Carrick taking over is another slap in the face to us fans.

This is the man that oversees all the coaching and sits blankly beside ole in the dugout every week.

If he had any nuggets of advice to impart you would imagine he would have done it before now.

We are well and truly fecked.

It's a mess but of they're only doing thnks to waiting until all their targets had finally gotten jobs before getting rid.

They must know that they can get Poch in the summer and therefore it's just easier to muddle through with whoever is already there (although Carrick getting it before the tea lady is a surprise) rather than to go outside and find an interim which would be messy.

Of course what we don't want is history to repeat itself, however unlikely it may be that sees Uited go on a run because as sure as eggs are eggs, there will be plenty singing give him the obLaughLaughLaughCrazyCrazyScared

Stating that an interim will be appointed surely means nobody who is available now is fancied. That rules out Zidane and Rodgers who would be there tomorrow if we paid out good money to Leicester. I'm happy with that as I don't think either are suitable.

Still don't understand Solskjaer's backroom staff remaining unless it is just to get through this week only. No idea who this interim coach will be but I'm sure plenty would do it until May for a decent wedge. If there's someone lined up for after that (Pochettino, ten Hag etc) then everything from now needs to be lined up towards them.

Poch would be a disaster.

Ten hag be better if they are serious

Both would be poor appointments. Poch is over rated. Simply couldn't get the job done at Spurs. Couldn't even beat Leicester to win the PL ffs

Ten Hag is Ajax school like Van Gaal. Why repeat a previous mistake?

They need a german coach with a proper DOF to improve recruitment.
Report lurka November 22, 2021 1:51 AM GMT
Ten Hag learned under Pep at Bayern. He had no association with Ajax before he got the job. Van Gaal was  was only really successful working with young players because they would obey his instructions to the letter. More established players wouldn't do that for him at Barca and Bayern and he fell out with a lot of them and used young players instead. By the time Mourinho and van Gaal were at United they were well past their sell-by dates tactically and couldn't compete with the likes of Pep and Klopp. You hear Gary Neville say that they tried top managers in Mourinho and van Gaal but that is nonsense, they weren't at the top of their game then. United could have gone for Klopp and Pep and might have got them if they really wanted them. They've missed out on Tuchel and now Conte too. If United had gone for any of them they'd all have found it very hard to say no.

Ten Hag might have the same problem with established players as van Gaal but his ideas are much fresher than Mourinho or van Gaal's. They need a top manager with fresh ideas. Older managers aren't able to compete with the tactics of the younger top coaches of today. Ten Hag would be a decent appointment but there's probably nobody out there who could compete with Pep, Klopp and Tuchel over a 38 game league season. Apart from Zidane, there's prob no manager available or attainable who has a modern style and experience managing a top CL club. Experience nowadays likely means your ideas are outdated.

Poch teams are high press high energy, so little he can do with PSG's squad and why i think he'll be gone before the KO stages. They have never played like they respect him as a manager and no improvement since he took over.

I'm not sure anyone can make PSG work. Tuchel couldn't turn them into the #1 side, and yet he seems to be doing pretty well at his latest club.

Too many superstars who know the board will back them over the 'manager'. I appreciate that there's an aspect of that at our club as well, but I imagine RR will get plenty of support from the people upstairs. Pogba might be an issue, but I suspect the club has resigned itself to him leaving in any case, so that's likely one issue done and dusted. Whether or not you think Ronaldo will be a problem probably comes down to whether you think he's still producing it at the top level. (Personally, I'm in the Pro-Ronaldo camp. As long as we treat him primarily as a goal scorer, he's still right at the top. Get the rest of the team humming, and we won't have many problems with Ronaldo!)

Another big problem for PSG is that the players are in a total arse-end of a league. If they can be bothered to play a bit, they'll likely scoop three points. That's not much motivation to be busting a gut week in and week out. When they play 90 minutes against a team who are used to putting in a shift most games most weeks, it tends to find them out.

Luke Shaw deserves to be (and should have been) dropped on his current form. But I hope RR looks at how good he was over the course of last year. If he can rediscover that form then he needs to be included. I've seen RR's comments on him, and I know they were from last year. However, it could be that RR might moderate his views somewhat if he looks back over last season.

Report HonkyJoe November 25, 2021 9:26 PM GMT
Good question Porcupine. One thing you could say about that is that Van Gaal's preferred playing style was already dead in the grave by the time he took over at our place. In contrast, many of RR's tactics are the same ones being used to great effect by most of today's best English and German sides. But yes, it could be that he'll look to play version 1.0 of his game when other managers have developed and crafted version 2.0, version 3.0 etc.

My concern would be that he hasn't been in charge of many (or indeed any) big clubs. Can he convince the players to buy into his philosophy?  And if he's so good, why hasn't he been snapped up by (at the very least) Bayern, or one of the top English, Spanish, or Italian clubs?

He seems interesting though, so I'll look forwards to seeing whether he can make anything of us. I've always felt we needed a Klopp to make us play at high intensity. Can he be the one???
Report lurka November 25, 2021 9:53 PM GMT
Rangnick is the right type of appointment but more as a DoF than a manager. Despite influencing Klopp and Tuchel, I don't think he's ever been on their level and has been more of a DoF than a manager over the last 10 years. He's a bit old for a job as big as United.

But if he's staying on that will be a good thing as the next manager will likely have a similar style and Pogba will likely be got rid of which is very important for United. Not good news for Ronaldo and he might be a problem for any manager playing high-press but he won't be around too much longer. The likes of Sancho and Bruno should flourish under him. Prob Greenwood and Rashford too.

Not totally sure how this is going to work with Rangnick. Manager/coach until end of season and then what? He's previously said (and shown) that anywhere he goes he needs to have control and influence over several aspects of a club and I just can't see that happening at Utd - the Glazers like their 'yes men'. He's obviously been given some guarantees as to what happens after May but it's all a bit vague really.

On the pitch, his approach is a big contrast to how we've played and the type of players we have. So can't see his methods having time to take effect too quickly. If there's a transition being put in place in May for a younger coach to continue his work then that's fine by me, but will Rangnick have a say in who that is? From what I've heard, with this guy you have to either fully commit to his methods or not bother with him at all.

You have to judge it relative to the opponent and Chelsea are top notch right now.

If we had faced this Chelsea side in the guise we've been most recently we would have been ripped apart with big open spaces all over the shop. I said that we lacked quality when we did have a chance to attack but we'll worry about that in due course, the first job was to to be compact, organized and committed, all things that should be a given, but for us, haven't been, today they were.

Chelsea had to beat us today if they wanted the points, it wasn't going to be handed to them, they couldn't do it and for their part, the substandard strike force in crucial moments will catch them out, they can't rely on midfielders and wing backs to keep scoring all their goals.

Played 2 decent teams away from home this week so a win and a draw not too bad. Not much else to say other than that really - not great performances - I actually think Fred has been the best player which says it all about the approach really. If it is Rangnick coming in I think he will play a lot.

Yes I agree two not great performances whatsoever yet somehow they've got away with them.

Funny with Fred, he gets stuck in and breaks things up but on the ball he's rubbish.  Look at that attempt at a chip today, by all means just miss it too high or too low but he just basically played it straight back to the keeper.  Awful.

The difference today was that although Utd knew they were the inferior team, they didnt just hand the game over on a silver plate.
