West Ham have enjoyed success in recent years under previous boss David Moyes - winning the 2022-23 Europa Conference League and competing in the Europa League in the seasons either side of that.
While his departure at the end of last season seemed unusual from the outside, there was a feeling Moyes' time at the London Stadium had run its course, with fans calling for a more progressive style.
Former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp said: "It's not an easy place to manage - the expectation there is very high. Whoever goes there, not only do they have to produce a winning team, they've got to produce a team that plays what West Ham fans see as the West Ham way."
But Murray, who also played for Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, felt West Ham was a "good fit" for Potter if given the time to implement his own philosophies.
"They want a better brand of football to be played at the London Stadium, and I think he'll be able to deliver that," he said.
Murray also added "entertaining football" does not just come overnight but Potter has experience of juggling style with substance.
In the Premier League era, West Ham managers have been given an average of 32 months in charge - or just over two and a half years. That is longer than Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa.
Sources with an understanding of the situation told BBC Sport Potter had received other offers since leaving Chelsea, but he had chosen West Ham given the stable ownership and a track record of allowing managers time to build.
He also felt the club had a good squad compared to others in the lower end of the Premier League and the job felt like a good fit.

23 points currently, God knows how in truth , only games we really deserved to win would be Ipswich and Palace, maybe Newcastle, but it is 23 points just the same. If Potter can sign one or two and get the best from the rest I can see a decent second half of the season. It's a funny Premiership this season with the likes of Man U, Spurs in the bottom half with Forest,Bournemouth etc near the top, but i can see a switch nearer normality in the second half. WHU have got a very nice set of home fixtures to come, if we can get some early momentum, Fulham and Palace not bad starters albeit neither of them have lost many at all lately. The average points needed to finish top half in the Prem over the last 10 years is 50.4 points. So not a huge amount more points per game needed than we've got from a stinking first half of the season under a clueless manager. I do think it will probably be above the average this season but even at 52/3 points I think that is achievable. 8-1 is freely available, I've seen worse bets.

I'm sick of saying it but the main problem Steidten is still there. When are people going to wake up at look at the facts? Over 100 million spent and mostly wasted in his time and falling out with everybody else at the club.

West Ham’s striker obsession remains unresolved after years of failure Jacob Steinberg
West Ham rarely hit the target when they buy a striker. Names such as Mido, Ilan, Benni McCarthy, Jonathan Calleri and Simone Zaza will send a shiver down the spine of Hammers supporters, who must despair at the same old mistakes being made over and over again.
This has been a constant theme since David Sullivan and the late David Gold bought the club in January 2010. The 15-year anniversary arrives on Sunday and the numbers have not improved in the eight years since I first wrote about West Ham’s striking failure, detailing how the 32 forwards bought during Sullivan and Gold’s ownership at that point had mustered 128 goals in 643 appearances.
Of course, as Arsenal are finding, landing the right goalscorer is a difficult and costly business. Why, though, do West Ham keep misfiring? The number of strikers signed is up to 40, with a return of 192 goals in 970 appearances. Niclas Füllkrug, the latest in a long line of underwhelming buys, has just been ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury sustained during last Friday’s defeat away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup. For Graham Potter, whose only fit striker for Tuesday evening’s home game against Fulham is Danny Ings (a panic buy at £12m in January 2023, five goals in 64 appearances since then), getting to grips with the foot-shooting nature of the West Ham way is one of his most pressing priorities.

It was just as West Ham imagined it when they spent more than £100m last summer. Lucas Paquetá as a false nine. Two left-backs on the pitch at the end. A defence so fragile that Alex Iwobi can score direct from two crosses. The new man in the dugout watching and wondering if life at the London Stadium is always this baffling.
This ended up being a game that West Ham tried very hard not to win, even though they led 2-0 and 3-1 after a host of comical errors from Fulham. As it was, all that mattered for Graham Potter was taking the points and finding logic in the puzzle.

The squad is a mess. I'd definitely look to get Dan Potts back from his loan. The season's all but over so find out if he's up to the Prem.
Most open season ever for getting top 6 spot and made a right mess of it.
Still can't see where we've managed to get our points total. Luckily there's 3 worse teams but they might all be a fair bit closer after our next 4 games, don't see us getting many points from them.

West Ham United History · Brian Belton · Yesterday at 00:03 · The night before the Cup Final I saw West Ham go to the dogs Now in the era of the circus that is the Premiership players go on tours of Wembley Stadium the day before a big final - but while on our regular Friday night greyhound racing, my dad and me were chatting with the team at the track. Looking back it's hardly credible just hours later I'd be watching the team at Wembley beating Division One Arsenal and ultimately parading the oldest and most storied trophy in football along the Barking Road. That said, if you passed some of the players in the street, like Alan Devonshire, who was part of the engine room of that glorious team, you might be pushed to recognise them. Dev, having swapped a flat cap for his Zapata moustache, has a bit more timber than his younger self, the player that sits in my memory jinking down left wing, still has a smile when reflecting on at the Irons’ warm-up the night before they shocked Arsenal at Wembley 45 years ago (is it really that long ago!!??). Manager John Lyall’s enlightened decision to let his squad off the leash proved inspired - although it’s hard to imagine the powder-puff crew of today being inclined to be mixing with the plebs having a flutter at the dogs at any point, let alone on the eve of a big final - even if they could find the Niagaras to break the curfew. As Alan was to say, “Players now would be amazed that John allowed us to go to the dogs the night before that final in 1980 final." “It was a bit surreal watching greyhounds racing around the Wembley track, knowing we’d be playing on the pitch in the middle of it the following afternoon with 100,000 people in the stadium and millions watching around the world. “Nearly all the lads were there - from memory, I think only David Cross and Phil Parkes stayed in the hotel - but it was great man-management because it took our minds off the final. I used to own a few dogs back then, so it was a relaxing environment and we were all sensible, only drinking Coke and enjoying the races. These days, players go on guided tours of Wembley the day before a big final - we just had a night at the dogs and a good laugh. “When we walked out on the pitch the following day, I didn’t feel any nerves. There was no pressure on us because we were massive underdogs as a Second Division club and Arsenal had been in contention for trophies all season. “Although it was my cross which led to Trevor Brooking’s winner the following day, I didn’t think I played that well personally. It was a hot day, and maybe it was one game too far for me - but it was a terrific team performance because Parkesy barely had to make any saves beyond routine. “My favourite memory was the day after, when we paraded the Cup at East Ham town hall, and the turnout was incredible. I never knew we had made so many people happy.” At 68, Devonshire’s love affair with the FA Cup shows no sign of waning. He was probably West Ham’s greatest signing, a £5,000 snip from non-League Southall, when he gave up his £80-a-week job as a forklift truck driver at the Hoover factory in Perivale across town. At the end of 2024 Alan had been manager of the National League Maidenhead for 800 games over two spells. At the start of this season his crew were 5,000-1 to win the Cup, the Hammers had slightly shorter odds. Back in 2015, the Magpies signed 6ft 4in defender Max Kilman and sold him to Wolves for £40,000 three years later. Critically, chairman Peter Griffin negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause, so when Kilman sealed a £40million move to West Ham in the summer, Maidenhead enjoyed a monster £4m windfall, securing the club’s long-term future. Dev recalled: “I told the chairman I wasn’t going to ask for an extra half-million in my budget because I know how far this club has come. We were getting crowds of 70 when I first started here - now our average gate is around 1,200 and we can be a thorn in anyone’s side on our day. “It’s fantastic to see Max doing so well. As a manager, there are few better rewards than seeing young players fulfilling their potential - and of course I couldn’t be happier that he’s landed at West Ham. It’s funny how it’s turned out.” Talking of the FA Cup Dev reflected: “I still get a buzz when it comes round because I’m lucky enough to have seen how much it means to the fans when you win it. “To people of my era, it’s still the greatest cup competition in the world, even if it seems to have lost its way a bit. For little clubs like us, it’s a chance to dream.” Like Alan, for me, the FA Cup remains the preeminent prize in the game. The ever altering European charade, with it's daft also ran trophy and consolation vase, silly processes of qualifying, and waste of space qualifying leagues, populated by the likes of Dynamo Rockall, Vatican Rovers and Locomotive Tabarca, does not have the dignity, gravity or romance of the Cup, it is so transparently a money making show to line the pockets of the already 'cash fat' cats of UEFA, while the Prem feels like a pointless procession, funded by Oil-heads, legalised yank money launderers and an array of shifty, faceless billionaires - Devo and the lads at the dogs that night were and remain part of a different breed, strapped in the decency that comes with a modicum of humility and a sense of humour

West Ham are in a strong position to sign Evan Ferguson from Brighton after Bayer Leverkusen’s need for a new forward was lessened by Al-Nassr choosing Jhon Durán over Victor Boniface.
Leverkusen emerged as frontrunners for Ferguson this week but their interest could cool after Boniface’s proposed move to the Saudi Pro League was called off at the last minute. Al-Nassr are poised to sign Durán from Villa, with the 21-year-old set to undergo a medical on Thursday.
Left to right: Genoa's Mario Balotelli, Yang Min-hyeok of Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion signing Diego Gomez. Men’s transfer window January 2025: all deals from Europe’s top five leagues Read more West Ham have been alerted to Brighton deciding that Ferguson is available on a loan or a permanent deal. However there is a lot of competition, with Arsenal, Leverkusen, Everton, Bournemouth and Tottenham making inquiries about the Republic of Ireland striker, and West Ham have drawn up contingency plans.
The club had a bid for PSV Eindhoven’s Ricardo Pepi turned down on Wednesday. The offer for the 22-year-old USA international was a loan with an obligation to buy for €25m (£21m). There is doubt over whether West Ham will return with a second offer, with some recruitment figures unsure over whether Pepi is a good fit for Graham Potter’s team.
Potter needs a forward after losing Michail Antonio and Niclas Füllkrug to injuries. West Ham have considered Ajax’s Brian Brobbey, RB Leipzig’s André Silva and Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz.
There is confidence, though, that a deal for Ferguson can be struck. A loan with an option to buy has been discussed but sources believe a bid of about £40m could be enough for a sale. Ferguson has struggled in the past 18 months and is returning from an ankle injury but is regarded as one of the best young strikers in England. Potter gave Ferguson his debut at Brighton and it has been pointed out that the 20-year-old would have a good chance of playing regularly for West Ham, who are also looking at the Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil and the Brighton defender Adam Webster.

Dom Smith 4 hours ago West Ham have agreed a deal to sign Brighton striker Evan Ferguson on a straight loan.
Ferguson is due to undergo a medical on Sunday and will move to West Ham until the end of the season.
Having come off the bench for Brighton in their 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Ferguson is not eligible to play for West Ham against Chelsea on Monday.
Ferguson will be reunited with Graham Potter, who gave him his debut at Brighton.
West Ham had made a new striker a top priority in January after losing £27million summer signing Niclas Fullkrug to a hamstring injury.
The Hammers have also been without Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio, though Bowen is closing in on a return and is targeting a comeback against Chelsea.
Ferguson has made just two Premier League starts this season, having previously been seen as one of the most promising young forwards in the Premier League under Potter and then Roberto De Zerbi.
Potter has deployed Lucas Paqueta as a makeshift striker in recent weeks.
But West Ham hope to have Ferguson available to face Brentford at home next weekend.

The club are targeting Lorient’s Eli Junior Kroupi, an 18-year-old who is also on Bournemouth’s radar after shining in Ligue 2 this season, as well as Celtic’s Daniel Cummings and the Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton.
Celtic are unhappy about the prospect of losing Cummings and it is unclear if the 18-year-old will join before the transfer window shuts on Monday night. If a deal cannot be agreed before the deadline then it is understood that Cummings will sign a pre-contract with West Ham for the summer, with compensation due to Celtic.

James Ward-Prowse is set to return to West Ham after an agreement was reached with Nottingham Forest to terminate his loan early.
The Englishman has played just three times since Christmas, totalling just 18 minutes of action, and was not even in the squad for Forest’s 7-0 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Ward-Prowse joined Forest on a season-long loan in the summer after Graham Potter’s predecessor, Julen Lopetegui, told him he was not part of his plans for the Hammers’ season.
But West Ham were always keen on adding a central midfielder to their squad this month if a deal was affordable, and Forest have agreed to cancel his loan and allow him to return to the London Stadium after he made just five Premier League starts for them.

Club A statement from the family of Ronnie Boyce 18 hours ago It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United shares the following statement on behalf the family of legendary Hammer Ronnie Boyce:
“We are so very sad to confirm that our beloved husband, father and grandfather Ronnie passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon.”
“He fought illness in recent years with typical courage, bravery and no fuss, and with such strength. His nickname of ‘Ticker’, as the strong heartbeat of West Ham’s team in the 1960s, could not have been more appropriate.
“He was a Hammer all of his life, from growing up in East Ham to representing the Club as a player and coach across 34 years of dedicated service, and always had time for the fans and people who gave him so much support throughout his time in football.
“He never boasted about his wonderful playing career or achievements, but he was so proud of the fact that he scored the winning goal in West Ham United’s first-ever FA Cup victory, and his love of the Club and the supporters meant so much to him.
“As a family, we were even prouder of the love, support and dedication he gave us all, and of the quiet, honest, decent man that he was. We will miss him greatly and he will never be forgotten.”
The thoughts and condolences of everyone at West Ham United are with Ronnie’s wife Dawn, his sons Gary and Tony, daughter-in-laws Ewa and Sarah, grandsons Ross, Ben, Jack, Elliott and Tom, and all of his family and friends at this sad and difficult time.
Further tributes to Ronnie will appear across Club channels in the coming days and at London Stadium on Saturday ahead of our Premier League fixture against Brentford.

The Kalvin Phillips deal with David Moyes was one of the worst loan signings. I’m thinking that Potter is ****g took his mental this season with the Irish lad Ferguson 60m wouldn’t give 60 spuds for him

Got to try and get some quality players with genuine pace in. Potter needs time, played decent football when he was the Brighton boss.He inherited this team.

Hopefully he now has a good idea of who he wants to keep. I'd be shipping out plenty, Paqueta and Kudus for starters to get some cash in. Then get the rebuild started.

If Potter stays he's got to be judged next season.Probably get some of the players he wants in.What I see of Brighton when he was in charge, thought they played some good football.Quite a few will be gone when the season ends I'd imagine.
