Who is the game commentator? It's not the bloke who's been sidelined for being non-pc, is it? He commentated regularly on the Women's International at one time. I cannot remember his name now.

This game is a great example of one of the quotes from "The Sayings of Dr Slicer", available at all not very good bookshops, nowhere in the country: "One goal is NEVER enough, except when it's enough!"

Thanks 'Slicer'. Mr Pearce is back. He disappeared from the screen all of a sudden. Someone mentioned he blurted something not pc. But, I'm glad Jonathan Pearce is back.

Why did ref have to be told it was a Red, not a yellow... Regardless of whether inside the box or just outside?
Didn't affect that part of the decision Seems to me the refs just taking the easy way out and happy to be corrected

Yhtl... Why is it either... Free kick and red or penalty and yellow? Why not penalty and red?
Because the laws state an attempt to win ball in the box triggers double jeopardy, and a yellow card is awarded with the pen.

Was there an attempt to win the ball? Just shown it again side on and he just clips his legs , nowhere near the ball

what i cant work out is sterling has always had the worst kickingt, passingt tecnique you,ll ever see on a pro footballer,he cant possibly hide that lack of technique in training so why do pooch, other players etc allow2 him to dictate who takes the set pieces/pens etc

1tp...don't know about the manager but the other players may give him more respect than he's really due because of being the senior pro among quite a few youngsters

Reg, the ref thought he had attempted to play ball and that's subjective rather than absolute.
VAR won't overturn that on a close decision, but we will never know because they determined the foul was outside the box anyway.

Yhtl, thanks again Seems crazy that VAR wouldn't have overturned it if they could see on the replay that he had made no attempt to play the ball, but I understand that there are these rules where no obvious error etc

It would have depended on refs discussion with var.
If it was in box...
If var were convinced he made no attempt to play ball they would have called ref to monitor, and ref could view replay knowing var thought he made an error and no genuine attempt to play ball in their opinion.
Then, likely, ref goes with var, and gives red.
