Of course but in fact English teams did better in Europe before the influx of foreign players
And won the World Cup also

Eight English players in Liverpool’s first victory

There was actually 9 English players in Liverpool`s first victory and a Welshman and an Irishman.

And 11 Scots who were all born in Glasgow area when Celtic became the FIRST ever winners. A feat that will never be equalled again.

A wonderful achievement by Glasgow Celtic
But of course there is an advantage if you are playing consistently in the European cup
The very fact that English football is so competitive and especially when only the winners of the league would qualify
Meant that even great teams such as Man Utd the first winners might have the one chance to win every maybe even every ten years

Liverpool managed to break this with their dominance , which naturally led to dominating  ( although still with spells from other teams such as cloughs forest ) in Europe
It was a colossal achievement

I would agree with that. Colossal achievement indeed. And Clough`s achievement with Forest too.

It’s easier now , even Chelsea have been European champions this year
Of course they shouldn’t really have had the chance to win and wouldn’t in the past

Yes , I don’t think what Clough achieved at Forest , and Derby also can be matched by any other manager
It’s beyond understanding really

I remember I think it was Atletico Madrid butchering Celtic and Jimmy Johnstone in particular. When I say butchering I am not talking metaphorically! I think the game may have been flagged at some future point for possible referee nobling!

Sourness and players like that for Liverpool put a stop to any nonsense on the pitch
He was a very important factor in Liverpool’s success in Europe

And Leeds Utd would probably have won it in 1970 but were knocked out by the great Celtic team in the semi-final. Having defeated the brilliant Leeds team, they thought that they just needed to turn up for the Final and were beaten by Feyenoord after extra time.

... and lets not forget Aston Villa, another magnificent achievement.

.... now the competition is ruined and all about money, money, money, and British teams full of mercenaries only interested in cash.

I mean I saw the great Roberto Duran knee Ken Buchanan in the hee haws but that was boxing. To do it and get away with it in a football match beggars belief!

No team should have allowed Johnstone to be kicked around
It was players like Souness responsibility to make sure it didn’t happen

Yes agree Mac that Leeds team were I sometimes think the best I have seen
Celtic beat them and should have won the European cup again

Ken Bates sadly passed away yesterday I think.

But as I said , Leeds didn’t get too many chances as they kept being pipped in the league ,
And then it’s too late

tbf Ken Bates did great work for football, football fans and The FA in screwing multi millions of pounds for The Wembley Stadium White Elephant from a couple of useless Sports Ministers and the Tax Payer.

I am talking tens of millions of pounds!

I was at that match whispering. Atletico dropped all their star players and put out a side of henchmen whose only job was to stop Celtic playing, Jimmy in particular. 1974 and It was brutal. Imagine how the divers of today would cope with that. Wee Jimmy got slaughtered that night and I don`t think anybody could accuse him of diving. Worth a watch for younger posters who probably haven`t seen it.

Sorry to hear that Mick has sadly passed away. That was a great Leeds team. Should have won European Cup in 1975. RIP Mr Bates.

I remember the game! Looking back now it is equally shocking. I know the Leeds Game against Munchen in '75 was viewed as a possible referee corruption case. I was pretty sure this one was too but the ref covered himself by sending 3 of them off! It was a total disgrace regardless.

The Leeds v Chelsea 1970 Cup Final ( replay? ) was also equally entertaining but at least the players governed themselves! Charlton/ Osgood still makes me chuckle!

The whole squad were born within
30 miles of the ground, most of
em on the doorstep.

A fantastic achievement. Iirc
celtic conceded early then hammered
away at inter, missed a pen, equalised and
then scored winner with 5 minutes left.

Back in them days everybody i
knew wanted celtic to win, as
they did with man utd the following
year.

The bitterness came later!
