I imagine Moyes is a good decent guy but unfortunately he just isn't good enough for the modern game. I've never known a manager make so many really good players look so bad. Reality is if you let the other side have twice as much possession sooner or later you will concede plenty of goals unless you are hoping they miss their chances, the goalie plays a blinder or the woodwork saves you.

Julen Lopetegui has agreed a deal to become West Ham manager at the end of the season.

Nothing has been signed yet but the 57-year-old is close to making a return to management following his departure from Wolves in August last year.

Current Hammers boss David Moyes has come under increasing pressure after a poor run of results that has seen his side win one win of their past nine Premier League games and exit the Europa League in the quarter-finals.

West Ham were thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea on Sunday to leave them ninth in the table.

Moyes, who is out of contract in the summer, has repeatedly fended off questions about his future at the club, saying talks will not take place until after their final game at Manchester City on 19 May.

Former Spain and Real Madrid coach Lopetegui has been linked with numerous jobs since and is thought to be keen on returning to the Premier League after guiding Wolves to safety last term, having joined them when they were bottom of the table.

He won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 before moving to Molineux two years later.

Wolves finished 13th under Lopetegui last season but he had become frustrated by the club's financial situation before resigning.

Moyes, meanwhile, presided over three successive European campaigns for the first time in the club’s history and last June ended the Hammers' 43-year wait for a trophy with a last-minute victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final.

But many fans are critical of what they view as Moyes’ negative tactics.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/may/06/david-moyes-leaving-west-ham-mutual-consent

West Ham are closing in on the appointment of Julen Lopetegui after confirming that David Moyes will leave his post as manager when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Lopetegui, who has been out of work since leaving Wolves last summer, has agreed a deal in principle to take over after holding multiple rounds of talks with the London Stadium club. The 57-year-old Spaniard was lined up after West Ham decided to shelve plans to hand a new deal to Moyes, who is set to depart after four and a half mostly successful years in east London.

Moyes’s future has been uncertain for much of the campaign and his chances of staying were diminished by West Ham’s poor form during the second half of the campaign. West Ham have won four matches in all competitions in 2024 and their hopes of qualifying for Europe for the fourth consecutive season were ended by their 5-0 defeat by Chelsea on Sunday.

The humiliation at Stamford Bridge has convinced the club to provide clarity around the situation. While Moyes is ending on a disappointing note, confirming his exit will give supporters a chance to give the Scot a proper send-off when West Ham host Luton on Saturday.

Overall, Moyes has done an outstanding job since returning to the London Stadium for a second spell in 2019. He led the team away from relegation trouble after replacing Manuel Pellegrini and went on to establish them in the top half of the Premier League. They finished sixth in 2021, seventh in 2022 and won the Europa Conference League in 2023, West Ham’s first major piece of silverware in 43 years.

However, complaints over the 61-year-old’s style of play have not gone away and West Ham have been considering a change for some time. Moyes’s position was under threat during last season’s relegation battle and he has had a tense relationship with Tim Steidten, who joined as technical director last summer. It emerged last week that Steidten has been asked to stay away from Moyes and the first team for the rest of the season.
In a club statement on Monday, Moyes said: “I have enjoyed four and a half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019. When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe.

“After leading the club to safety, we guided the team to finishes of sixth and seventh in the Premier League, and I was delighted when we won the Europa Conference League title last June – the club’s first major trophy in 43 years. I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four and a half years.”

The West Ham joint-chairman, David Sullivan, offered “sincere thanks and gratitude” to Moyes.

Steidten has been involved in the search for a new manager. West Ham have held talks with Sporting’s Rúben Amorim and the former Bayern Munich manager, Hansi Flick. Amorim, whose contract contains a €15m buyout clause, has said that he is staying at Sporting.

Some figures at West Ham are in favour of a move for the 39-year-old Amorim, who is regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe. But it has never felt likely that West Ham would trigger his release clause.

Lopetegui’s availability has made dealing with him easier. His contract has not been signed but, barring a late collapse in talks, the deal is expected to be confirmed soon. Lopetegui wants to build a team capable of challenging for the Champions League. But West Ham will need to invest and bolster an ageing, light squad if they are to push on this summer.

Sullivan is believed to have been won over by Lopetegui. The former Spain and Real Madrid manager won the Europa League at Sevilla in 2020 and guided Wolves away from relegation trouble after taking over midway through last season, finishing 13th. He left Wolves because of concerns over their lack of transfer activity. Lopetegui is regarded as a workaholic and a gifted coach.

The question will be whether he can work within West Ham’s structure. He was forced to leave the Spain job after agreeing to take over at Madrid on the eve of the 2018 World Cup. He then lasted 128 days at Madrid and his three years at Sevilla ended badly.

Julen Lopetegui has chance to silence doubters in new job at West Ham

Jacob Steinberg

Former Wolves coach is tasked with improving football at club after replacing David Moyes with fans far from convinced

West Ham have been putting the succession plan in place for a while. Tim Steidten was not long into his job as the technical director when he went to David Sullivan, the co-owner, and suggested Julen Lopetegui as a potential replacement for David Moyes.

Contact was soon established, a video call with Sullivan last October giving Lopetegui an opportunity to develop a relationship with the key figure at the London Stadium. Moyes was already on borrowed time. Lopetegui was ready, unemployed and keen to work in the Premier League again. Although the job was not guaranteed to go to the Spaniard, there was a good chance that those early talks were going to result in him taking over from Moyes at the end of the season.

So it has proved. Lopetegui, whose aim is to turn West Ham into contenders for Champions League qualification, is in on a two-year deal. Rúben Amorim, the Sporting manager, said no. Hansi Flick was overlooked. A host of homegrown names were barely considered. When it came down to it, Sullivan kept veering towards Lopetegui as the right person to replace West Ham’s most successful manager of the Premier League era.

Some within the club urged Sullivan to think twice about going for the former Wolves manager. Disillusionment was also evident within the fanbase. Thirst for a change did not stop some fans from saying that the club would be better off keeping Moyes if they were not going to pay Amorim’s €15m (£13m) release clause. The theory is that Lopetegui, out of work since leaving Wolves last summer, was the cheap option. For all the 57-year-old’s qualities as a coach, some fans cannot help but feel deflated.

The concern is that West Ham went down a similar path when they ditched Moyes in 2018 and trumpeted the “high-calibre” appointment of Manuel Pellegrini. Lopetegui is the former manager of Real Madrid and Spain. He won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020. He’s managed in the Champions League. He sounds more glamorous than Moyes, whose big problem always centred around complaints over his style of play.

However, for all that some figures are pushing Lopetegui as one of the greatest coaches around, there are people whose opinions on him are less complimentary. They will point out that Lopetegui won nothing at Porto; that he lost the Spain job after agreeing a deal with Madrid on the eve of the 2018 World Cup; that he was at Madrid for all of 138 days before being fired.

A source familiar with Sevilla notes how Lopetegui fizzled out after a strong start. There is criticism of his signings there. The team declined and had six defeats from 10 matches when Lopetegui was fired in October 2022. Internal fallouts, the source says, are common. That should make things interesting with Steidten, who fell out with Moyes, and Sullivan, who can be a supportive boss and a frustrating one.
Does that argument wash? Not when you consider that West Ham were almost relegated in Rice’s final season and have signed three midfielders since his sale. Lopetegui has to address that area and find more energy. He also requires depth and quality on the flanks and alternatives to Michail Antonio up front. Perhaps, unlike Moyes, he can be trusted to use academy players.

All being well, the football will improve. Lopetegui was forced into pragmatism at Wolves, but his preference is to play an intense 4-3-3, with full-backs pushing up and creative players told to jink inside. Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paquetá – if he is still a West Ham player – will be crucial. Under Lopetegui, Sevilla’s average possession rose to more than 60%. The notion of a defensive manager is a little off. Lopetegui, a former Barcelona player, has cited Johan Cruyff as an inspiration. His win percentage in the Premier League was the highest of any Wolves manager. A 3-0 victory over Liverpool last season was evidence of Lopetegui’s tactical acumen, as was fighting back from a goal and a player down to win a crucial game against Southampton.

Perhaps the conclusion is that few managers arrive with an unblemished record. Exciting and progressive does not necessarily mean successful. After all, Moyes was once the former Manchester United, Sunderland and Real Sociedad dud. A lot of fans fumed at both of his appointments by West Ham. Moyes, the supposed definition of an ambition-free hire, ended up winning the club’s first trophy in 43 years. Lopetegui has a similar opportunity to silence the doubters.

Lopetegui will need to be patient. His decision to quit Wolves over disquiet at their transfer activity must be seen in context. Lopetegui did a fantastic job to guide Wolves out of the bottom three after his appointment in November 2022. However, the idea that he had no money is misleading. Wolves spent heavily during the January window and, although they were forced into sales because of concerns over profitability and sustainability rules, predictions that they would be dragged into another relegation battle were decisively crushed by Gary O’Neil after he was hired as Lopetegui’s replacement.

As ever, of course, the truth regarding Lopetegui probably lies somewhere in between. There is not much evidence that West Ham have hired one of the best coaches in Europe. They have, though, hired a clever, experienced coach who should be capable of finishing in the top half of the Premier League, assuming an ageing, small squad is strengthened appropriately.

West Ham, who will give Lopetegui funds, want between six and eight signings. They need to strengthen a slow, leaky defence incapable of playing a high line. A replacement for Vladimir Coufal at right-back is a must and none of the four senior centre-backs can consider themselves indispensable given that West Ham conceded 90 goals this season, a record that Moyes has put down to losing Declan Rice.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been charged by the Football Association for allegedly getting booked deliberately "for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market".

The charges relate to a Premier League game against Leicester City on 12 November in 2022, plus 2023 fixtures against Aston Villa on 12 March, Leeds United on 21 May and Bournemouth on 12 August.

The 26-year-old Brazil international had been under investigation since last summer over suspicious betting patterns.

An FA statement said: "It's alleged that he [Paqueta] directly sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in these matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting."

Paqueta, who joined West Ham from Lyon for an initial £36.5m in August 2022, said he was "extremely surprised and upset" by the charges.

"For nine months, I have co-operated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can. I deny all the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name," he added.

The charges came on the same day the Hammers confirmed the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach following the departure of David Moyes.

A West Ham statement said: "The club will continue to stand by and support the player throughout the process."

Paqueta has until 3 June to respond to the charge of "misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of FA Rules E5 and F3" subject to any request for an extension.

The games FA charges relate to
West Ham 0-2 Leicester - 12 November 2022

Paqueta booked for a 'lunge' on Leicester midfielder Boubakary Soumare in the 60th minute.

He is booked at 1-0 and the match finishes 2-0 to Leicester.

West Ham 1-1 Aston Villa - 12 March 2023

Paqueta booked for what is described as a 'lunging challenge' on John McGinn in the 70th minute, with the score at 1-1.

West Ham 3-1 Leeds United - 21 May 2023

Paqueta is booked for pulling back Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville on the counter-attack in the 65th minute.

It happens at 1-1, with West Ham going on to win 3-1.

West Ham 1-1 Bournemouth - 12 August 2023

In the opening game of this season, Paqueta is booked for handball in the 94th minute, with the match finishing 1-1.
