Its a relatively simple concept they have more points than the team in third

Because at Utd expectations are always high, and 1st is expected, thus anything below best is a crisis whereas at Liverpool they see 4th as a success so if they look like achieving it their fans are raving about how they are playing.

And why not? Top four puts a team into Europe doesn't it?

It all boils down to the respective Club Owners ambitions and expectations not the fans. hth

Someone has to be 2nd. Man City's reserve 11 would be running them close.

Report REDUNDANT PUNTER December 27, 2017 4:18 PM GMT
It's not about ambition or expectation they are second because they've managed to  win enough games first half of season

Second half now approaching they need to do the same otherwise they will end up fifth

If you look at recent form its not difficult to see that UTD staying 2nd is unlikely.
Maybe the January window will change things, but as it stands it looks like Chelsea and Liverpool will overtake them, they are certainly playing better and have been for a while now, hence the gap getting smaller.
Spurs seem to have woken from a slumber so no surprise if they don't as well.

What form exactly?

Liverpool drew 3 of their last 6.

Chelsea lost to West Ham about 10 days ago.

Utd's "form" is weighted towards having played City who destroyed all the top teams anyway.

It will be City 1st, Utd/Chelsea in some combo of 2nd/3rd, Liverpool/Tottenham 4th.

Report mafeking December 28, 2017 4:09 AM GMT
not sure how you can be sure of that although it's a likely scenario. little to choose between the 4 teams behind city with arsenal clearly the worst

strange that united have mainly lost to some absolutely shocking teams - huddersfield, basel, bristol city and almost burnley who spurs might have beat 6 a few days before
Report buddeliea December 28, 2017 7:46 AM GMT
The form that sees them both playing better than UTD and closing the gap.
I expect that to continue.
Report n88uk December 28, 2017 1:32 PM GMT
But it's taken out of context. It's weighted towards Utd having played the hardest fixture list in those games, in some cases significantly harder.

Liverpool were 1 point better off over the last 6 games despite this, that continued over the season still sees them finish behind Utd. When you take into account Liverpool's fixtures were much easier than Utd, there form is actually probably worse than Utd vs point expectation.
Report n88uk December 28, 2017 1:32 PM GMT
*their form
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER December 28, 2017 1:36 PM GMT
Everyone plays everyone united have over performed in first half of season imo if they can keep it up then they could finish top four
Report n88uk December 28, 2017 1:43 PM GMT
Yer, but they don't when you're in recent form? Hence why 20 games where everyone played everyone roughly once is going to be a better indicator than last 6 where you can just be like Chelsea and have played nobody in the last 6.
Report buddeliea December 28, 2017 5:23 PM GMT
Ok,i shall put it this way.
For some time now, much more than six games,i have seen Liverpool and to a lesser extent Chelsea, play better than UTD, reducing the gap between them.
If this continues,as I think it will, both will overtake UTD.
Report buddeliea December 31, 2017 7:15 AM GMT
Chelsea go 2nd,Liverpool narrow the gap to UTD to 3 points.
Confident This will continue, especially the way UTD are now performing.

Rancid team with a rancid manager always trying to shift the blame despite spending 300mil.  Premier league is a pile of overpaid poo tbh and about to become a very fragmented expensive cost to stay away fans (attending fans already mugged in many games for what is served up) if Netflix, Amazon and Facebook start bidding.
Report pushkin99 December 31, 2017 3:25 PM GMT
If moanrhino stays until the end of the season, I really can't see manure getting above 5th. There are just too many better teams in the PL

Sadly, I really cant see the owners putting up with moanrhino's nonsense to the end of the season though, due to:

the dire, dull functional hoofball served up,
discontentment rife across their own stands,
supporters now booing their own team at home matches,
              rapidly deteriorating results,
the dreadful image issues and reputational damage caused by moanrhino's petulance, which
all leads to a significant consequential fall in the value of their asset.

Shearer was so right in his summary on MoTD about moanrhino and his team playing in his image.

Even the normally mild mannered Lineker, accused moanrhino of incessant whining. How right he is.
