The joke at the time was that when Mortensen passed away they called it the Matthews Funeral

I actually went to a leg of both semi finals that year .. QPR at home to Liverpool and Villa at home to Oxford.  I went with an old schoolfriend who had recently joined the Metropolitan Police. May well have been the last time I saw him.  Think QPR won the home leg 1-0.  Can't remember the Villa score, but Oxford and QPR made it through.  At the time I lived in Loftus Road, so didn't have far to travel.

Took the train up to Villa Park and shared a carriage with the lead actor in Howard's Way, who died shortly after.
