When I was younger I used to deliver papaers to Steve Heighway. He used to be a teacher so always had the Times Educational Supplement every week - Really thick and heavy.
Needless to say I never ever got a tip off him at Christmas - tight sod
Decent footballer mind

Ian James Rush MBE (born 20 October 1961) is a Welsh former professional footballer who played as a forward. He is regarded as one of the best strikers of all time and one of the best Welsh players in the history of the sport.[6][7][8] At club level Rush played for Liverpool from 1980–1987 and 1988–1996. Additionally, he is the club's all-time leading goalscorer, having scored a total of 346 goals in all competitions at the club. He also holds the records for being the highest goalscorer in the history of the EFL Cup and the finals of the FA Cup. At international level, Rush made 73 appearances for the Wales national football team and remained the record goalscorer with 28 goals between 1980 and 1996, until the record was broken by Gareth Bale in 2018.
Regarded as one of Liverpool's greatest ever players,[9][10] Rush came 3rd among Liverpool players in an official Liverpool fan poll, 100 Players Who Shook The Kop.[11] He also had short spells with Chester City, Juventus, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Sheffield United, Wrexham and Sydney Olympic. Since retiring as a player in 2000, Rush has had a stint as manager of Chester City (2004–05), and has worked as a television football pundit.[12]
Rush was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1996 New Year Honours for services to association football

My Grandad always said Billy Liddell, and he saw Barnes, Dalglish etc.
So that generation are now all but gone, but everyone one of them would say Billy Liddell, so it must hold some credence.
As he was way before my time Daglish and Suarez
So my top 5
1- Daglish 2- Suarez 3- Barnes 4- Salah 5- Rush

Was only there a couple of years but was basically prime Rush level both seasons.
Kicking him out was maybe the 1st mistake in their decline as he would have had 3 or 4 more years at top level IMO
John Aldridge worth a mention at least. Was only there a couple of years but was basically prime Rush level both seasons.Kicking him out was maybe the 1st mistake in their decline as he would have had 3 or 4 more years at top level IMO
They kept Rush, who was obviously the greater player over their careers, but his best seasons were all pre Juventus.
From 1987, to 1994 (when they were both coming to the end) Aldridge was superior.

I came across the question yesterday when watching a program on great Liverpool United games and Brian Moore said when the players were coming out Liverpool play in yellow for the first time,of course nowadays it would be no big deal as teams turn out in all sorts of gear and colours.
Fa cup replays were a great thing the fans loved them in the fact the greatest ever fa cup goal was scored in a replay but sadly they are no more.
As you say English football was great back then the program started at the 77 cup final and the teams been proudly led out in front of a stadium buzzing with excitement they were very happy days then the world moved on we now have var which without question has spoilt the game more than anything else could ever do.

My memory of Liddell was seeing him score an equaliser against West Ham in a second division game at Upton Park in 1958.

He was very highly rated but as I said jimnast I only really remember seeing him in the second division. Mind you he scored that day with a great free kick and as you know those old footballs were not anything like the balls they play with now and you couldn't bend them round a defensive wall.

uncle good shout 2 brilliant players, but not up there with King Kenny.
The 3 of them, management structure, ended up bossing Celtic for a while in Scotland, never worked out, but Rangers were real good side at time.
