Someone old or someone motivated by a big payout

Chelsea did it with Hiddink a couple of times

Big Sam would be perfect ticking both boxes

Could go further down the legend route with Keane Bruce Ince or Hughes

David Hytner and Jamie Jackson Sun 21 Nov 2021 10.40 GMT - Charity shop managers across the South East have pleaded with Manchester united fans not to leave anymore unwanted team shirts outside their shops in the coming days. One store manager in Ealing arrived this morning to find so many discarded United shirts in the entrance that it took them twenty minutes to get the doors open. Peter Froggett of Mencap stated that despite signs saying they didn't need United football shirts they'd had hundreds left outside their shops in and around London. He went on to say they'd now have to put cameras on the entrance and would consider prosecution against those dumping United shirts for fly tipping. Ends

Stating that an interim will be appointed surely means nobody who is available now is fancied. That rules out Zidane and Rodgers who would be there tomorrow if we paid out good money to Leicester. I'm happy with that as I don't think either are suitable.

Still don't understand Solskjaer's backroom staff remaining unless it is just to get through this week only. No idea who this interim coach will be but I'm sure plenty would do it until May for a decent wedge. If there's someone lined up for after that (Pochettino, ten Hag etc) then everything from now needs to be lined up towards them.

Both would be poor appointments. Poch is over rated. Simply couldn't get the job done at Spurs. Couldn't even beat Leicester to win the PL ffs

Ten Hag is Ajax school like Van Gaal. Why repeat a previous mistake?

They need a german coach with a proper DOF to improve recruitment.
Report lurka November 22, 2021 1:51 AM GMT
Ten Hag learned under Pep at Bayern. He had no association with Ajax before he got the job. Van Gaal was  was only really successful working with young players because they would obey his instructions to the letter. More established players wouldn't do that for him at Barca and Bayern and he fell out with a lot of them and used young players instead. By the time Mourinho and van Gaal were at United they were well past their sell-by dates tactically and couldn't compete with the likes of Pep and Klopp. You hear Gary Neville say that they tried top managers in Mourinho and van Gaal but that is nonsense, they weren't at the top of their game then. United could have gone for Klopp and Pep and might have got them if they really wanted them. They've missed out on Tuchel and now Conte too. If United had gone for any of them they'd all have found it very hard to say no.

Ten Hag might have the same problem with established players as van Gaal but his ideas are much fresher than Mourinho or van Gaal's. They need a top manager with fresh ideas. Older managers aren't able to compete with the tactics of the younger top coaches of today. Ten Hag would be a decent appointment but there's probably nobody out there who could compete with Pep, Klopp and Tuchel over a 38 game league season. Apart from Zidane, there's prob no manager available or attainable who has a modern style and experience managing a top CL club. Experience nowadays likely means your ideas are outdated.

I'm not sure anyone can make PSG work. Tuchel couldn't turn them into the #1 side, and yet he seems to be doing pretty well at his latest club.

Too many superstars who know the board will back them over the 'manager'. I appreciate that there's an aspect of that at our club as well, but I imagine RR will get plenty of support from the people upstairs. Pogba might be an issue, but I suspect the club has resigned itself to him leaving in any case, so that's likely one issue done and dusted. Whether or not you think Ronaldo will be a problem probably comes down to whether you think he's still producing it at the top level. (Personally, I'm in the Pro-Ronaldo camp. As long as we treat him primarily as a goal scorer, he's still right at the top. Get the rest of the team humming, and we won't have many problems with Ronaldo!)

Another big problem for PSG is that the players are in a total arse-end of a league. If they can be bothered to play a bit, they'll likely scoop three points. That's not much motivation to be busting a gut week in and week out. When they play 90 minutes against a team who are used to putting in a shift most games most weeks, it tends to find them out.

Luke Shaw deserves to be (and should have been) dropped on his current form. But I hope RR looks at how good he was over the course of last year. If he can rediscover that form then he needs to be included. I've seen RR's comments on him, and I know they were from last year. However, it could be that RR might moderate his views somewhat if he looks back over last season.

Report HonkyJoe November 25, 2021 9:26 PM GMT
Good question Porcupine. One thing you could say about that is that Van Gaal's preferred playing style was already dead in the grave by the time he took over at our place. In contrast, many of RR's tactics are the same ones being used to great effect by most of today's best English and German sides. But yes, it could be that he'll look to play version 1.0 of his game when other managers have developed and crafted version 2.0, version 3.0 etc.

My concern would be that he hasn't been in charge of many (or indeed any) big clubs. Can he convince the players to buy into his philosophy?  And if he's so good, why hasn't he been snapped up by (at the very least) Bayern, or one of the top English, Spanish, or Italian clubs?

He seems interesting though, so I'll look forwards to seeing whether he can make anything of us. I've always felt we needed a Klopp to make us play at high intensity. Can he be the one???
Report lurka November 25, 2021 9:53 PM GMT
Rangnick is the right type of appointment but more as a DoF than a manager. Despite influencing Klopp and Tuchel, I don't think he's ever been on their level and has been more of a DoF than a manager over the last 10 years. He's a bit old for a job as big as United.

But if he's staying on that will be a good thing as the next manager will likely have a similar style and Pogba will likely be got rid of which is very important for United. Not good news for Ronaldo and he might be a problem for any manager playing high-press but he won't be around too much longer. The likes of Sancho and Bruno should flourish under him. Prob Greenwood and Rashford too.

Not totally sure how this is going to work with Rangnick. Manager/coach until end of season and then what? He's previously said (and shown) that anywhere he goes he needs to have control and influence over several aspects of a club and I just can't see that happening at Utd - the Glazers like their 'yes men'. He's obviously been given some guarantees as to what happens after May but it's all a bit vague really.

On the pitch, his approach is a big contrast to how we've played and the type of players we have. So can't see his methods having time to take effect too quickly. If there's a transition being put in place in May for a younger coach to continue his work then that's fine by me, but will Rangnick have a say in who that is? From what I've heard, with this guy you have to either fully commit to his methods or not bother with him at all.

Van der Vaart the ex Spurs player now a pundit talking about Maguire.  It's pretty much exactly what I've been saying since we signed him and have pointed it out on here many times.

Recently, he branded Manchester United defender Harry Maguire "really s***" and says he's still completely stunned by the Englishman's £80 million price-tag.  "Where did [Man United] look for him? You'll find players like him at any amateur club in Holland," van der Vaart said.  "I think it is unbelievable. He is no top-class defender - and he demonstrates this every week. If you go out and sign players like him, I can understand why you end up having financial problems."

Van der Vaart should probably stick to reading diet plans...

41 England caps suggests you are unlikely to find an equivalent in the Dutch amateur game...

I'm a United fan obviously so want him to do well of course for my team but you watch the matches, he's been awful hasn't he making mistake after mistake?  I've pointed out many times he's just a tall, good header of the ball but anyone who can go at him will leave him for dead as he's no speed whatsoever.  I don't know who the Brentford CH's are but surely there just as good as Maguire aren't they yet he's the Captain of Manchester United Football Club?
