I've been to Dubai.Artificial, soulless place which is run on slave labour.
Some people really like it though...
Report deeppockets August 1, 2014 3:29 PM BST
Haven't been in Hong Kong since we handed it back but had some fabulous nights at Sha Tin and Happy Valley when I was there
Report Davy August 1, 2014 3:37 PM BST
I have not been to Hong Kong. But, i was in Tokyo and Seoul which i suppose are a bit similar.
Trust me, minimize your time in Dubai.Hong Kong would be far better.
I've been to over 40 countries and the UAE is probably my least favourite..

Have been to Hong Kong, cracking place, a real buzzy atmosphere, and lovely looking women. Stay in Kowloon - you'll have  a blast.

Wouldn't go to Dubai if you paid me, looks completely bland, souless, and far too hot.

Cheers lads i appreciate the advice. Was thinking 3/4 days in Dubai and a week in Hong Kong. Travelling on my own so is it relatively safe in Hong Kong. looking forward to going racing and heard Hong Kong is great to go out for a night.
Report Platini August 1, 2014 4:26 PM BST
I'd say HK is safe generally, but it really depends on what activities you get up to.

Last time I was there, I made the mistake of walking into a karaoke bar which turned out to be something else (a hostess bar) Laugh
Do your homework, plenty of reviews, trip reports etc online.
Report Davy August 1, 2014 4:26 PM BST
Honestly it's safe almost anywhere as long as you keep your wits about you.I'm in Northern Mexico right now and have had no problems whatsoever.Asian cities in general are very safe.Only think to worry about might me taxi drivers ripping you off but violent crime there is extremely rare...

sounds a good plan

always felt safe out in hong kong at night, .....

there are some great hotels in dubai, with great service and some fantastic restaurants

you can get alcohol but it isnt cheap, but airport is duty free

there is a little museum of dubai history that most of the city tours take you too
it was very interesting and deffo worth a visit

The world is far safer than people make it out to be.I spent 2 weeks in Pakistan a few months ago.Went all over, including Karachi and Peshawar. All I met were curious, extremely friendly people...one of the best places I have ever been

When in Hong Kong, I would say go to the races at Happy Valley (take your passport to get a tourist ticket), Kowloon is a decent night out and a good place to see during the day. Going up the Peak late afternoon to see the views of Hong Kong by day and night is a must. A trip to Macau and its casino's is well worth it can go by ferry (they were building a bridge to Macau, not sure if thats finished yet though).

Was in Hong Kong 4 weeks ago but only for 2 days, went a bit unprepared so can't really advise you greatly, just went to Sha Tin racecourse which was a good day out, mad for the horses they are, great facilities there. I stayed on Nathan Road, would stay somewhere else if going again, loads of shopping but of no interest to me, look on trip advisor for advice on nightlife, wish I done that, done plenty of exploring that area but missed all the fun really! Cool place, would recommend having more of a plan than I did before getting there..
Report RamonSanchezPizjuan August 1, 2014 5:10 PM BST
Thanks for all the info lads. Yeah will defo go to the races on the Wednesday and will have a few nights out. I will travel to Macau for an evening also. I will stay 3/4 nights in Dubai and have 7/8 days in Hong Kong.

HK has it all.

Great beaches, city life, the star ferry, the peak, great public transport, Aberdeen, Stanley, night markets, wonderful food..

Been 3x and would happily go again Grin

go and see the giant buddha, when we were in hk it was a bit of a bus journey to see it but they were building a cable car to take you to it which will almost cetainly be built and the views getting there should be stunning

dubai sounds sh1t if your not going for the racing
Report Crisp77 August 2, 2014 9:14 AM BST
You could say that about lots of places
Report G1_Jockey_4 August 2, 2014 9:16 AM BST
true

vegas is also in the desert but must be miles better than dubai
Report Davy August 2, 2014 8:08 PM BST
Anywhere would be miles better than Dubai.I have never understood why people travel there.
Totally fake.No amazing architecture to look at since they were bedouins before they discovered oil.

No nightlife, and worst of all, the way that the Emirates treat foreign workers from poor countries.
It really is shameful.
Report Biscuit1979 August 2, 2014 8:20 PM BST
No nightlife in Dubai? That must be a joke surely. Did you visit during Ramadan or something?
Report Can't Catch Me August 2, 2014 8:24 PM BST
Dubai is fine if you want a top quality hotel, golf, good restaurants and guaranteed weather. Plenty of decent nightlife about as well. It is a bit soulless and would be well done my list of places to go, but it isn't that bad.
Report Can't Catch Me August 2, 2014 8:28 PM BST
Id be tempted to go to HK first. The nightlife is different class, and most of the best stuff has already been mentioned. Happy Valley is a brilliant night out and it's well worth getting the boat over to Macau... if you like a night out and partying you will be absolutely bollocksed after a week there!

Three days chilling out on the beach in Dubai on the way home IMO.
Report elise August 2, 2014 8:42 PM BST
i wouldn't bother with dubai, would do hk and either a thai/malaysian beach, try langkawi mauybe but there's loads of choice

if you just want sun and a pool fair enough, but as some have said it's pretty soulless in dubai, nice if you like tall buildings, sand and ferraris (the 5 star hotels are decent but you'll do well to leave the pool area given the heat)
Report vodka and redbull August 2, 2014 10:03 PM BST
wan chai district a descent place to stop ,pretty central, near time square etc.you will have a ball there,go for it.
Report WhiteHatJon August 2, 2014 10:18 PM BST
Totally disagree with those that say dont bother with Dubai. Tell me somewhere with better weather 6 hours from the UK ?

Tell me a better racecourse than Meydan ?

Tell me a better bar than the Skyliner at the Burj or the Budda Bar ?

Idiots.
Report bigH August 2, 2014 10:22 PM BST
HK is awesome

Dubai dull and soulless - sweet FA to do in Dubai apart from sunbathing
Report Zazu August 3, 2014 1:20 PM BST
Other than the view, whats makes HK so different to any other major city?
Report Platini August 3, 2014 1:34 PM BST
the food
the culture
the women

just for starters.
