That's right Brentford. The payments on those players are a huge part of the problem.      The debt doesn't help, but clearing it wouldn't be transformative these days.  In the early Glazer years, the debt payments were over half of the club's entire revenue, which was why we had very little money for transfers in Fergie's later years, despite him working miracles.  However, the Glazers were able to refinance at very low levels, and while the interest payments are creeping up, we're still only paying around £38m a year to service the debt. It's unfortunately the ridiculous overpayments on players that are really killing us, and making it impossible to spend anything.     Lurka may be right, and there's nothing we can do to clear those.  In that case, we're stuffed for the foreseeable future, and probably would be even had Qatar bought the club.  (Qatar might have had some good options in the event of the verdict in City's case a week ago leading to the destruction of the existing system of funding.)
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 24, 2025 6:08 PM GMT
Debt needs to be refinanced by 2028,so input of cash
to clear that would surely be beneficial to club.

There's also a lot of debt to come, potentially, from hp
payments on players.
Report HonkyJoe February 24, 2025 6:19 PM GMT
They'll probably find somebody to refinance it for them, though, albeit at a higher price. It's certainly not the thing that's holding us back currently.
Report elise February 24, 2025 6:24 PM GMT
the glazer model is fine if the on pitch success continues, the revenues are huge but once they stop winning the wheels come off because aside from the money via ch lge / prem lge their ability to draw big sponsors and new fans diminishes, folks who are fickle don't support a losing team they switch to another and new fans go with success, they need a winning team to hold things together off the pitch
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 24, 2025 6:30 PM GMT
Yep refinancing is not a problem, except it'll be at higher rate

But paying it off, and taking interest payments off balance sheet
would be massive boost.

The club is losing around £100m a year. The general squad is so low in work rate, technical skill and footballing intelligence that it struggles to match all but a few of the teams in the PL. Our position in the table isn't a mirage, and there's no reason to think that this current bunch can get back to competing at the top end any time soon. However, we're nowhere even close to profitability, let alone being in a position where we can find £75-£100m of profit that can be spun into a big rebuild.

I'm not saying that paying down the debt wouldn't be desirable, but I do hear a lot of people suggesting that the Glazer debt is the thing that holds us back. It'll cost around £550m to clear, and will save us about £37-£38m a year for now. Moderately helpful, but we would still have been racking up big losses, even with that debt cleared.  The real problem is the decade of bad transfer decisions that continues to drag us down - and the weight of which is getting heavier and heavier, and making it harder to fix the problems.
Report comingupthehill February 24, 2025 7:20 PM GMT

being prepared to put it in week in week out to finish 6th or 7th

Not just man utd have the problem, but motivating players

I hope its owner will approach Salah and say "name your price". Man Utd have wasted mega bucks in the past few seasons on managers and players. Just buy well-proven and reliable goal-scoring players eg Salah and Haaland - one season wonders are too hit and miss.

How can Real Madrid attract players like Mbappe, Bellingham and many others? Even Man City and Liverpool cannot compete in this area; Man Utd are passed over and shunned.
Report comingupthehill February 24, 2025 8:23 PM GMT
Sir nobby, debt isn’t good if the company is privately owned, fine if listed.
The debt impacts on the value of your asset.

Think at the time, the 3 hedge funds were happy,a never ending loan suits everyone, the asset grows,so the loan is shrinking in comparison.

Any money lenders would be happy to borrow you it,zero chance of default, given a million fans to fund it.plus sky high sky to rights guaranteed.

The debt is irrelevant unless it impacts on team decisions.theyspent big with the debt,re spent big this summer.its the personal guiding that spending that’s the issue.

The manager can’t buy players cos they re scared of him getting back handlers,so they let sporting directors buy the players,it’s 3 times removed from the people paying, who don’t care cos they live in USA.

So you buy the worst player possible, that you can justify the reason why you bought him, making sure all the layers of agents involved get their cut for making the deal happen.

Smaller clubs, with on hands owners can flourish.forest Brighton the big clubs will struggle going forward.

United are listed on the LSE and NYSE. Any listed company is privately owned in reality, only a small % of shares are ever sold publicly, usually less than 10%.

The Glazers aren't just costing United in interest payments on their debt, they have also been taking regular annual dividends of about £20m a year (Utd are the only club in the PL to pay dividends, they didn't pay any in 2023). Last year they sold shares to Radcliffe for about $1.6bn in total and incurred costs of about £34m for that transaction on their end. United paid that for them. The interest is expected to increase to 50m a year when they have to refinance the debt in a few years as the rates will be higher.
Report HonkyJoe February 24, 2025 9:03 PM GMT
Against bigger teams, I think we're still capable of putting in a good defensive performance and then hitting them on the break. Under Amorim, there's more cohesion to the attacking unit, and we don't leave those huge holes in the midfield that every big team was able to exploit during the Ten Hag era.

However, against the well-drilled teams in the middle of the PL, we're just not equipped to compete properly. Most of our centre-backs are very defensive and passive in nature, and without Martinez we don't have anyone who can send attacking balls from the back. That lack of threat allows the other team to allocate more players to the midfield, and outnumber us there. Whoever's in the centre of the midfield gets swamped, and we don't have a strong forward who can hold the ball up - Rasmus should be that player, but his technical skills are far too limited.

Consequently, our only threat generally comes from the wings. Dorgu's making a difference, and if he and Garnacho can start working together then we might get some joy through that. But until we've got an aggressive wing-back and a winger working in tandem on both sides of the field, it'll be too easy for well-organised sides to surround Dorgu and Garnacho and snuff out many of their attacks. That then leads to the opposition suddenly attacking us in big numbers, since their midfield outnumbers ours, and we get caught out by stupid goals again and again.

In short, we've got a team that can compete well against the bigger teams - in games where it's nevertheless hard to get three points. But we often don't have the weaponry to get the upperhand over the bread and butter in the middle of the table. It's not a good combination if you're needing at least Europa League in order to have a chance of balancing the books.

I think it’s so empowering that players won’t be held ransom and sack their agents if they’re not preforming.

Onana must be a shrewd guy, clearly he can read a situation, like wether to stay on your line of come out to clear it.

Or keep your agent or get a new one.
How did he know the new agent would secure the deal,it’s like he can see into the future or maybe thought his 6 year agent who he seemed happy with, couldn’t get his deal.

Maybe someone at Utd told him,ten Haag was his manger at Ajax,so the old agent must of been ok.

The Radcliffe delusion.

New stadium..
They will struggle together 50k in the old stadium, the way things are going.

A lot of season ticket holders, are renewed by people who don’t go,or are dead.they are stopping this.

My best guess would be.

4-8 people use a season ticket each season,it’s shared around family members, mates.

At face value price,

This keeps fans involved in the club.but because they are demanding full I.d. Checks,a lot are giving them up.

People were happy paying for ticket, cos they knew if they can’t go,someone else would.
This is now over.

I reckon 20k are affected by this,

There’s no way they’d fill a new stadium, would struggle to fill this one.

Long term, this will damage future generations of going.

Ratcliffe has literally done nothing to move the club forward.he believes he’s saving a failing business.but united wasn’t failing off the pitch,he’s just ripped it to shreads.

The 3k that go away to Europe, most of them don’t go to home games, they let family friends go.then a lot of the away league games, same again, they pick and choose when to go.

His 100k stadium is just more revenue driven, has is his cost cutting.but you eventually run out of customers.

It won’t be built,I think he thought the gov might fund part of it has they regeneration Trafford park, but they ve said they’re not doing it.

So he’s cut Christmas parties, layed  off a couple of cleaners, then wants to borrow a billion to build an identical stadium in the car park of the existing stadium.
Which is still seen as one of the best stadiums in England anyway.

He could put a 3rd tier on the main stand ,and increase capacity.

Most clubs who build new stadiums,do it because they ve got to.
There’s no business sense to do it.

It won’t happen.has when he sees the figures ,it won’t add up.think it’s just a diversion.

At least the glaziers just said nothing and milked the club, this guy is a bull shotter,

There’s no accurate figures for anything.

So it’s a best guess,vibe,word of mouth.

This 25 year waiting list is not updated each year,5k might be dead,5 k might now have a ticket,a lot might not now want one.its just a list of desirability,at the time they put their name on the list.

The 3k euro always,most will have a season ticket,but don’t go,let family and friends go,cos it’s a boring day out to a home game,they don’t bother,and just go away.

You land back in Manchester on a Friday night after 3 days in Russia,so can’t be arsed going to Fulham at home on prime at 8pm Sunday night.

70% who buy a season ticket, used to do so,knowing, they ll get 30/40 quid of mates on the crap games, just go to the big ones.plus no one wants to give it up,so buy it as security ,with little intention of going.

Now they are demanding full I.D,no swaps etc,it will make a lot just give it up.
This then means 5-10 other people also don’t go.so the club is losing loyal fans.invested in the club.

The reason 20/25% of the crowd,go down on the concourse at 3.30,then stay there,is because ,they cant sit with mates, etc.

They could maybe swallow the price hike, but not if they can’t let their mates go if they can’t.

It’s a downward spiral of losing customers, but initial might get away with it,but longer term wont

25 year wait

Imagine joining the list after the treble season and you can get a ticket next season.
Report brentford April 26, 2025 11:52 PM BST
Was a lot shorter wait in 1999 ironically..

If people aren't making proper use of season tickets I'm not too bothered if they lose them..there's plenty that will use them as intended..though I maintain I just think that's largely untrue... Utd haven't exactly been clocking up massive Euro miles in the last 2 seasons...and half of the away trips are followed by away Prem games anyway that are incredibly difficult to get and massively over subscribed..

If season ticket sales did genuinely drop significantly it would make it a lot easier to attend games with mates as you could just book 3's and 4's with a membership a lot easier than currently..

Putting up OAP's and youngsters (non season ticket) is poor but typical of the modern game - not just Utd and general price hikes the same..but with recent inflationary pressure absolutely inevitable ..don't like or approve it but it's hardly unique..

at the end of the day they'll price to what they think they can sell and always did to some extent. Up to people vote with their choices (not just at Utd).

Mines gone up from 106 to 180 a month for 2. (coming off a deal)

Not many given ticket up, and still no sign of new season tickets being issued.

Yep, if you enjoy it then you find the money and that's it.

Clubs do not want season tickets and will increasingly attempt to phase them out, they want to be able to sell them to tourists at over inflated prices, if season tickets ended tomorrow the stadium would be full the next game and the gate receipts would greatly increase.

We were greatly flattered last night, for the first 20 minutes we were shambolic and kept giving the ball away under the high press, if that continued it would have been a very tough night, the game swung in a 15 minute period with the goal against the run of play and then the pen and Bruno's very well taken goal.

That said I thought that they would cause us problems in the second half as they went sh1t or bust but we handled the occasion brilliantly in the and completely snuffed them out.

Next season,if you miss 4 games ,they will take your season ticket off you,

Unless you give it back to the club for that game, which their stan flashman department(oldies will know this).will re sell the ticket, like vinted, but at a lot extra .
Effectively  ,jimmy ,ill buy  or sell Ratcliffe, never misses an opportunity to milk the fans,

Think the logic is,they want you there,so you might spend .

Still can’t understand the logic of not letting family and friends using the ticket,as they might spend more if it’s a one off treat going.but maybe jimmy best seats, thinks you’re making money on the side.

Obviously, united want ,80k corporate tickets, but they won’t get that and will run out of new customers,so it’s a death spiral.

Jim ,would be a great business manager,in any other field than football, stripping everything down to max out ,profit and waste great.

Then they sell mctomminey for 20 mill,to buy onana for 60 mill and the logic goes out the window.

Given his penny pinching there’s no way a new ground is cost effective.
