Worst decision I have ever seen.

That ref was atrocious in the WC final as well.

Absolutely disgraceful VAR interference again. Since the F1 debacle in the last race in 2021, I've stopped watching that sport. VAR last couple of seasons is bringing me to the same place. Time to give up on football not worth investing the time when results are being determined by keyboard idiots.

There is no way in my opinion that that penalty kick should be given.

Was the decision worse than Andy Madley's in the Newcastle Arsenal game?

BUT, the conspiracy theorist views on why the decision was given are absolutely hilarious.

Its about impartiality ie. equal fairness/treatment of all rivals. PSG are an established CL team, Newcastle are the new kids on the block. There were two very similar penalty incidents in last night's game. VAR gave both decisions to PSG whoch didn't particularly impartial to me.

I'm not a Newcastle supporter, but it was not a penalty, the ball bounced on to his hand from his chest and his arm was not in an unatural position as he was running for the ball, on top of that TNT sports showed an incident earlier in the game where the ball hit a newcastle players knee and on to his hand, VAR looked at that and didn't give it, and there was absolutely no difference between the 2 incidents, VAR is making a mockery of the game.
Report Rider November 29, 2023 9:56 AM GMT
you'll see 10 like that this weekend and they wont be given because referees instinctively know unnatural actions by a defender, if you freeze the handball last night 5 players in the box had their hands in exactly the same positions, why? because players dont run with their arms by their side

i dont think the ref wanted to give it last night but as soon as var called him over and gave him the freeze frame he was obliged to give it, a very unjust outcome but maybe it will help get things changed in the future by IFAB

VAR for controversial PSG penalty against Newcastle stood down by Uefa

The VAR who recommended the controversial penalty that denied Newcastle victory over Paris St-Germain in the Champions League has been stood down from his next match.

Tomasz Kwiatkowski has been told by Uefa that he will not take charge of video refereeing duties at Wednesday’s Champions League Group D fixture between Real Sociedad and Red Bull Salzburg. The decision indicates the Polish official has been punished for the decision that led to Kylian Mbappé’s equaliser in the eighth minute of added time at the Parc des Princes.

Kwiatowski is a highly experienced referee who performed VAR duties at last year’s World Cup final, part of the same officiating team that took charge of Tuesday night’s match. He has a close working relationship with the referee Szymon Marciniak.

Newcastle had been on the verge of an important away win when the ball struck the arm of Tino Livramento. The ball hit Livramento’s arm after bouncing off his chest and the incident was initially waved away by Marciniak. The referee stopped play shortly afterwards and, after communication with Kwiatowski, went to the VAR monitor before awarding a spot-kick.

Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, said: “It wasn’t the right decision in my opinion. There are so many things to take into account at that moment, the speed first.

“It was a ricochet that when it is slowed down looks completely different to the live event. The ball hits his chest first, comes up and hits his hand. But his hand is not in an unnatural position, it is down by his side but he is in a running motion. I feel it is a poor decision and it’s hugely frustrating for us.”

There were more strident comments from pundits, including the Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, who called the decision “disgusting”. The interpretation put on events was that Kwiatowski had insisted on a more lenient interpretation of the handball law.

VARs should seek to intervene in a referee’s decision-making only if they feel a “clear and obvious” error has been made and many watching the match did not feel that applied. It appears that Uefa is of the same mind.

Then, to wind us up a bit more

The VAR who awarded Paris Saint-Germain's controversial added-time penalty against Newcastle United in the Champions League has been removed from duty by UEFA on a game on Wednesday night.

Polish VAR Tomasz Kwiatkowski sent referee Szymon Marciniak to the pitchside monitor in the 96th minute of Tuesday's match after the ball struck the arm of Tino Livramento, which was judged to be making his body bigger and creating a barrier.

Marciniak overturned his decision and gave the penalty to PSG, converted by Kylian Mbappé to earn the home side a crucial 1-1 draw which left qualification for the round of 16 in the French club's control.

Kwiatkowski was due to act as VAR for Wednesday's meeting between Real Sociedad and FC Salzburg, but the role will now be taken on by German official Marco Fritz.

It's an indication that UEFA believes the decision to advise the spot kick was a mistake by Kwiatkowski, which could have serious implications on Newcastle's hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

In the 71st minute of the game the ball hit the arm of Newcastle's Lewis Miley in similar circumstances, yet the VAR didn't intervene.

However, although the ball deflected off the body of Livramento before it hit his arm this alone isn't the consideration against a penalty. Livramento's arm position wasn't extended away from his body and was a consequence of his body movement, so shouldn't have been a handball offence.

Refereeing decisions should be applied consistently across all jurisdictions otherwise its a different game

This should have never been given anywhere in the world given the speed, proximity and the ricochet

Given that the official has been stood down is proof that it was a wrong decision not a harsh one

The handball rule needs to be changed to something like it was in the past rather than awarding the penalty whenever the ball connected  with somewhere in the region of the arm.

Champions League VAR official stood down after controversial penalty against Newcastle in PSG match
Tomasz Kwiatkowski was due to be the VAR official in Wednesday's Champions League game between Real Sociedad and Salzburg but has now been replaced, Sky Sports News reports.

Tomasz Kwiatkowski asked referee Szymon Marciniak to go to the screen after he reviewed a potential handball by Newcastle defender Tino Livramento during Tuesday night's match.

The referee did not give the penalty on-field, but reversed the decision after looking at the incident on the screen.

Kwiatkowski was due to be the VAR official in Wednesday's Champions League game between Real Sociedad and Salzburg but has now been replaced, Sky Sports News reported.

Newcastle looked to be heading for a famous 1-0 win in Paris until the penalty was awarded against Livramento, allowing Kylian Mbappe to level in the eighth and final minute of added time.

Speaking on Sky's Soccer Special, former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood labelled the decision "disgusting", while Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said referee Marciniak should have been stronger to disregard Kwiatkowski's advice.

Howe said the referee had been placed under "extreme" pressure by the PSG players, and later labelled the decision "poor".

Had Newcastle won, they would have had their Champions League destiny in their own hands.

Instead, they must now beat AC Milan in their final group game and hope Dortmund get at least a point against PSG to progress to the knockout stages.

IFAB, who set out the laws of world football, have laid out guidelines on what does and doesn't constitute a handball offence - though leagues also have their own individual interpretations.

More generally, for the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. Not every touch of a player's hand/arm with the ball is an offence.

It is an offence if a player:
• deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball
• touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player's body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised
• scores in the opponents' goal: Directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper or immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental
