in black and white and the 'A' film in colour. After the credits had rolled on the 'A' film you were obliged to stand and listen to the National Anthem before leaving quietly.

I must admit, after all these years, I was one of those who used to sneak out early as not to listen to it.

A lot of people lack self confidence about singing in public and/or they just sound terrible. The sound picking up usually the tuneless singers as last night's did with Harry Kane confirms my point.

As long as all stand to attention and respect both anthems, that's fine by me.

If Lee Carsley can keep delivering a positive approach, and hopefully, results, that should be fine for England fans.

Report Emitdeb September 8, 2024 2:21 PM BST
I couldn't care less if the reason was *I cant be arsed or I cant carry a tune*.. It's if he has republican or political objection tendencies and is refusing to sing for that reason. I'd have a problem.

If he refuses to wear the poppy come November.. I'd want him out, regardless of results.

Maybe he doesn't feel like wearing emblems celebrating war criminals.
Report mesmerised September 8, 2024 3:44 PM BST
The Poppy was introduced to help commemorate those that lost their lives in the first World War, how were they criminals ?  It's nothing to do with Ireland, though the British had no business ever being in Ireland or anyone elses' country. Blair is the war criminal and his mate Campbell.

Report Emitdeb September 8, 2024 6:52 PM BST
Refusing to wear the poppy come November, imo would be behaving incorrectly and I have no doubt would be met by a backlash from a large section of England fans..

I have no knowledge of Mr Carsley's political opinions at all.. I'm basing my opinions on possible scenarios that might occur..

Report mesmerised September 8, 2024 10:01 PM BST
It is dated, most English people are atheist and have limited interest in Royalty, it's the tourists that flock here that give off the impression that they are still popular. I'm neither a Royalist or Anti Royalists, I'm non plussed, but their relevance died out a very long time ago and Charles has no connection with the general public at large, most think he's just a bit of an oddball that speaks to plants.

I'd rather the National anthem was 'All Together Now which would be far more relevant 'The lyrics were written about the Christmas Day Truce in World War I where, on Christmas Day 1914, soldiers from both sides put their weapons down, and met in no mans land to exchange gifts and play football.'

Yeah, I thought so to mate.
Another false dawn perhaps ?
We shall see eh?
But that squad, those players, so much potential.
How many times have we heard, read and said  THAT line ?
Won't know until they face some serious opposition I suppose.

His first two games in charge should at least give him a chance to move things around a bit.
For what it's worth, I blame the tictacs, and I think they play too many games.
Also the players have always seemed shackled, to MY eye, maybe they're just tired.
But what do I know ?
Good luck to him, and THEM, I say.
