Every national side has a weakness. Italy's first choice striker plays for Southampton. Brazil are a one man team. Spain have a suspect defence and a clown in goal. Our weakness is our midfield, but defence and attack are more than capable.

Also, Milner and Shelvey are good players. And Delph can't be doing too much wrong if he's just got a move to one of the most important sides in the world.
Report David Icke September 8, 2015 1:34 PM BST
Milner will not be a good player so long as he has a hole in his ar$e.

Why even bother discussing this?  Tell me when England have done well at a tournament.  We are crap at them always have been always will be, it doesn't matter who the players are or the manager, we can't do tournament football.

Only an idiot would  expect anything other than the usual dross.

Just for the sake of balance, we are the only team in Europe to have still have maximum points in qualifying.

I know getting carried away with that would be a big mistake for a number of reasons, but I think this thread might be a little on the pessimistic side.
Report asparagus September 9, 2015 9:09 AM BST
PatraTheCat, people love to knock England whether it's on here or in general. We have got an outside chance. Less chance than France, Germany and Spain but as much chance as anyone else. We've got a good team spirit, good attacking options and a good goalkeeper. We need to find a settled and more coherent back four between now and next summer but that's not impossible.

We have any number of problems, chief among which will be the continuing fallout from the impression Rooney made upon the nation, and indeed the world, in 2004, when he looked like becoming a truly great player.

Unfortunately, several observers - including every subsequent England manager - believe that that is what he has become, when the reality is that he is nothing of the sort. Of course there is some merit in his achievement of scoring more goals than anyone else for England, nobody is denying that, but at Major Championships post-2004 his performances and his goalscoring record have been truly abysmal.

Hodgson's fixation with James Milner will also cost us - noticeable again last night that he was booked after showing the touch of a rapist in trying to control the football.

Ultimately though, the players are irrelevant when the pattern of play is so stilted, so 1970s. Time and again last night, Shelvey has the ball in the middle of the park, he's looking forward for movement - and there is none. Rooney just can not make the kinds of runs to offer and create space because he is too slow and too worn out by years of unprofessional preparation.

More worryingly, the three young players behind Rooney - Barkley, Sterling and Oxlade-Chamberlain - are all showing the signs, at least they were last night, of the real English disease. The failure of a succession of managers to encourage individuality and creativity from their players. A fear of the responsibility to express themselves, a responsibility just as vital to any team as the willingness to run around chasing and tackling the opposition.

Finally, when you have a manager who can not see that Harry Kane should be on the pitch from the start of the match whoever has to be left out to accommodate him, then we are going nowhere. Again.

Back home they'll be thinking about us
When we are far away (on our holidays out foreign after our early exit)
Back home they'll be really behind us
In every game we play
They'll share every goal we are scoring (steady on !!!)
Out there we will still hear them roaring
And we'll give all we've got to give (but keep the £200k a week)
For the folks back home

Back home they'll be watching and waiting (and waiting, and waiting)
And cheering every move
Back home though they think we're the greatest (what?)
That's what we've got to prove
Once more we will meet with the best
Like before we'll be put to the test
Oh we will give all we've got to give (not a lot, not a lot)
For the folks back home

They'll see as they're watching and praying
That we put our hearts in our playing
We'll fight until the whistle goes (red cards !!!)
For the folks back home
