I'm guessing it's not a re-telling of Bambi.  In any case I think I'll give it a miss. "Reacher" is garbage even worse than the books (or the one that I managed to finish). Severance is funny at times, but too much of a slog to watch more than about 4 episodes. Silo is slow and nothing much happens, had to give up after 3 eps. From is weird but addictive. The first 2 series were very good.

Reacher is quite ridiculous (I've watched the first two seasons) and the lead character is extremely wooden. I'll probably keep watching for mindless entertainment though.

Report s.kenbo May 31, 2025 5:47 AM BST
I like Tom Cruise but don’t really like many of his films (ironically he plays Reacher in two films, they’re not bad). Rain Man was brilliant at the time.

I watched The Thin Red Line which is streaming on Disney+ atm.  Has an all star cast.  Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, John Travolta.  Some people rave about it but I just think it's OK.  It reminded me of Spielberg's series "The Pacific" which I think is excellent.

Woody Harrelson - another who I just can't watch with any enthusiasm.  Certainly can't be calling him a star.  Just my opinion.
And agreed, Cruise was surprisingly good in Rain Man but I just watched A Few Good Men and it was like man against a boy - Nicholson v Cruise.  The gulf in real acting ability and star presence was glaring for me.
Still Tom keeps laughing all the way to the bank, as we used to say.
Report PorcupineorPineapple May 31, 2025 6:06 PM BST
Tom Cruise is actually a good actor. He's just spent the last ten years playing Peter Pan and trying to prove he can do mad stunts while in his eighties.
Report PorcupineorPineapple May 31, 2025 6:11 PM BST
Watched Trainspotting 2 the other day. Seen it before but wanted to check it out again.

Firstly, got to say it's worth it just for the scene in the social club. That's just a great few minutes. But I don't think I've seen any sequel that spends such a high percentage of its time simply replaying scenes from the first film or at least making such overt nods back. Just felt like little more than a nostalgia-fest for fans of the original rather than any real progressing of the story.
Report s.kenbo May 31, 2025 6:52 PM BST
Nicholson stole the show in a Few Good Men. His ‘You can’t handle the truth’ line is the first that springs to mind when you hear the film mentioned.

It was Dustin Hoffman who stole the show in Rain Man.
Report s.kenbo May 31, 2025 6:53 PM BST
100% agree TS2 was a nostalgia-fest for the fans. Was pretty disappointing imo.

Still, he has more than twenty years to make up on the great Clint Eastwood.

I watched the Caitlyn Jenner documentary on Netflix, mainly about Bruce and the Olympics. Hadn't really taken much notice of it before, but found the documentary interesting. What a mixed up life.
Report Wicklow June 2, 2025 12:55 PM BST
Seen that a few years back - very interesting alright. To be honest I had never heard of the Jenners, but the idea of an olympic decathalon gold medalist having a sex change is quiet incredible and almost unimaginable.
There is some really good sports docs all under the name of "untold", some american stuff that would have gone under the radar to most of us. There was one called Johnny Football about a high school quarter back who was destined for the big time in the NFL and ended up p!ssing it all away - quiet entertaining.
Report Aspro June 2, 2025 5:42 PM BST
I've watched a few of those Wicklow, but not the one mentioned so for next hour and 12 minutes, I'll be watching it.
Report s.kenbo June 2, 2025 6:49 PM BST
I’ve seen a few of the ‘Untold’ stories. Pretty good, would be better if you enjoyed the sport though, I don’t.

I’ve mentioned on here before I think, but the best American Football/true crime documentary I’ve seen on Netflix is Killer Inside; The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. A crazy true story of a top NFL player accused of murder.
Report Wicklow June 2, 2025 7:42 PM BST
yah that was decent viewing alright Kenbo - but its nice to find something that doesnt involve a murder every now and then. Far too much off it on tv, even though I like them as much as anyone.

Rattled through Dept Q in the last few days.

Really enjoyed it. It's a cop show set in Scotland, but it's probably most similar in tone to Slow Horses. Misfit team lead by an irrascible boss, lots of backstory and multiple overlapping cases. It doesn't drag in the middle, writing is great and the cast are all relatable. Recommend.

Maybe i should revisit it.

Just on GOT i did not watch it from the begginning but think i picked it up around mid seasion 2.

i found it totally compelling and binge watched it for a considerable period.

The only critisim i wd have of it was that it was too long (8 seasons) i think and it ran out of steam towards the end. I also found the end a tad dissappointing. Overall an iconic series and defo worth the watch.
