A brilliant presenter who will be very difficult if not impossible to follow.

"Funny old game - Saint"

That was a sad day, too.

has always been first class.....used to front the greyhounds when sky covered big night meetings on their main channel.....shows the human nature that many of us relate to....hope he has a wonderful retirement.....and his beloved Hartlepool get back into the leagues.....

It's amazing what they've done to the Soccer Saturday panel over the years, used to be unmissable, laugh a minute, now I never have it on, I'd love to know what the viewing figures were a few years ago compared to now, I'd hazard a guess figures have gone through the floor. You could buy into what Le Tissier, Thompson and Nicholls had to say either because they won bucketloads and had been at the very top level or they were genuinely talented players. As time marched on it did become a bit stale but instead of moving on some of the older pundits and replacing them with maybe a Keane or Wright, personalities and winners, they brought in Dawson and Clinton Morrison amongst some other dross pundits, cost cutting, quantity (salary) over quality.

Jeff has been carrying the current mob since the old guard left, voluble and loquacious in a non irritating way, sharp wit, humour, self deprecation, personable, natural and being from working class stock were all ingredients that made him the best sports presenter there's been, the Middlesbrough rant, Kammie missing the red card and fighting like Beavers moments were all gold, made Lynam, Lineker and the rest seem like dull church going presenters in comparison, he's the benchmark, though it doesn't actually matter who the replacement is, this show has had it's day, thanks for the memories. Kind Regards.

Jeff is a legend, brilliant presenter...only thing should have finished with the others ,bet he regrets that but probably not the easy money... sky sports is now practically unwatchable lose the premier games and it's finished and there's plenty of other channels around the world covering them now with every game live.

Did he ever succumb to having a woman in his studio? I know Sue Smith was often kept in a cupboard! never actually saw any female on his panel..
Report SlippyBlue May 29, 2023 3:30 PM BST
Yes I agree that's a good post by Mes.

Let the programme drift away quietly and stick a d.n.r. notice on it for good measure.
Report leazes67 May 29, 2023 3:51 PM BST
He must have dreaded going in to work with the likes of Clinton Morrison and Paul Merson who couldn't string a sentence between them.
Report Winja May 29, 2023 4:31 PM BST
I could not disagree more than some of the comments on here…….still the go to show if your home on a Saturday afternoon and although there have been a selection of analysts they have all added to the show as have the roving reporters……will still go on and I’m sure the audience will remain pretty constant……especially as. Sky put it on the news channel which is free view……ll

You can't compare him to Lynam, they are completely different characters but both equally brilliant. Lynam was a smooth presenter who effortlessly anchored the shows he was involved in, he navigated his way through the national that never was completely off the cuff as if it was  walk in the park, drop Stelling into the same spot and his head might have exploded.
Report comingupthehill May 29, 2023 6:49 PM BST
The lynam classic.

I think this is mostly overblown tbh. Thompson and Nicholas were always ridiculously biased towards their respected clubs. And I doubt post-pandemic figures have dropped much from pre-pandemic. Obviously they will have dropped like a stone during the pandemic, because there was a time the 3pm's were being televised.

Jeff's shoes will be basically impossible to fill. Whoever is coming in is going to have to put their own take on it, as trying to replicate feels doomed to fail.

Great presenter. Remember when Arsenal were playing Chelsea (I think) and it was lashing rain and after he got his hat trick Jeff made a quip about it being time for a Kanu.

I grew up with lots of Jeff Stellings and Chris Kamaras, on Teesside in the 1960s and 70s. Football was in our blood. Its not fashionable now to be male, northern and working class - a "likely lad" type character.
