Afternoon folks,

Getting down to the business end now it seems and 2 intriguing semi finals in prospect this evening. Been spending a bit of time going over some stuff this morning so I've put up some general stats below before I preview the games.

Peter Wright: 18 maxes in 112 legs. High checks 151/104/161/164
Simon Whitlock: 30 maxes in 88 legs. High checks 120/92/80/136
Adrian Lewis: 23 maxes in 72 legs. High checks 126/146/115/115
Michael Van Gerwen: 30 maxes in 90 legs. High checks 137/118/126/144

So from this it's clear that Wright has played the most legs but had the least maxes no doubt due to the large barrelled darts. He's however been deadly for high check backers covering the line in 3 of his 4 matches. Whitlock has got the joint most maxes but has been nowhere near as effective on high checks as he used to be. Adie has played the least legs which may explain why he's had slightly less maximums than usual and MVG is averaging a max every legs and has had a check of over 100 in every game (Including 8 in his QF win over Webster.

Not sure what exactly it tells us but I'm hoping it might aid a bet or two later in this preview Grin

Peter Wright v Simon Whitlock:

QF - Wright bt Wes Newton 5-4
Ave: 95.85
180's: 6
CO%: 39%
HC: 164
Legs played: 43

Whitlock bt Ian White 5-4
Ave: 95.77
180's: 15
CO%: 38%
HC: 136
Legs played: 40

First semi sees the forum horse Snakebite take on the aussie Whitlock in what promises to be a very close match. Based on averages and CO% of QF wins there is nothing between the two but that was Wright's worst performance and I think he was really tired after his draining win over Michael Smith the previous evening. I'd hope the day off has done him a lot of good as he will never have a better chance of reaching his first world final. Whitlock played well for 5 sets v White but then started to crumble as the line approached. It's not the first time this has happened and whether it's just nerves or mental scars it's hard to say. Bookies make it hard to split them with Whitlock being a marginal favourite probably based on his past experience but I think Wright is playing the better darts and has done for the past year. I cannot see anything other than a really close match here and as such I'm going to have a stab at 2 bets. I think over 9 sets is a fair play as they are closely matched and I cannot see it being a runaway either way. I also like the look of the HC market as wright especially has proved deadly on the 3 figure outshots and if we get a lot of legs as expected it has to have a decent chance.

Recommendation: 1pt win over 9.5 sets @ Evs (general) & 1 pt win over 139.5 @ 5/6 (PP)

Adrian Lewis v Michael Van Gerwen:

QF - Lewis bt James Wade 5-1
Ave: 96.56
180's: 7
CO%: 32%
HC: 115
Legs played: 24

MVG bt Mark Webster 5-3
Ave: 98.86
180's: 9
CO%: 56%
HC: 144
Legs played: 31

Think this is the match that all darts fans have been hoping for ever since the draw was made. They've had an incredible rivalry in the last 15 months and if this match is as good as the previous matches then we could be in for an incredible evening's viewing. In his win over Wade I felt that Lewis never really came out of 2nd gear and seemed to feel like he always felt he was in complete control of the match without ever being pushed. He is definitely one of those players who finds his best game when someone plays their best against him and I think we might get that there. MVG was incredible fro 5 sets v Webster and averaged around 107 for most of that game. Then suddenly he went to sleep and his form completely deserted him and in the end he was scrambling to get over the line. He admitted himself he had just switched off and I think he knows himself that he cannot afford to let that happen here.

Now as I've had a bit of time I've gone over the last few meetings on tv (excluding the Premier League as I don't have them to hand) and here's the results below:

Grand Prix 12 - MVG won 3-1
15 legs played
0 maxes

Worlds 13 - MVG won 5-4
37 legs played
MVG 15-11 maxes

Euro Champs 13 - Lewis won 11-8
19 legs played
Lewis 8-9 maxes

World Matchplay 13 - Lewis won 17-15
32 legs played
Lewis 16-6 maxes

Sydney Masters 13 - MVG won 10-7
17 legs played
7-7 maxes

GSOD 13 - Lewis won 10-8
18 legs played
Lewis 12-6 maxes

Players Champs 13 - MVG won 9-6
15 legs played
MVG 4-7 maxes

So basically not a lot to separate them as expected and they always seem to feature close matches with a lot of high scoring. I was actually up late last night waiting for the max quotes as I knew it would be high and it certainly is as 26 or 27 are going to be needed to beat the overs. Now I've only got a handful of matches that have beat that but Lewis has featured in most of them. Based on the earlier stats both are averaging around 1 max every 3 legs so in order to get to 26 we're looking at needing about 39 legs which is achievable if the match goes 9 sets plus. I also think the pace will suit so we might slightly improve on the average. I'm going to go for the lowest quote as I think it will be tight but hopefully it should get across the line.

Recommendation: 1pt win over 25.5 maxes @ 8/11 (lads)

Summary: Thoroughly looking forward to what is potentially a tremendous evening of darts with 2 very well matched games. Hopefully a winner or two can make it even more enjoyable. All views and thoughts welcome as it's what makes this the best place to post and may all your bets be lucky.

Madness, have you seen both semi finals leg on leg scores (i mean every dart thrown/scored and noted down etc...) C'mon Wright Wink

P.S. I'm wise enough to know mvg can put in an incredible run of under 15 darts per leg sequence and clean up a couple of sets in no time. He's also prone to some stinkers too. As Mardle will no doubt say in the comms box...This match is all about what Wright does...etc...

Why do people get drawn in to averages? In the 1st set mvg was near 110, before hovering around the 100+ mark and finishing with 103.02

I've already posted ststs/darts used per leg, but in case it's been missed or over looked, here they are again:

Semi Finals average stats per leg:
mvg darts per leg 14.59 (15 darts) checkout 58% - Legs played 22.
wright darts per leg 14.99 (15 darts) checkout 60% - Legs played 33.

Shows that Wright is consistently holding his average over a longer.

MVG in my eyes is never a 1/4 shot in a million years! One last thing - James Hubbard Cool

Good luck to all you mvg lumpers going in big, who believe this is a formality.
