Report Giuseppe April 13, 2021 11:31 PM BST
where does liverpool's wealth come from? it's not from merseyside.

it's all those foreign fans in america, norway and china.

99% of continetal clubs can't compete with that

Qatar are just levelling the playing field
Report lurka April 14, 2021 10:12 AM BST
It's not from foreign fans but where did all those foreign fans come from? From decades of success and being well-run.
They bridged the gap primarily by being savvy in the transfer market and making profit on player sales to fund purchases, something City and PSG have never had to do. They are financially poorly run clubs who write a blank cheque to balance the books and then dress it up as legit sponsorship. They don't have the same international fanbases because PSG has only existed since 1970 and City were a basket case of a club and went down to the 3rd tier at one point and did nothing on the international stage for decades.
Report Giuseppe April 14, 2021 12:31 PM BST
do you think it's right than West Brom can outbid clubs like Ajax and Marseille for players?

and if a wealthy owner tries to help  Ajax that's "cheating"?
Report Giuseppe April 14, 2021 12:32 PM BST
Marseille have existed for a lot longer than 50 years and they can't compete either
Report ffaith April 14, 2021 3:04 PM BST
If they can keep the front 3 fit they must be favourites.  After them the drop off in quality is steep(Kean, Icardi)
Report lurka April 14, 2021 4:19 PM BST
Marseille? LOL. They can't compete with PSG at home FFS never mind in Europe. And their most successful period was when they were bankrolled by a sugar daddy in the 80s and 90s. Of all the French clubs they can hardly complain and are the worst example you could have used. Perhaps if one of their CL places and CL money wasn't taken away by Qatar every year they'd have a better chance.

The fact is PSG, City and Chelsea are all big clubs already well capable of being competitive in Europe if they were well run and they already have much bigger legit revenues than Ajax. But their owners have no interest in doing it fairly and want to outbid the biggest clubs in Europe and distort the market for everyone else by doing so.

There will always be big clubs but they are built on decades of success and large fanbases accumulated because of that and that's all fair and natural.
Report Giuseppe April 14, 2021 4:31 PM BST
Marseille are the most popular and most successful club in France, have a huge stadium and probably have a similar turnover to Brighton

no French club, no matter how well run, can compete with the money provided to premier league clubs by tv deals

do you think tv money is what should be deciding who wins the champions league?
Report Giuseppe April 14, 2021 4:32 PM BST
do you think it's right that clubs like Celtic and Ajax have virtually no chance of winning the champions league?

Being competitive does not mean the same thing as winning it. Plenty of massive clubs haven't won it even before big money distorted everything and some much smaller ones have. City and PSG haven't won it either. Does that mean they're not competitive?

i'm not sure what point you're making

marseille are hardly the only club to have had a wealthy owner, and not sure what the valenciennes affair has to do with anything, or monaco, they have never been france's flagship club

My point is French clubs have had to be bankrolled to win, they were never competitive naturally apart from Lyon really. The French are good now but their league is a basket case, even now, for a country of their size and always has been. All their best players leave to go to better leagues to make better money and win the biggest trophies and they leave young. It takes a Qatar to make the likes of mbappe play in France. The likes of Henry, Zidane, Vieira, Anelka etc etc were gone way before their peak. What does that tell you about the French league? It's like the dutch league relatively in terms of money and talent retention, even though France is about as big a country as the UK, Spain and Germany.

French clubs not being competitive in Europe is more to do with how their league is poorly structured financially now and before that France being underachievers for decades and not producing many great footballers. For a country of its size it should be right up there with the UK, Germany and Spain. It's ahead of all of them now in terms of talent but they all leave young as they always have. Their TV deal almost went bust a couple of months ago.
Report Giuseppe April 16, 2021 1:54 AM BST
there is no comparison between the premier league and the leagues in spain and germany

germany is even bigger and wealthier than france and their record in europe, bayern apart, is little better than france

how many german clubs have reached the european cup final?

in spain only real madrid and barcelona have big money

even milan, inter and juventus struggle to compete with the big english clubs, and lazio have no chance

it's not just france, the whole of europe (batern, madrid and barcelona aside) are struggling to comepte with premier league tv money

which is why qatars backing of PSG is a good thing, not bad

France have had consistently excellent players since the late 70s

papin won the ballon d'or during the 90s too

i think a big issue in french soccer and it's relative lack of wealth is paris

there has usually only been one big club in paris (racing for a long time, then PSG from the 80s) and even those clubs have underachieved

the french league is almost a provincial league
