Sven Botman will make his first Premier League start since January as Newcastle United take on Chelsea at St. James' Park (kick-off 12 noon)

The Dutch defender underwent surgery on a knee problem in March but, having made appearances from the bench in each of the Magpies' last two games, comes into the starting XI to face the Blues.

Anthony Gordon is also in from the start, with Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock coming out of the team which drew at Brighton last weekend. Trippier misses out with a calf injury while Willock has a knee complaint, although both are minor.

Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles is named among the substitutes. It's his first time in a matchday squad since he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against West Ham in March 2024.

Lascelles scored in this fixture last season, as Newcastle ran out 4-1 winners in November 2023. Gordon and Alexander Isak were also on target that day, alongside Joelinton who misses out through injury. The Magpies have won both of their home Premier League matches against Chelsea under Eddie Howe, and also beat the Blues on Tyneside in the Carabao Cup in October.

The two teams go into the match level on points, but with United in fourth and Chelsea a place below due to Howe's side scoring more goals.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Alexander Isak, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, Bruno Guimarães

Substitutes: Martin Dúbravka, John Ruddy, Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth, William Osula, Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley, Sean Neave

Callum Wilson will start for Newcastle United in Sunday's crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium (kick-off 4:30pm BST).

Wilson will make just his second league start of the campaign in place of leading goalscorer Alexander Isak, who misses out with a minor groin injury, as the Magpies bid to make sure of Champions League qualification.

That enforced change is the only alteration made by head coach Eddie Howe following last weekend's win over Chelsea at St. James' Park, with former Gunner Joe Willock back on the bench following injury.

Nick Pope is in goal, with Tino Livramento, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman and Dan Burn all lining up at the back.

Sandro Tonali anchors the midfield alongside captain Bruno Guimarães, with Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes looking to supply Wilson in attack.

Two goalkeepers - Martin Dúbravka and John Ruddy - are again named on the bench, along with Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles.

Willock is back among the substitutes, with Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley also named, with Will Osula and Sean Neave the attacking reinforcements.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope, Tino Livramento, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães, Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, Callum Wilson.

Magpies fans attending our final Premier League clash of the season, versus Everton on Sunday, are being offered two free drinks at St. James’ Park ahead of kick-off.

An initial free pint offer organised around the penultimate home fixture against Chelsea earlier this month was met with a roaring response, and we have ‘doubled down’ to once again thank fans for their support in traditional Newcastle United style.

The gesture will allow fans to raise a glass to a memorable season which has seen us lift domestic silverware for the first time in 70 years, while also ensuring that St. James’ Park is in full voice as the team battle to secure a UEFA Champions League return.

Supporters are encouraged to arrive early and soak up the atmosphere, with turnstiles opening at 2pm, ahead of the 4pm kick-off. Two complimentary drinks tokens will be offered to those passing through turnstiles between 2-3pm, remaining valid until 3:30pm.

Tokens can be redeemed for a free draught or bottled beer / cider (subject to location) or a bottled soft drink. The offer is available across the concourse, Platinum Club and Bar 1892, with separate arrangements in place for guests attending hospitality suites.

Newcastle United’s CEO Darren Eales commented: “We’re pleased to once again raise a glass - or two - to supporters this weekend as we bring the curtain down on a season that will be fondly remembered in Newcastle United history.

“Our fans always play their part and the atmosphere at St. James’ Park is simply unrivalled. We encourage everyone to arrive early, take advantage of the drinks offer and back the team until the very final whistle of the season.”

Free drink offer details:

Two tokens per person can be collected when passing through turnstiles between 2-3pm
Vouchers may only be redeemed before 3.30pm on matchday (25 May)
Alcoholic drinks can only be claimed by individuals aged 18+

The new home kit will be available from 9:00am on Thursday 29 May at the club's official online shop and all official club retail stores; St. James’ Park, Metro Centre and Fenwick Newcastle.

To support the club’s community efforts, Newcastle United will donate £5* from every adult home, away, third, and goalkeeper shirt sold via official channels before the end of August to the Newcastle United Foundation. The funds will directly benefit grassroots and social impact initiatives across the North East.

This season’s shirt draws inspiration from a classic northern motif – the shepherd’s check – blending it seamlessly with our historic vertical stripes to create something fresh, and undeniably Newcastle.

Black shorts and socks complete the kit, featuring the iconic adidas three-stripes and a clean white NUFC finish. A full-colour club crest sits proudly on the chest, with ‘Howay the Lads’ on the back of the neck – a call to arms that means everything in the stands, the streets, and on the pitch.

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has extended his contract by an additional year, keeping him at St. James' Park until summer 2027.

The England international has enjoyed an outstanding campaign for the Magpies, playing a crucial role as Eddie Howe's side delivered the club's first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

Dan, the opening goalscorer and Player of the Match in the historic Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool, has featured 45 times in all competitions this season, missing just one Premier League fixture.

The 33-year-old's form was recognised by new England manager Thomas Tuchel in March, with Dan handed his international debut as he completed the full 90 minutes in a World Cup qualifier against Albania.

Dan said: "I'm delighted to sign a new deal here. I knew that I was going into my last year and I really wanted to get my future tied down. I've said before that I would love to finish my career here so to be given that opportunity, I'm very grateful.

"I still feel like I'm getting better and I don't feel that I've hit the top of the hill yet. It'll be tough to top this season but hopefully we can do that over the next couple of years. It's a dream come true to be playing for this club and I'm delighted that I get to keep doing it."

Newcastle United head coach, Eddie Howe, added: "Dan has had an incredible season. He has been a key part of our most memorable moments and has rightly been rewarded with senior international football.

"He is a leader who epitomises the attitude and commitment we want, and I'm delighted he'll be staying with us for even longer."

Paul Mitchell, the club's sporting director, said: "This is an acknowledgement of Dan's continued importance to the team.

"He makes an exceptional contribution to the club on and off the pitch, and it's very pleasing to see his efforts rewarded with a wonderful season for club and country and an extended contract."

Well deserved as well he has earned it this season

Alexander Isak will lead the line for Newcastle United ahead of this afternoon's final Premier League fixture of the 2024/25 season against Everton at St. James' Park (kick-off 4pm BST).

Eddie Howe's side require a victory against the Toffees to secure UEFA Champions League qualification and the Isak, who missed last week's 1-0 defeat away at Arsenal due to a minor groin injury, returns to the starting XI and is the sole change from the away clash against the Gunners.

Nick Pope, aiming for a fourth consecutive league clean sheet on home soil, continues in-between the sticks while Dan Burn, who extended his contract with his boyhood club until the summer of 2027 on Saturday, will partner Fabian Schär and Sven Botman at the heart of the Magpies' defence.

Jacob Murphy and Tino Livramento are set to occupy the defensive wing-back roles.

Bruno Guimarães, who made his United debut against the Toffees during the 2021/22 campaign, captains the hosts and will be situated in the middle of the park alongside Sandro Tonali.

Anthony Gordon, who joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023, will make his 150th Premier League appearance today while Harvey Barnes is in line for his 200th English top-flight outing, with the wingers aiming to provide attacking support for Isak, who has scored 23 Premier League goals so far this term.

Kieran Trippier is back among the substitutes after missing Newcastle's respective fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal while Callum Wilson, who has scored four goals in his last five games against Everton, and William Osula are also named on the bench.

Midfield trio Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley are options Howe could deploy from the bench while Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles, aiming to play his first competitive game of football since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March 2024, are the defensive reinforcements.

Martin Dúbravka is the substitute goalkeeper.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Alexander Isak, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, Bruno Guimarães (c).

Substitutes: Martin Dúbravka, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth, William Osula, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley.

Well lets get the negatives out of the way first Sad Everton certainly done a job on us today and deserved their win; little arms was their player of the match. On the plus side Man Utd done us a favour and beat Villa. Seasons are not defined by one game so over the season games teams get what they deserve (Sheffield United might not be thinking that Laugh). If you said at the start of the season that we would win a trophy and qualify for the champions league; many Newcastle fans would be happy with that so all in all got to be happy Grin. On to next season; the rigours of champions league football mean that we need a very active transfer window as we have a paper thin squad; personally I think another 4 or 5 bodies will do it. Exciting times ahead Excited

Plenty of "38 games not one game" quotes. But Newcastle lost around a third of their games. They won over half of them, so that brings its rewards. But elite teams do not lose 12 matches in a season. An unusual criterion for qualifying has provided the sticking plaster for what we would otherwise be looking at as a big let down the morning after.
Lets invest and fix the problems that everyone can see.

Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United’s Sporting Director, will leave the club by mutual consent at the end of June 2025.

Paul joined the club in July 2024, reuniting him with Magpies CEO Darren Eales, who had previously recruited Paul to Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Due to health reasons, Darren will be stepping down as CEO in the near future.

During Paul’s tenure as Sporting Director, the club won its first major domestic trophy in 70 years by lifting the Carabao Cup in March 2025 and has secured Champions League football for the 2025/26 campaign.

Paul Mitchell said: "I'd like to thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year, including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible people.

"I'm leaving at a time that is right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales - someone who I have worked so closely with in my career - moving on soon.

"The club is in great hands on and off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building.

"I'd like to wish everyone connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future."

Paul leaves with the club’s best wishes and the Board would like to express its sincere thanks to him for his professionalism and diligent service.

St. James' Park is set to host a spectacular weekend of football as we welcome both Atlético Madrid's men's and women's teams for the third edition of the Sela Cup - and tickets are available from just £25.

Taking place on Saturday 9th August, fans can enjoy a double-header featuring two of the most respected clubs in European football, with one ticket granting access to both matches.

The action kicks off at 1pm BST with Becky Langley's side facing Atlético Madrid Femenino, a team that finished third in Liga F last season behind giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, and reached the Copa de la Reina final.

At 4pm BST, the men's team take centre stage in their final pre-season fixture against Diego Simeone's powerhouse Atlético side - a club fresh from securing third place in La Liga. It's a clash worthy of the grandest stages - and a potential Champions League preview.

With the support of Newcastle United's main partner, Sela, the Sela Cup returns for its third consecutive year - and once again, it brings world-class competition to St. James' Park. Having already welcomed the likes of Fiorentina, Villarreal, Girona, and AC Milan Women, the tournament's reputation continues to soar. This summer, the arrival of Atlético Madrid's elite men's and women's teams sets the stage for what promises to be the most electrifying edition yet.

St. James' Park is always special, but those games in the summer - seeing all the black and white shirts in the stands - are so unique. It will give the players an extra boost at a crucial time in our preparations.

'AN IDEAL TEST'

"Playing in the Sela Cup in front of our own supporters is something we really look forward to," Eddie Howe told newcastleunited.com.

"St. James' Park is always special, but those games in the summer - seeing all the black and white shirts in the stands - are so unique. It will give the players an extra boost at a crucial time in our preparations.

"Pre-season is all about being ready, both domestically in the Premier League and for the Champions League, so playing a team of Atlético's calibre is an ideal test.

"They are an extremely talented side, managed by one of the best coaches in the world.

"We will have faced top quality opposition from both English and European football over the summer and it will stand us in good stead."

'INCREDIBLE SUPPORT EVERY TIME'

Ahead of the visit of Atlético Madrid Femenino, Becky Langley said: "We're really excited to be taking part in the Sela Cup again this year. It has become a big date to look out for in the pre-season schedule.

"Like AC Milan last season, Atlético are a huge name with exceptional players so it's a big test but one we're motivated for.

"We have another big season ahead of us in WSL 2. Matches like this will give us the physical test and type of experience we’ll need to be ready for it.

"Every time we have played at St. James' Park, we have received incredible support and we know it will be the same again in front of our outstanding fans."

A SPECTACULAR EXPERIENCE

We would like to thank our primary front-of-shirt partner, Sela, for making the Sela Cup possible.

Ibrahim Mohtaseb, Chief International Business Officer at Sela, added: "We're excited to welcome one of the biggest teams in Europe to St. James' Park this summer.

"Ahead of Newcastle United's arrival back in the Champions League this will be a challenging test for both sides and an entertaining watch for fans.

"Now into our third year of partnership with Newcastle United, we're proud that the Sela Cup continues to provide a spectacular matchday experience for all."

Newcastle United will sign promising Spanish winger Antonio Cordero on 1st July following the expiry of his contract with Spanish side Málaga.

The transfer is subject to completion of the registration process with the Premier League and the Football Association, as well as obtaining a UK visa.

The 18-year-old - known as Antoñito - has made 60 senior appearances in all competitions for Sergio Pellicer's Málaga, registering seven goals and nine assists.

The Spain Under-19 international is expected to head out on loan this summer after completing his move to St. James' Park.

Antonio said: "It's truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure. I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it.

"It's a big step, and that's one of the reasons I'm here. I'm happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already."

Newcastle United sporting director, Paul Mitchell, said: "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe.

"He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences."

Born in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Antonio had youth spells with clubs including Cádiz, Sevilla, Real Betis and Malaga before signing his first professional deal with the latter in 2022.

He scored his first senior goal for Málaga in dramatic circumstances in June 2024, netting a last-minute equaliser in a play-off final second leg against Gimnàstic to seal promotion to the Segunda División.

Newcastle United can announce its retained list of men's first team players for the 2025/26 season.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy are set to be out of contract at the end of June, however the club has opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed.

Jamal Lewis will depart St. James’ Park upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

Meanwhile, Lloyd Kelly’s loan move to Juventus will become a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee on 30th June.

All other first team players are retained, with an option activated to retain goalkeeper Mark Gillespie following recent contract extensions for Fabian Schär, Emil Krafth and Dan Burn.

The club has also published its retained list for Newcastle United Women and will publish for Newcastle United Academy in due course at newcastleunited.com.

Newcastle United extends a sincere thank you to all players leaving the club this summer and wishes them the best for the next step in their careers.

CALLUM WILSON

Callum joined the Magpies from AFC Bournemouth in 2020 and has scored 49 times in 130 appearances.

Combative, exceptional at leading the line and lethal in the box, he scored on his debut and continued to net vital goals to propel the club back into elite European football.

His 18 goals in 36 appearances were crucial as United achieved a fourth-placed finish during a memorable 2022/23 season, culminating in qualification for the UEFA Champions League and a first domestic cup final for 24 years.

He was rewarded with international recognition, including representing England at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He made 22 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign, again contributing to Champions League qualification, and he was on the pitch as the club secured its first domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the Carabao Cup in March 2025.

JOHN RUDDY

An experienced and influential member of the club’s goalkeeping unit, John joined the Magpies in July 2024 after leaving Birmingham City.

A former England international, he made his debut for the club during a pre-season victory over Girona and was named in the first team squad for competitive matches on 11 occasions.

LLOYD KELLY

Lloyd arrived at St. James’ Park on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth in July 2024 before making 14 appearances in all competitions.

He joined Italian Serie A side Juventus on loan in February 2025.

JAMAL LEWIS

Jamal joined Newcastle United from Norwich City in summer 2020 and made 36 competitive appearances for the club – including 26 in his first season. The Northern Ireland international spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Watford before making six appearances on loan at Brazilian Serie A side São Paulo last season.

Newcastle United’s Academy will bid farewell to six players this summer when their contracts come to an end.

Jay Turner-Cooke and Ellis Stanton, who both featured in friendlies for the first team, are among those set for release.

Turner-Cooke joined Newcastle from Sunderland in January 2021 and made his first senior appearance for the Magpies against Al-Hilal in December 2022 before scoring during a 3-2 pre-season victory against Gateshead the following summer, netting the winning strike at the Gateshead International Stadium.

Midfielder Stanton, meanwhile, broke into the Magpies' under-21 squad during the latter stages of the 2021/22 campaign before appearing against the A-League All Stars in May 2024.

Also departing at Under-21s level are James Huntley, Josh Donaldson and Harry and Rory Powell.

Huntley was named on the bench of a senior matchday squad for the first time during Newcastle's UEFA Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain in November 2023.

Donaldson, who joined the club in 2019, scored on his under-21s debut during a Premier League Cup clash against Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium before netting twice in 17 appearances in the 2024/25 season.

Rory Powell who, like twin brother Harry, joined Newcastle’s youth set-up after playing for Red House Farm and Gateshead FC Juniors, scored in Newcastle’s 7-2 victory against Leyton Orient in an FA Youth Cup third round clash in December 2023 before going on to make his under-21s bow against Sunderland in March 2024.

Academy Director, Steve Harper, said: "I want to extend my gratitude to all the players who are moving on from the Academy. Their commitment and growth - both as footballers and individuals - reflect the dedication they have shown throughout their time representing Newcastle United.

"They have been a credit to themselves, their families and to the club and they should be immensely proud of everything they’ve achieved.

"Our support doesn’t stop here. The Academy remains a resource for them as they take the next steps in their careers, and I look forward to seeing where their journeys take them. On behalf of everyone here, we wish them every success for the future."

With the exception of Arsenal away your final seven fixtures look very attractive.  On paper of course because who know what teams will raise their game this season coming?  The first three the opposite and a real hot opening to anyone’s season.  Then there is Europe and all the demands these matches will bring.
Any squad improvements coming do you think?

We're excited to announce that we'll be welcoming La Liga side RCD Espanyol to St. James' Park on Friday, 8th August for our first pre-season fixture on home soil.

As we prepare for the demands of both domestic and Champions League football, it's vital that we get the full squad up to speed. That's why we've added this extra friendly - we want Eddie Howe's team fighting fit for our opening Premier League clash against Aston Villa, before we host last season's champions Liverpool at St. James' Park the following weekend.

This additional fixture also gives more fans the chance to see the team in action before the 2025/26 season kicks off.

Espanyol, who are celebrating their 125th anniversary, will be another fitting opponent as we continue our preparations for a much-anticipated return to European football.

The Friday night match sets the tone for a brilliant weekend of football, with both our men's and women's teams facing Atlético Madrid in the Sela Cup the following day.

Kick-off against Espanyol is at 7:30pm (BST) on Friday, 8th August, and tickets start at just £20 for adults and £10 for concessions.

We can't wait to see you back at St. James' Park as we gear up for another unforgettable season.

Tickets will be released on general sale at 10am on Tuesday, 24th June via book.newcastleunited.com.

'AN ACTION-PACKED PRE-SEASON'

Our pre-season journey kicks off with a trip to face Celtic in Glasgow on 19th July, before heading to Asia on an international tour.

The team will take on Arsenal in the Singapore Festival of Football on 27th July, followed by two fixtures in South Korea - Team K League on 30th July and Tottenham Hotspur on 3rd August - as part of the 2025 Coupang Play Series.

St. James' Park will welcome the squad home for the clash against Espanyol on 8th August, setting the scene for the Sela Cup the following day, where our men's and women's teams will face counterparts from Atlético Madrid in a thrilling double header.

Teenage trio Joe Brayson, Luke Craggs and Logan Watts have all put pen to paper on their first professional contracts with Newcastle United.

All boyhood supporters of the Magpies, Brayson, Craggs and Watts have agreed full-time deals after progressing through the club’s Little Benton Academy.

Brayson, who joined Newcastle’s youth set-up in 2015, is a striker who enjoyed a goal-laden campaign last term after scoring 14 times, finishing as the top goalscorer at under-18 level in the process.

The Walker-born youngster recorded ten goals and six assists in 19 Under-18 Premier League fixtures last term along with scoring three times in the Premier League 2 for the Magpies' Under-21s side.

The 18-year-old forward's positive performances have resulted in a maiden pro deal, following in the footsteps of his father Paul, who also began his career at Newcastle United before featuring for the likes of Reading, Cardiff City and Cheltenham Town.

Joe Brayson pro deal image
Brayson told newcastleunited.com: "My dad has played a massive part because he's went through the same journey as me so to follow in his footsteps is unbelievable and I'm buzzing.

“Signing a professional contract is what I've been working for and it's a good step forward.

"I think I did quite well last season, getting a lot of goal contributions. I was pleased to get a lot of assists, too, and I was involved with the under-21s which is what I wanted to do.

"It's good getting pushed up the age groups and then being able to score goals for them was great. Hopefully, I can do the same next season."

Craggs is a defender who won the club's 2024/25 Scholar of the Year award, which recognises one scholar from each Premier League club who has excelled across all aspects of the programme, both on and off the pitch, serving as a role model to their peers through a positive, professional attitude and application.

The Gateshead-born teenager said: "I was buzzing to even get my scholarship so to be nominated as the best in the club's group for how I am as a person, both on and off the pitch, means a lot.

"I really appreciated all the staff who nominated myself as I was proud of the fact that they valued me as a person and how I applied myself in the education side of the scholarship.

Luke Craggs pro deal image
“It's a proud moment because I've been a Newcastle fan ever since I was born so it's great to get a contract because that's what I've been working towards, but especially to get it at Newcastle. That's the big part of it as I've followed them since I was little.

"It hasn't hit me yet but it'll be something that I will look back on when I'm older with pride that I've played for Newcastle as a pro."

Watts, who joined the Magpies' youth set-up in 2018, is a defender capable of playing as a full-back or centre-back who made his full debut at under-21 level during a 4-1 win against Stoke City in February.

The 18-year-old, who hails from North Shields, is relishing the prospect of competing in the UEFA Youth League with his hometown club.

The teenager said: "I missed out on it a couple of years ago but I made sure to train harder so I'm hoping to be a part of it this time. Playing against teams you won't be usually face will be a good test for everyone.

Logan Watts pro deal image
"I was over the moon (to sign a first professional contract) because, ever since I joined the club at under-12 level, that's what I've been aiming for.

"Once I got a scholarship, I was pushing for that pro contract and then when I signed it, I was delighted.

"I'll be trying to get as many starts for the under-21s as I can. It's a completely different level moving from under-18 to under-21s, with a faster pace and a lot louder on the pitch so I'm excited for all of that."

Message from Callum Wilson

Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.

The Magpies will now welcome reigning champions Liverpool to St. James' Park on Monday, 25th August - two days later than originally planned. That game will kick-off at 8pm BST and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

And the trip to newly-promoted Leeds will still take place on Saturday, 30th August as initially set, but will now kick-off at 5:30pm BST instead of 3pm BST. That clash at Elland Road will also be shown live on Sky Sports.

Any further changes to United's 2025/26 schedule will be communicated at the earliest opportunity.

Newcastle United can announce the appointment of Martin Mark as first team set-piece coach.

Martin joins the Magpies from FC Midtjylland in his native Denmark, where he spent three-and-a-half years in a similar role.

The 31-year-old implemented an innovative set-piece strategy that has yielded impressive results under head coach Thomas Thomasberg.

FC Midtjylland won the 2023/24 Danish Superliga title and finished top of the regular season table once again in 2024/25, with 27 of their 64 league goals scored from set pieces during the most recent campaign.

The Danish side also reached the UEFA Europa League knock-out stages last season.

Martin, who also previously coached FC Midtjylland and Aalborg BK at youth level, will now link up with Eddie Howe and his coaching team in time for the Magpies’ first pre-season friendly away to Celtic on Saturday 19th July.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest on a long-term deal.

Anthony joins the Magpies after playing a starring role in Forest's impressive 2024/25 Premier League campaign, scoring six goals and adding 11 assists to secure European qualification.

The 23-year-old, a Swedish international team-mate of Alexander Isak, arrived at the City Ground in summer 2023 and has gone on to surpass 100 Premier League appearances.

Prior to making his move to the Midlands, Anthony came through the youth system at Manchester United, making his competitive debut and scoring his first Premier League goal in May 2021.

He has also established himself as a regular part of the Sweden squad, with four goals in 22 senior appearances after working his way through the international age groups. His most recent appearance for his country came in their 2-0 victory over Hungary last month, in which he played the full 90 minutes.

Newcastle United Head Coach, Eddie Howe, said: "I'm delighted to welcome Anthony to Newcastle United. He has been a key target for us so I'm delighted to secure him at this early part of pre-season.

"He is an exciting talent with attributes that make him a unique attacking threat. His pace, energy and ability to create and score goals will strengthen us and complement the way we want to play.

"Anthony is hungry to develop even further with us and to achieve success here, and we’re all looking forward to working with him."

Anthony said: "I'm excited, I'm really happy but most importantly I'm ready. I'm ready to put on this black and white top to really fight for this team and give everything for the passionate fanbase that lives and breathes football.

"I had an amazing two years at Nottingham Forest, they really helped me to become the player I am today, but I'm really happy to be here now. The club won a trophy last season and are building something unique, something special that I really want to be part of.

"I really want to buy into the culture, into the DNA of this club. I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started."

Anthony's squad number will be determined during pre-season.

Goals from Sean Longstaff, Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Ben Parkinson helped Newcastle United kick off their 2025/26 pre-season campaign with a behind-closed-doors victory over Carlisle United.

The Cumbrians, managed by Mark Hughes, visited the Magpies' Training Centre for the friendly, which allowed Eddie Howe's side to step up their preparations for the season ahead after they returned to training earlier in the week.

Both teams fielded different XIs in each half and Longstaff - who had been denied by Gabriel Breeze early on - opened the scoring midway through the first period with a spectacular, swerving long-range strike.

With new signing Anthony Elanga watching his new team-mates hours after his move from Nottingham Forest was completed on Friday night, Nick Pope kept out an Elliot Embleton free kick before Joe Willock fired wide after a strong burst into the box.

You can buy your Official Pre-Season Match Pass at https://nufctv.newcastleunited.com/home

In the opening exchanges of the second half, a neat move saw Jacob Murphy play in Harvey Barnes, but his shot was kept out by Harry Lewis.

Then the same two players combined, with Murphy's teasing cross from the right headed wide by Barnes.

But Joelinton scored the hosts' second of the afternoon when he won possession from a reaction press high up the pitch, then slotted home.

And Murphy made it three, rounding the goalkeeper and a couple of defenders following Barnes' cutback.

Young forward Parkinson rounded off the scoring when he impressively flicked on to Barnes, who switched play to Murphy, with Parkinson improvising to backheel the ensuing cross into the net.

It made for an encouraging start to pre-season for the Magpies, whose next test sees them take on Celtic in seven days' time.

Newcastle United (first half): Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, William Osula, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Alex Murphy, Lewis Miley, Trevan Sanusi, Leo Shahar, Sean Neave

Newcastle United (second half): John Ruddy, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär, Joelinton, Harvey Barnes, Matt Targett, Jacob Murphy, Joe White, Harrison Ashby, Ben Parkinson, Travis Hernes

Newcastle United are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former centre-forward Wyn Davies at the age of 83.

Born in Caernarfon, Davies enjoyed goal-laden stints at Wrexham and Bolton Wanderers in the early stages of his footballing career before joining Newcastle United in 1966.

Known affectionately as 'Wyn the Leap' and 'The Mighty Wyn' due to his aerial prowess, the Welshman spent five years at St. James' Park, scoring 53 goals in 216 appearances for the Magpies whilst wearing the famous nine shirt, and was part of the United team which won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 under Joe Harvey's management.

Davies then enjoyed spells at Manchester City, Manchester United and Blackpool during the 1970s before finishing his career with Bangor City in 1979 as well as gaining 34 senior international caps for Wales, scoring six times.

The club's thoughts are with Wyn's family and friends at this difficult time.

I'm absolutely gutted at this news Sad Wyn was my first hero at Newcastle and even at the age of 3 or 4; I wasn't that bothered of the result of the match; all I wanted to know is; did Wyn the leap score. RIP

Midfielder Sean Longstaff has completed a permanent move to Leeds United for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old, who was born in North Shields and joined the Academy aged nine, departs St. James' Park with 214 appearances and 16 goals to his name.

Sean progressed through the club's youth system, via productive loan spells at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, before making his senior Magpies debut in August 2018 away to Nottingham Forest.

His first Premier League outing followed later that season, coming on as a second-half substitute against Liverpool at Anfield, and he soon became a mainstay in the team under Rafa Benítez.

Sean's first top-flight goal came in February 2019's home victory over Burnley, but it is his strikes in the cup competitions for which his time at the club will be best remembered.

His semi-final brace against Southampton clinched a place in 2023 Carabao Cup final and later that year he was on target in the unforgettable 4-1 UEFA Champions League defeat of Paris Saint-Germain.

Sean cemented his place in Newcastle United history as part of last season's Carabao Cup-winning squad, with his decisive penalty in the shoot-out victory over Forest setting the Magpies on the road to Wembley and the club's first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

He also made a notable impact off the pitch, regularly supporting the local community through his work as a Newcastle United Foundation ambassador.

Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Sean for his outstanding contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

William Osula will lead the line in Newcastle United's pre-season friendly against Celtic FC on Saturday afternoon, with new arrival Anthony Elanga named on the bench.

Following their pre-season camp in Austria, Eddie Howe's side take on last season's Scottish Premiership champions in the first meeting between the two sides at Celtic Park since 2004, competing for the first-ever adidas Trophy whilst being backed by 10,000 travelling away supporters.

Nick Pope, who kept nine competitive clean sheets last term, starts in-between the sticks behind a four man defence, with Fabian Schär and Sven Botman situated in central defence while Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett, the latter gaining his first United start since February, occupy the defensive flanks.

Bruno Guimarães captains the visitors alongside Lewis Miley and Joe Willock in the middle of the park while Jacob Murphy, celebrating eight years today since joining his boyhood club from Norwich City, and Harvey Barnes will aim to provide attacking support for Osula.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton do not feature in today's matchday squad, with the pair both having their minutes managed, but Howe has a number of experienced options to deploy from the bench, including new signing Elanga, who arrived from Nottingham Forest last week, as well as Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn.

Jamaal Lascelles will be aiming to make his first senior outing for the Magpies since March 2024 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while defensive trio Emil Krafth, Harrison Ashby and Alex Murphy are also named on the bench.

Sean Neave, who was named on the bench for United's Carabao Cup final victory against Liverpool in March, will be targeting a first-team debut for his boyhood club this afternoon while Joe White, Travis Hernes and Anthony Munda, all products of the Magpies' Academy, will be seeking more valuable minutes at senior level.

Martin Dúbravka and John Ruddy are the substitute goalkeepers.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman, Matt Targett, Bruno Guimarães (c), Lewis Miley, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, William Osula.

Substitutes: Martin Dúbravka, John Ruddy, Jamaal Lascelles, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Anthony Elanga, Emil Krafth, Harrison Ashby, Dan Burn, Alex Murphy, Joe White, Travis Hernes, Anthony Munda, Sean Neave.
