Exactly. We all know how this ends.

The problem is who on earth would take on such a shambles of a squad?

And having p!ssed all the money away how are we ever to rebuild?

It's not like everyone wants to play for us anymore!
Report duffy August 25, 2024 12:35 PM BST
Wat we were supposed to get under this new crew was joined up thinking, we've had the exact opposite, they wanted ETH out, went behind his back interviewing all and sundry before bottling it after the Cup Final.

You would have thought at that point that they would have though, "right we're stuck with him for a little while longer now but at least we can put a stop to this ridiculous system of bringing in all these, mainly dutch players that have played previously for Ten Haag", but no, they doubled down on their mistake and allowed it to continue. I really don't get that.

One other thing, I wouldn't get too carried away with Amad, he's just too small and really looks it, that moment in the second half where he took too long to play the ball across, I visibly winced when the opponent came across and smacked him off the ball.

Really could not afford to lose to Brighton as it puts us very much in a similar scenario to a couple of seasons ago, going into the third game against Liverpool desperate for a win.

genuine questions what are peoples opinions now on Luke Shaw?

IMHO he should have been binned years ago yet still I see people defending him (I actually don't think he's good enough as a player for Utd). Jose Mourinho called him out long ago and was spot on. He is over weight and no one seems to link the lack of professionalism with his constant injury issues.

Southgate should have been sacked at the Euros the minute he named the team for the final and he was in it. I said after the match he would be injured for the start of the season and he has not let me down....

If they sign Sterling it only confirms Utd are in serious trouble. Historically despite what that clown Gary Neville says, Man City used sign plenty of older Man Utd who had been decent but were castoffs at that stage (Schmeichel, Cole, Kidd, Kanchelskis, Hargreaves etc...)

This will signal a watershed moment where the tables turn and Utd sign a past it City cast off (Which Chelsea had already done)

Awful signing which event the Glaziers wouldn't consider.

Would need to be done as two separate deals to work..and can't see agreement on price differential being worked out..

Sterling at his age and with few clubs able to pay wages would be worth about 20-25m (3 year contract) - still a very debateable buy..but in the context of shifting a player that clearly won't play under ETH you could just about make a case for..

Sancho has plenty of interest from Europe but Chelsea the only interested party that can afford wages - by getting Raheem off their books Chelsea could cover them..but Sanchez market value is more 30-35m still after decent stint @ Dortmund and only 24 years old..

feels unlikely..

The Chilwell link would be more worrying though bar a loan feels unlikely as well..very decent player but quite high wages and same injury baggage as Shaw..

Transfer window was reasonable, as always will be judged on how the new players perform. De Ligt for Varane, Mazraoui for Wan Bissaka, Ugarte for McTominay and Zirkzee for Martial seems ok in terms of age and wage reduction. We've also got Yoro when fit but lost Amrabat (was on loan) and Sancho (another big earner).

Would have preferred a bigger overhaul with a couple of other older players gone, but we have sold other fringe players and it's not easy to change 8, 9, 10 players in one window. Overall I still feel were light by at least 1 midfielder, would have liked a left back too.

Its the utter uselessness of their new owner Jim ratcliffe. This is the guy who tried to buy Chelsea and is now portrayed as Man Utds saviour. He has basically ensure the Glaziers are embedded in the club for even longer.

The sanctioning of yet more ETH ex players to be signed in the summer only confirms Ratcliffes team haven't an iota. He was a disaster at Nice and he is on his way to making a total mess at Utd.

From the outside looking in...

The big issue is only really the manager now. The bosses took an eternity to give him a vote of confidence in the summer and it looked like that was due to the lack of alternatives with Southgate's name being derided by the fans before he was seriously considered.

Utd have had a decent window. Still a bit of the old school with the Dutch boss bringing in a couple of defenders he knows. But the young injured defender and the new midfielder look smarter buys even if they appear to be overpriced and a bit limited. But the new transfer committee idea is always going to take a couple of windows to get properly into gear. I'd say though that Utd needed at least one more midfielder. The new guy should slot in alongside Mainoo and crucially allow the young lad to play further upfield where he's less of a liability, but you only need one of them to get injured or banned and you're back to Casemiro or Eriksen. The lack of quality in the midfield is really stark and needs a major rebuild.
Report SirNorbertClarke September 1, 2024 8:39 PM BST
I don't accept that it takes 2 or 3 windows to get a transfer committee going.

Everyone on the committee should have a list of players they like.

United have looked better pre season when in possession, out of possesion is arguably going to be an even bigger problem this season, especially paradoxically if we are better with the ball and more confident because it means we will be countered on more often, the big hole in midfield will still be there.

The Fulham game will be fascinating because it will be similar to the Wolves opener last year, neat and tidy side with good ball players who can hurt you on the break.

The Caseniro problem is only going to get worse and plenty will be scratching their heads in the weeks to come at how the collective saviours that have been amassed in the boardroom to stop this type of thing from happening, have allowed it to happen.

McTominay is a decent player who was constantly asked to play in a 2 man midfield with no support from the full backs or wingers. (Ie thrown to the Wolves). Does it not say something that someone like Antonio Conte wanted him.

Out of all the clowns at that circus, hes the one player whose attitude you couldn't criticise. I would have happily taken him at Newcastle for 25m. He would have done far better at Utd under Ferguson. He was unlucky he only began gettinga. good run towards the end of Mourinhos time. He would have done well under him too. Instead he was left with Ole and that Dutch clown they currently have.

Last year he got 7 goals despite not being first choice whilst the beloved Bruno and Marcus stank the place up.

I know I'll be in the minority here, I thought a pretty even game for the first half hour, both teams had opportunities running at the opposition in a 3 Vs 3 or 4 Vs 4.

Liverpool were ruthless/clinical (including the early disallowed goal) with their opportunities in contrast to the 2 games at Old Trafford last season, both of which they should have won.

From the first goal until 60 mins they were totally dominant but less clinical. Do Utd then go all out for goals and risk a 5, 6, 7 nil or try to close it down and accept defeat? People would criticise either approach.

For years (and even right now) fans have been asking for 'a reset', 'a mass clearout', 'rip up the squad' etc etc. This window has probably been the closest to starting that process in terms of signing younger players and no panic buys. Players bought perhaps to perform in 2-3 years, not 2-3 weeks.

There's way more that could be said but basically, you can't give the ball away and make individual errors like we did today and v Brighton without getting punished. And for all his faults, that's not something the manager can stop the players doing once they're on the pitch.

Casemiro is another great player who has been treated even worse than McTominay. At times last year, the total incompetent Ten Hag expected him to play as a sole central midfielder and basically physically ran him into the ground.

That Dutch clown destroys and drops players who start out well and then keeps playing sulkers like Rashford.

All the Utd fans piling on Casemiro for the 2nd goal. He lost the ball on the halfway line and they waltzed through the Utd defence.

The first goal, he gives the ball away and Utd have 2 defenders back...same for the 3rd.

Putting on a kid like Collyer in place of a player with Casemiros history (humiliating him) shows Ten Hag is utterly out of his depth and cannot manager big players. He needs to go back to bullying kids at Go Ahead Eagles....

the second turnover the numbers were such that Utd shouldn't have conceded but there was some quality to the way L'pool punished the mistakes today (Mainoo a poor uncharacteristic mistake for the 3rd) and yet another new back 4 the communication of which was far from optimal...Martinez and De Ligt between them should have avoided a free strike for the second..

the sheer amount of individual errors is an alarming recurring theme..Martinez mistake (I think it was)  should have been the 4th..

There's not much more can be said about the performance, it was horrendous with the usual suspects again garbage,
Onana, Casemiro, Bruno (big game) and Rashford .
Throw in Mainoo and Zirkee and it's over half the team.

Ten hag again looked clueless and apparently went full on jose defending himself in the post match presser.

But yet again one man had a big influence on proceedings that kind of went un noticed.
Step up Anthony Taylor.
Every time we touched them he blew up yet two of the goals had fouls in the build up that he waved on play for.
You could say our players needed to be stronger but they were the sort of fouls he was giving the other way.

I've said it many times on here referees don't need to give big controversial decisions to influence games,  just letting small fouls go on one side , penalising them for the other, a few soft yellows in defence or central midfield and bingo your neutering the ball winners.

If anyone can be bothered watch the game back and ask at every decision could that have gone the other way and you'll find the numbers stacking up on one side.

It's too late for ten hag but the higher ups should be highlighting this to help the new man compete on a level playing field.
Report olddesperado September 2, 2024 8:10 AM BST
And in a months time everyone will be wondering how we spent so much money on a **** Ugarte ( maybe he is I know nothing about him) but absolutely no player can be a one man midfield in the PL.

Just not possible,  Bruno has no discipline or defensive awareness,  Mainoo is tasked with getting up and back throughout the 90 resulting in him gassed by 60 mins and Casemiro left in his own to defend the full space in our own half as the full backs are in the opposite half everytime we give the ball away which is quiet often when you have players like Bruno Rashford and Garnacho on the field.

It's an absolute horror set up that leaves just about everyone to fail unless they pull off a moment.

‘Fully backing him’: Manchester United throw support behind Erik ten Hag

Ashworth clear on stance before Liverpool defeat
Berrada ‘convinced we’re going to be successful’

Erik ten Hag has received public backing from the two most senior Manchester United executives hired by Ineos this summer, as questions swirl again regarding the manager’s Old Trafford future.

United confirmed in June that Ten Hag would be retained after they considered several other candidates, but the team have three points from their first three games after losing against Brighton and Liverpool in consecutive matches.

The club’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, and the sporting director, Dan Ashworth, have thrown support behind Ten Hag. Berrada was asked before the 3-0 home defeat against Liverpool on Sunday whether the Dutchman would retain United’s backing should the club have a run of defeats. He replied: “Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we’re fully backing him.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos-led search this summer for a possible successor to Ten Hag was headed by the technical director, Jason Wilcox, because Ashworth was not yet in position. Berrada was also not at United when Ten Hag extended his contract by a year until 2026.

Berrada said: “In terms of the contract, that was a decision that was taken prior to both of our arrivals. But we’re very happy with that decision. Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together, as Dan said before, in this [summer] transfer window. We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results.”

Ashworth, asked whether he was comfortable – as the sporting director – with having had no say in Ten Hag being retained, referenced previous jobs. “It happened at Newcastle with Eddie Howe, it happened at West Brom – Tony Mowbray was in place,” he said. “Very rarely do you go into a job as a sporting director and there’s no manager in place.”

Ashworth was pressed on whether he had genuinely had no input regarding Ten Hag’s future given his own success depends primarily on the first-team’s performance. “I didn’t start until 1 July, so none whatsoever,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks.

“I see my job is to support him in every way I possibly can, and whether that’s operationally, whether that’s with recruitment, whether that’s with medical, whether that’s with psychology, whether that’s training‑ground flow, it’s just to take as much of that off him to allow him to fully focus on the training pitch and the match tactical plan to deliver success for Manchester United.”

Some fans booed Ten Hag or the players at Old Trafford on Sunday. Berrada cited excitement regarding United’s future. “I’m very optimistic at what we have in front of us. We’re starting to put the right pieces in place and I’m absolutely convinced we’re going to be successful.”

He refused to state how long it may take to make United consistent challengers again. “It’s almost impossible to put a timescale to answer that question,” Berrarda said.

“We don’t want to just win one Premier League and then be satisfied. We want to create a team that is capable of competing for the Champions League, for the Premier League and for the domestic cups on a consistent basis.”

Of those signed by Ten Hag in his five transfer windows Antony, Lisandro Martínez, André Onana, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui had worked previously with the manager. This has caused scrutiny regarding whether Ten Hag is considering a wide pool of players.

Ashworth said: “It is natural in human nature to work with somebody you’ve worked with previously – in all business contexts. Because you know that player. But also we’ve signed a number this summer that haven’t worked with Erik previously: [Leny] Yoro; [Manuel] Ugarte; he’d never worked with [Joshua] Zirkzee. He’s worked with Matthijs and Nous previously – they were both on our radar. It’s a joined‑up decision.”

Jadon Sancho moved to Chelsea on loan for the season with an obligation to buy for £20m-£25m. Ashworth stated the winger was not forced out. “We’re not in a position where we’re kicking players out of the club,” he said.

This was despite united having a year left with option to extend to 2026, which the club exercised, presumably in return for either a reduced salary or pay off.
Now they look like nothing has changed and nobody has any faith in ETH after 3 games. There was no need to back him, he had time left on his contract and wasn't in demand.

The most worrying thing for united fans is that the new signings seem just as awful and aren't a great fit for what united need.

1.20 top 10. I might lay that

‘Fully backing him’: Manchester United throw support behind Erik ten HagAshworth clear on stance before Liverpool defeatBerrada ‘convinced we’re going to be successful’Erik ten Hag has received public backing from the two most senior Manchester United executives hired by Ineos this summer, as questions swirl again regarding the manager’s Old Trafford future.United confirmed in June that Ten Hag would be retained after they considered several other candidates, but the team have three points from their first three games after losing against Brighton and Liverpool in consecutive matches. Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we’re fully backing him.”Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos-led search this summer for a possible successor to Ten Hag was headed by the technical director, Jason Wilcox, because Ashworth was not yet in position. Berrada was also not at United when Ten Hag extended his contract by a year until 2026.Berrada said: “In terms of the contract, that was a decision that was taken prior to both of our arrivals. But we’re very happy with that decision. Erik has our full backing and we have worked very closely together, as Dan said before, in this [summer] transfer window. We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results.”Ashworth, asked whether he was comfortable – as the sporting director – with having had no say in Ten Hag being retained, referenced previous jobs. “It happened at Newcastle with Eddie Howe, it happened at West Brom – Tony Mowbray was in place,” he said. “Very rarely do you go into a job as a sporting director and there’s no manager in place.”Ashworth was pressed on whether he had genuinely had no input regarding Ten Hag’s future given his own success depends primarily on the first-team’s performance. “I didn’t start until 1 July, so none whatsoever,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks.“I see my job is to support him in every way I possibly can, and whether that’s operationally, whether that’s with recruitment, whether that’s with medical, whether that’s with psychology, whether that’s training‑ground flow, it’s just to take as much of that off him to allow him to fully focus on the training pitch and the match tactical plan to deliver success for Manchester United.”Some fans booed Ten Hag or the players at Old Trafford on Sunday. Berrada cited excitement regarding United’s future. “I’m very optimistic at what we have in front of us. We’re starting to put the right pieces in place and I’m absolutely convinced we’re going to be successful.”He refused to state how long it may take to make United consistent challengers again. “It’s almost impossible to put a timescale to answer that question,” Berrarda said.“We don’t want to just win one Premier League and then be satisfied. We want to create a team that is capable of competing for the Champions League, for the Premier League and for the domestic cups on a consistent basis.”Of those signed by Ten Hag in his five transfer windows Antony, Lisandro Martínez, André Onana, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui had worked previously with the manager. This has caused scrutiny regarding whether Ten Hag is considering a wide pool of players.Ashworth said: “It is natural in human nature to work with somebody you’ve worked with previously – in all business contexts. It’s a joined‑up decision.”Jadon Sancho moved to Chelsea on loan for the season with an obligation to buy for £20m-£25m. Ashworth stated the winger was not forced out. “We’re not in a position where we’re kicking players out of the club,” he said.**** me we are doomed

Wow everyone at the club is deluded!

Name one other EPL club who would take Antony or Onana for even half of what Utd paid for them.....

Antony would struggle at the paralympics. Onana would struggle in League 2 ffs He plays like a guy who won a competition on the back of a cereal box.

I'd say Jason Wilcox is raging at that article.

The funniest is when you see Luke Shaw being interviewed. He responds as if he doesn't play or is even a member of the club. Its like he has disassociated himself from the trauma of playing for Utd Laugh

Its always someone elses fault from Lukes point of view. Jose had him to a tee. a fat bluffer who pulls a hernia sticking a curry in the microwave.

LMFAO. One of the all time great managers ffs

The most worrying thing for united fans is that the new signings seem just as awful and aren't a great fit for what united need.

Ugarte - not played...would feel on known strengths to be exactly what they need..whether he turns out to be good enough we'll see.
Yoro - not started a competitive game and viewed by a number of clubs as one of the most promising young centre halves in Europe
De Ligt - started one game....not sure how we base a realistic assessment on that.
Zirzee - started one game and viewed as a versatile attacking player (probably bench option when everyone available) had no proper pre-season.
Mazroui - a back up modest value RB (emergency LB) looked ok in first two games..everyone struggled at the weekend..again a squad player in theory.

regarding the comments from Ashworth/Berrada which the ones quoted were before the L'pool defeat - not sure what you expect them to say..they are hardly going to say no we don't think he's the right man and don't see any future in working with him ffs..Crazy
it's the usual media statement bulls*** right up there with the old 'full backing of the board' just before sacking someone on the Monday..

If as suggested in the summer they(Ratcliffe/Brailsford) do want Southgate it's a far easier transition with him now fully available and potential for Ten Hag to become very sackable if results don't pick up quickly than it would have been at the end of the season...and they still have Tuchel option....the pay off is not likely to be significantly different to what it was in the summer.

I see my favourite player is at it again.

A journalist called Pete Hall who has connections to Marcus and his agency has written a puff piece building him up and throwing his manager and team mates under the bus.

A nauseating piece questioning why he's getting so much criticism from the media and former players.

"If someone misplaces a pass it's glossed over but if it's Marcus it's discussed for days" etc etc.

Coming off his best season he was moved to the left to facilitate over a hundred million in new centre forward signings and became a provider rather than scorer.
If those chances aren't being converted it's hardly his fault etc etc.

The manager is not getting the best out of players and no one has prolonged periods of good form under him etc etc.

It's a horrid piece and Rashford would do himself a favour by condemning it.

I actually think he's one of the biggest problems currently at the club and not just on the pitch.

Pogba, Lingard,Williams and Sancho were all seen as toxic to team moral.

They all have one common denominator in that they were at one stage or another Marcus's best friend at the club.

Ten hag hasn't got the credit in the bank or the strength any more to pick a fight with someone as powerful as Rashford but Inios should go above his head on this one.

He needs removing from the team and preferably the club.

Neither Southgate or Potter will ever be United manager IMO.

ETH does seem intent on testing the patience of the board though, no Garnacho or Ugarte and Rashford of course keeps his place along with Eriksen???????????
Report the_don September 14, 2024 12:25 PM BST
Midfield looks as robust and mobile as my local Under 11s side, what could go wrong??

Probably playing Eriksen thinking we will dominate possession although knowing how Southampton like to play that is a doubt.

Can partly understand the South American players not starting but surely better to play them here and then rest in the midweek Carabao Cup match?

Don't think Rashford has been as poor as some have made out so far this season - he put 2 on a plate for Zirkzee v Liverpool. But people are so focussed on goals and assists stats now rather than overall play. He looks short on confidence and conviction but needs to remedy that himself.
Report SirNorbertClarke September 14, 2024 8:36 PM BST
I am amazed Rashford has no confidence.

Maybe he needs another Rolls-Royce.
