Technically a penalty in the same way that a Mankad is technically a run out. Though I know there is no such debate about the spirit of the game in football. Which is a shame.
Tuchel is a wily old fox and is playing the long game here. His 'angry outburst' was a clever ploy to ensure that next week's referee is on the right side.

So Raya takes a goal kick from the centre of the 6 yard line and the ref blew the whistle and Gabriel puts the ball down in the right spot and takes it again?
I wouldn't necessarily believe what Tuchel says. It would be ridiculous to give it and very easy for the VAR to say that the goal kick was taken from the wrong spot so no pen/ball wasn't in play.

Sorry I am wrong there, the kick out can be taken from any point in the 6 yard box. Very strange from Gabriel. Would like to see what signals the ref was giving tho. Seems as if Gabriel thought it had to be retaken.

Ref had back to play and was told by lino what happened.(apparently)
It's a possible penalty, but ref has done right thing and allowed restart as is his right.
VAR won't get involved over ref, as it's a trivial offence with no advantage gained, and right at start of var protocol they decided var wasn't for stuff like this.
I've seen it happen a few times over the years but more often at free kicks,...

The UEFA refs seem to act with a lot more common sense. They're under less media scrutiny than in the PL or other domestic leagues. There should always be some element of fairness in giving a pen, it is a potentially game changing sanction in a low scoring sport. Since VAR there have been so many given where the sentence doesn't fit the crime.
Not even a foul or hindrance involved in this one but by the letter of the law it was a pen. Didn't think Saka's was a pen either. I'm asking why he preferred sticking his leg out when he had an open goal? Jesus does this a lot too. Neuer was clever tho, moved his leg forward from the hip without extending his knee or foot. Made it look like he wasn't moving his leg forward when he actually was. I'd say he expected Saka was going to go past him and to just brush him a little bit but not enough for a pen, but the bulk of the contact came from Saka imo.

Exactly this was my take on the incident as well. The conclusion I came to is that at full speed Saka had assessed the keeper was coming out at pace, but was not going to get there first, so his mindset was I'm going to get a pen. Keeper slightly pulled out to avoid collision and because Saka was committed to touching the ball first his momentum would not have allowed him to follow the ball around the keeper, hence the exaggerated leg movement. Slowed down it looks like they have all the time in the world to make decisions, but in reality it is a split second. I've seen plenty of pens given in similar circumstances over the years.
I thought the ref had a reasonable game overall and he did book Harry Kane for arm contact with Gabriels chin.

Apparently Arsenal often take kick outs like this but Raya throws the ball to Gabriel from the same position and then Gabriel puts it down with his hands.

It's been refreshing to see the debate over Saka pen and far more balanced views.
Ref gives it and it stands,...
Ref has generally good game and gets more respect, perhaps.. (?)
