Terribly sad news. For those of us who were fans of Darts in that pre-1978 World Championship era, he was The Voice of Darts. (And Speedway for that matter).
It was Dave's voice that guided schoolboy complete Darts newbies like myself through ITV's coverage of the News of the World Championships, the unforgettable 'Indoor League' and the other occasional darts events that ITV covered.
It was through Dave's commentaries that I learned about the finishes, the tactics, the personalities and places of darts.
It was his voice and his commentaries that me and my fellow teenage darts fans liked to imitate while we hit our 26s and missed the board completely while attempting checkouts. (As I recall some players still do the latter when they've had a good bet on the opponent, but that another story).
A certain S. Waddell often referred to Dave as 'The Doyen' of darts commentators, not least while sharing the microphone with him on Sky's coverage. Now they are both sadly gone.
RIP
