Rafa Benitez has left his job at Dalian Pro.

The Spaniard is cutting short his time with the Chinese Super League club due to fears over the ongoing impact of COVID.

Benitez, whose family home is in the north-west of England, had growing concerns about potentially leaving his family for an extended period of time had the virus re-surfaced in the Far East.

And so the former Real Madrid and Liverpool chief has taken the decision not to return ahead of the start of their new season in two months' time.

He has told his current employers of the situation and talks over a severance package are on-going.
Benitez, 60, decided to take on an entirely new challenge after his time at Newcastle United came to an abrupt end.

The Magpies failed to agree a contract extension with the ex-Valancia and Chelsea chief and he was allowed to leave at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

The Champions League-winning chief was revered by the Toon Army who appreciated him staying put after the club was relegated, shortly after a rescue mission failed.

what did Rafa do that was so great at Newcastle?
Report Tiger Tiger January 23, 2021 2:48 PM GMT
Steadied the ship with extremely limited funds, in his third and final season the second half of that season's form seen us in the top 8, we could see the progress, even if it was unspectacular.

Never go back they say, I for one wouldn't like to see him return as I don't like his 'methodical' way of playing the game - however, given the choice between Rafa or Bruce, I would take Rafa every time.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 23, 2021 2:48 PM GMT
Rafa took a relegated club which was in a state and
heading further downwards and put it back together
again whilst making a profit on transfers for the owners.
Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 3:08 PM GMT
Newcastle had the best squad in the Championship and were favs to go up, what did he do in the prem that was so superior to Bruce, not that I rate Bruce, they made a small profit on transfers in 3 years and that was largely due to having to sell their best players when they were relegated so that would have happened regardless of manager and poor old Bruce has had Jolinton lumped on him by some useless scout, in his 2 full seasons in the prem Rafa had a net loss as does Bruce.

Benetiz achieved 44 then 45 points in 17/18 and 18/19, Bruce last season 44, and I don't remember great football under him, seems to be Newcastle fans just like the thought of having a CL winning manager in charge?
Report Tiger Tiger January 23, 2021 3:15 PM GMT
Your original question has already been answered.

Rafa had a net profit in transfers.
Bruce has spent around £68m.
Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 3:19 PM GMT
he made no money, the club were buying and selling not him, you sold Wijnauldum and Sissoko for near 60 mil because you were forced to after relegation, you can't give the manager a pat on the back for something that had nothing to do with him, question is the comparison in record between the two, I see virtually nothing on the pitch.
Report Tiger Tiger January 23, 2021 3:21 PM GMT
Then open your eyes ffs.
Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 3:26 PM GMT
that's just a poor answer that answers nothing, they have the same record and played the same pragmatic boring football, Rafa maybe the edge in attack but that's it.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 23, 2021 4:15 PM GMT
People said rafa wouldn't have a clue in the championship

He constructed a squad to get us promoted whilst making
a profit.

Other teams have tried to do what rafa did and can still  be
found in 3rd and 4th tiers.

When promoted back to prem league he was denied the required
investment, but still managed to compete, up to a point, with
a championship squad.

Next manager had loads to spend, yet seems to set target for
himself of getting same number of points as the guy who had no
funds.
Report Tiger Tiger January 23, 2021 4:24 PM GMT
When I said Bruce had spent £68m, I was giving him the £32m we raised from the sale of Perez and Joselu, players actually sold when Dawson was in temporary charge. The actual net spend of Bruce is therefore closer to £100m. Had those funds been give to Rafa I'm sure they would have been spent more wisely.

Still, I would prefer a different manager to Rafa when Bruce is eventually sacked.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 23, 2021 4:27 PM GMT
The other thing, of course, is that rafa speaks highly
of the club, the fans, the area, and got involved in
social projects that exist around the club giving his time and money.

Bruce complains about the fans, as he has done at
every club he has managed, even using the same phrases
to attack the fans of Sunderland, villa, and Newcastle.
Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 5:05 PM GMT
Their records in the premier league is what I was comparing, why would Benetiz not have a clue in the Championship, the football is still round, that's just pub speak.

Bruce has a bigger net spend in the premier league but neither manager sits around a table discussing transfer fees, that's above their heads and neither should take credit or blame, I somehow don't think Bruce sanctioned 40 million for a player he'd never heard or seen before in Joelinton.

Their style of football and the record with Newcastle in the Premier League is almost inseparable, ok fans maybe like Benetiz more because he says the right things but that's hardly a reason to bring back the same manager. Unless he was promised a lot of money and the signings would be his then bottom half of the table would be the ceiling again.

wtf has his previous record at other clubs got to do with anything,Laugh

we all know Benetiz has a superior history and CV, but most of that was years and years ago, in more recent times at the same club I fail to see the difference, it's a results business, they're inseparable

it's nothing to do with parroting what talksport says because I stopped listening to that station about 4 years ago, one had Bruce spent more, on the other he was lumbered with dross, swings and roundabouts. So the solution is to bring back the same manager because he has a better CV lol
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 23, 2021 5:23 PM GMT
Do you think Bruce benefitted from taking over from rafa?

A club in good order,

Whereas rafa took over from maclaren

And had to sort it out.

I mean seriously, I'm not even sure what you point is becoming

Bruce isn't, nor ever will be as good a manager as benitez

So what is your point?
Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 5:40 PM GMT
I couldn't have been clearer, you've posted his CV, what he did for the community, how he speaks about the club and what he did in the second tier to try to justify why he's a better manager, for at least Newcastle, no need, we know his record in the past, everything else not really relevant, incidentally tier 2, a league Bruce has been promoted from 4 times, by the time Rafa started his first full season in the premier league he'd been in charge for a sufficient period, the point I'm making is that if he came back he is not going to improve Newcastle any more than what Bruce has or hasn't done yet I hear most would swap, no point.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 23, 2021 5:46 PM GMT
Lol

Either you are making a point which you seemed to do

Or you are not, which you claim.

Strange bloke
Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 5:48 PM GMT
what is difficult for you to understand hereConfused
Newcastle fans I hear want him back, point from beginning to end is there is no point as he wouldn't take Newcastle any further than he did before in the league nor improve on what Bruce has done, both which amount to the same thing. So the rationale seems to be either  a) he's a more likeable fella or b) as you've indicated, he was great in the past.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- January 23, 2021 5:53 PM GMT

Or are you going to flip back to not having a point?

Report scandanavian_haven January 23, 2021 6:04 PM GMT
I also think it's kinda bordering desperation, the need to have 'a name'

having 'a name' doesn't suddenly make you a big club, you need trophies and success for that, Benitez was great in his day but really all he's interesting in is money, hence the China move, though had to come back for health reasons
