It's amazing what they've done to the Soccer Saturday panel over the years, used to be unmissable, laugh a minute, now I never have it on, I'd love to know what the viewing figures were a few years ago compared to now, I'd hazard a guess figures have gone through the floor. You could buy into what Le Tissier, Thompson and Nicholls had to say either because they won bucketloads and had been at the very top level or they were genuinely talented players. As time marched on it did become a bit stale but instead of moving on some of the older pundits and replacing them with maybe a Keane or Wright, personalities and winners, they brought in Dawson and Clinton Morrison amongst some other dross pundits, cost cutting, quantity (salary) over quality. Jeff has been carrying the current mob since the old guard left, voluble and loquacious in a non irritating way, sharp wit, humour, self deprecation, personable, natural and being from working class stock were all ingredients that made him the best sports presenter there's been, the Middlesbrough rant, Kammie missing the red card and fighting like Beavers moments were all gold, made Lynam, Lineker and the rest seem like dull church going presenters in comparison, he's the benchmark, though it doesn't actually matter who the replacement is, this show has had it's day, thanks for the memories. Kind Regards.
I think this is mostly overblown tbh. Thompson and Nicholas were always ridiculously biased towards their respected clubs. And I doubt post-pandemic figures have dropped much from pre-pandemic. Obviously they will have dropped like a stone during the pandemic, because there was a time the 3pm's were being televised.
Jeff's shoes will be basically impossible to fill. Whoever is coming in is going to have to put their own take on it, as trying to replicate feels doomed to fail.
