Players from Brockenhurst and Andover Town set a new record as they scored 29 consecutive penalties in a shoot-out.

The Hampshire Senior Cup match finished 0-0 after extra time, so went to spot-kicks.

And after 29 successful attempts - a total confirmed by the Football Association as an English record - Andover's Claudio Herbert missed.

"I didn't realise the magnitude, it was a bit of a blur, the keeper pulled off a great save," Herbert told BBC Sport.

The sequence of successful attempts is also thought to be a world record.

The previous English record for the most consecutive penalties scored in a shoot-out was set when Dagenham & Redbridge defeated Leyton Orient in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy Tie in 2011 after 27 consecutive successful kicks.

The record for the longest penalty shoot-out came in 2005 when the Namibian Cup had to be settled by a record-breaking 48 spot-kicks, with KK Palace holding their nerve to defeat the Civics 17-16 following a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Herbert, 20, who is a full-time student, says he never dreamed he would need to take two penalties in the shoot-out but would have no hesitation stepping up and doing it all again.

"I was excited but nervous," he said. "I never thought I'd have to take the 30th penalty in a shoot-out.

"I've been involved in penalty shoot-outs before, but nothing like this. There was not so much pressure.

"I would definitely take another one. I'd never shy away from taking a penalty."

He says despite the miss his team-mates attached no blame to him, adding: "I was just thinking 'oh no, it's going to be on TV - I'm going to miss a penalty on TV'."

His manager at Andover, Neil Benson, said the defeat was hard to accept at the end of a game which began at 19.40 BST and ended at 23:00 BST.

"It was a tough one to take," Benson told BBC Sport. "It was with some disbelief after the first set of penalties that we had to do it all over again. Every credit to the 11 players from both sides."

Herbert had the unfortunate task of trying to level at 15-15, but the keeper pulled off an astonishing save.

"He is an excellent player and will continue to be confident with everything he does on the pitch," added Benson. "It won't affect him and given the opportunity he will step up and do it again."

1,894 out of 2,278 penalties awarded in Premier League history have been scored ( as of early 2021), equating to a success rate of 83.14 per cent. Thats around 1.2 odds not 1.33.. europa odds may differ a little but as one of the teams is a premier league team probably accurate. That said I'd sooner play a ghost in goal than poor david so who knows what the odds are

ok, 83% in EPL. Was higher than I thought, but let's go with that and 1.20. (There must be some leagues with poor penalty kicking out there for this 75% number I saw being listed).
46 for 21 in a row which is not 399 but still shows how unlikely it is.

If we go increase to 1.25 to take guys like Lindelöf and Villarreal GK into consideration it's 108.

I would suggest that since the introduction of the dreaded VAR more penalties are being scored than pre VAR because goalkeepers are no longer able to cheat and come off there line before the ball is struck thereby narrowing the angle as some keepers really took the biscuit and were almost shaking hands with the penalty taker
Report n88uk May 27, 2021 12:21 PM BST
As crap as De Gea is at penalties, hardly the reason Utd lost.

Some of the worst in game management I think I have ever seen from a manager. No subs for about 100 minutes? What was the purpose of bringing James and Tuanzebe on in the 117th minute? They didn't even take a penalty in the first 5, you can't seriously claim that was an attempt to win the game. Utd lost all impetus through lack of subs, and barely tried winning the game for about the last 40 minutes or so as a result. I saw Scholes claim it shows the lack of squad at Utd, are we meant to believe Villarreal had better options on the bench or that Emery just knew how to use a squad better in a game. In the end Utd got what they deserved really, and I say that as a Utd fan, for all the dominant spells of possession Utd had, what saves did their goalkeeper have to make? I can only remember 1 straight at him all game, shocking.

As for the penalties. Both goalkeepers were poor really. Penalties is often about presence, the best goalkeepers can psyche out the taker, neither had any presence whatsoever, and they weren't even really trying anything different either as penalty after penalty went past them.

Rashford had a shocker full stop. He should have been one of the players hooked after about 70 mins. I actually find his comments after the game a bit strange about playing through pain as that's how much he/they want to win for the fans. It might sound good talk, but reality is he's been poor for a while, if you're that injured it's affecting your performance, maybe you need to stop? This could easily affect England too if Southgate keeps picking him.

I'd have taken Rashford off early second half and put Pogba on the left where he's good. Also got more crosses in and had more shots. You've got Cavani in there who will find space and be first to rebounds but instead he decided to play it sideways across their box for the most part. You'd swear United were 3-0 up when they were a goal down the way they were playing. Plenty of opportunities to get balls in early but they just passed it back to the centre circle I don't know how many times.

He's played Rashford for months whilst being clearly injured, the guy is cluless, he just runs the same players into the ground, you can't do that, 99% of teams bench player are weaker, does that mean you play the same 11 every game for 90 mins? Nope.

The players were shattered by the end, tired out after 70 some of them, as for Van Der Beek he definitely should have come on, but he's not in Ole's special club so he never plays. Yes I'd have brought on Dan James later on as well, both were fresh, that's the point.

Here's what Bielsa for example does with a squad of championship players built with a peanuts budget, and a few above average players sprinkled in, Rodrigo, Raphinia, Phillips, Bamford. If you're not doing the job, you're coming off, if you're injured, you're coming off, if he sees changes need to be made, you're coming off, he's doesn't care who you are either - you're coming off. Phillips is integral to Leeds, but if he's injured he doesn't play...

Tactically the guy is a complete joke, Emre had him on toast from KO, so how does Ole react? how does him change things up, give Emre something to think about?

He doesn't, he just sits there oblivious and cluless hoping something happens whilst the game drifts. His ineptitude and unwillingness to do anything in a game is truly staggering, people in the game must be pissing themsleves laughing, it's like watching a pub team being managed.

Yes totally agree.  OGS can only pick the players we have.  If he had De Bruyne, Salah, VVD, Diaz, Kante, Son, Kane he'd pick them. We don't however have them to choose from though.

Even with our better players this year:

Martial is non existent for about 7 out of 8 games.

Rashford seems nothing more than a fast runner just running into defenders.  Has been poor for months.  Seems to run absolutely fine too so don't read too much into this "he's injured" nonsense.  Bet he plays in three weeks time for England too.  Anyone wanna bet me?

Bruno has flashes of greatness but the whole package is so over rated.  Been poor for months too, often does nothing in the big games, exaggerated goal stats as half of them are penalties.  As proved last night anyone, no make that EVERYONE can knock those in.

Pogba has been such a let down.  One good game in 7 or 8 just like Martial.  Looks slow, a bit heavy he's another so over rated.

Greenwood and Cavani I'll say are good players who often deliver and certainly cause problems.

I like the two full backs, wouldn't swap them for any others in the league.

Two keepers are just not good enough, Lindelof too easily pushed aside.  Bailly an accident waiting (and you usually don't have to wait long!) to happen.

Maguire also not good enough, too slow.  He's not bad don't get me wrong but he's far from good.

Mctominay another who's just ok and Fred no more than second division standard.

So you see when OGS goes to put his names on the Team Sheet ....................... that's all he's got to choose from.  Have a look who Pep has to choose from!

Well, I think they clearly were tired especially in ET, why would players ask to come off when they know Ole doesn't make subs?

Donnie Van Der Beek has never had a run in the side for a start as clearly Ole doesn't want him.

City and Liverpool would have broken them down, do you know why? because they have movement in their play and are not toally static. This is because Ole hasn't got a clue tactically, he doesn't even get the team to do pass and move basics to create space, everybody just stands in a line...it's watching bar football...

If it wasn't for a whole host of lucky come from behind wins (a pattern which wiill not be repeated next season) Ole would have been exposed for the clueless chancer he is.
