Hi,

My Betfair account was hacked in April and two bets were placed by the hacker(s) as a result of which almost £800 was lost/taken from my account.

I asked Betfair to investigate which they did, however, they have concluded that "there was no evidence of unauthorised access on [my] account". This is despite the fact that:

1) the stakes of the two bets were completely out of line with my betting history (i.e. at least 50 times higher than my usual stakes);
2) one of the bets was placed on a baseball game, a sport that I have never previously bet on;
3) the IP addresses of the computers/devices used to place the two bets have never previously been used to place bets on my account. On investigating the IP addresses, one was in the United States.

I got chatting about it to a friend of mine recently who said that something very similar had happened to him about 6 months ago. He logged in to his account to find that the balance was zero and when he checked the betting history, a bet had been placed staking the entire contents of his account (as happened with me), however he hadn't placed the bet. As with me, the bet was completely out of character with his betting history. He contacted Betfair about it and they reimbursed him without any problems (albeit that he had "only" lost £40). He doesn't use Betfair anymore because he is concerned that it may happen again.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and, if so, how Betfair dealt with it?

Thanks.

I think there is someone on the Horse Racing forum who can help you take this futher.

I would also suggest that you use Two Step authentification to log into your account, making it highly unlikely you could be hacked again.

Thanks for your help scandinavian_haven. I've now posted on the Horse Racing forum and so hopefully the relevant person will reply.

I don't know to be honest Donny but one of the IP addresses that Betfair told me was used by the hacker(s) was definitely in El Segundo, California.

Screenshot previous bets and the hacked ones then let Betfair / Paddy know you are going to use the Screenshot in an article you write for a certain paper.They don't want negative vibes for a £800

Say i am using the screenshot as i think someone inside the company done the dirty on me

So in other words they can see you were hacked, as long as you can prove you were in the UK at the time they haven't got a leg to stand on. Take them to small claims court. Used to be free don't know if it still is.

ufcdan t&c state that the user is responsible for his own security, so it doesn't matter whether or not he was hacked.  He will have to show that BF were negligent.  He does this by showing that they should have spotted unusual betting and the unusual IP address which indicated a criminal offence by betfair - accepting a bet from california.  They could lose their new jersey licence if they accept illegal bets.

You would be concerned about ex-betfair employees maybe with access to privileged info

Fair enough Dave then I would strongly point out to them the breaking of Federal law. I know I couldn't access my account when in Virginia a couple of years ago.

Strangely enough there is a link from Betfair to El Segundo, California. TVG Network ( yank sports channel ) is owned by Paddy Power Betfair, you can get this channel from only 2 Satellite companies, one of which is called DirecTV, DirecTV's Headquarters just so happen to be based in El Segundo, California. Confused
