Don't you worry, in the highly unlikely event of any hanky-panky on this match, the BDO Head Honchos would be down on th miscreants like a ton of bricks before you could say 'Robbo's completely missed the board again aiming for a routine double'.

There were vile and ludicrous rumours of Correct Score Betting fixing a few years back, which were thankfully proved groundless following an utterly forensic financial investigation by officials.

It couldn't happen apparently. They'd know.

From Daily Star:

DARTS FINAL CAUGHT IN MATCH FIXING STORM

‘BOOKIES probably took more on correct score bets in this match than every other match combined and all 3-0, 3-1’THE World Darts Championship has been rocked by a sensational match-fixing investigation.

As fans gear up for today’s final, gambling bosses are investigating allegations of suspicious betting on a first-round clash at the Lakeside.

Brit Davey “The Badger” Prins, 43, lost the match 3-0 to “Free” Willy van de Wiel last Sunday.

The Dutchman was knocked out in the next round.
It is understood he is not being investigated for any wrong-doing.
But hours before the fixture, a flood of bets were placed on that exact score.
The betting activity prompted several top bookmakers to suspend betting after dramatically dropping the odds.

Now Ladbrokes and William Hill are refusing to pay out on winning wagers as the Gambling Commission and the British Darts Organisation launch an inquiry that is likely to involve police.

It’s a massive blow for the sport ahead of today’s BBC-televised live world final, which is expected to draw two million viewers.

Last night, as Prins declared he had “nothing to hide”, the BDO said in a statement: “We have been advised that there are betting patterns relating to the above match that may warrant further investigation.

“We have not yet been provided with the detail but are expecting full co-operation from the bookmakers affected.”

In the week shamed former English cricketer Mervyn Westfield admitted spot-fixing, Ladbrokes confirmed it had reported “suspicious betting” to the Gambling Commission amid concerns over foul play.

A Ladbrokes spokesman told the Daily Star Sunday: “We have withheld payments on the match.

“This wouldn’t normally be the type of match on which sizeable bets are placed but big sums were going on correct score bets of 3-0 and 3-1 to Van de Wiel.

“It was one-way traffic and that’s very unusual for a match of this kind.”

Odds on a Van de Wiel win shortened from 4/6 to 1/3 overnight.

Although the 29-year-old was the favourite, odds on him winning 3-0 were a much more generous 9/2 with Ladbrokes before being suspended.

Punters and bookies jammed internet forums with comments.

One Betfair user said he was “surprised” at the betting patterns, adding: “Bookies probably taken more on correct score bets in this match than every other match combined and all 3-0, 3-1.”

William Hill stopped taking bets and a spokesman said: “We saw what we considered to be unusual betting patterns so we took the precaution of suspending the market and reported our findings to the Gambling Commission.

“We won’t be paying out on score bets in the meantime.”

Even smaller firms including Corbett Sports suspended the market.

Bookie Mark Rogerson tweeted at the time: “Suspicious betting patterns in the darts match between Van de Wiel v Prins. We have suspended betting.”

But warehouse worker Prins protested his innocence when the Daily Star Sunday confronted him at his terrace house in Peterlee, County Durham.

He said: “I’ve heard the rumours and I’ve got nothing to hide.

“I can see how it doesn’t look good but I’ve done nothing wrong. All I do is play my darts and try and win.

“That’s what I did in the last match and that’s what I’ll continue to do.

“I’ve heard nothing from the BDO.”

Players, officials. bookies and others will be hauled in front of darts top brass, who last night vowed to launch a “robust” investigation.

According to BDO corruption guidelines, players found guilty of match fixing will be fined at least £10,000 and suspended or booted out of the sport. They will also face a criminal probe and possible jail.

A spokesman for the BDO said last night: “The BDO takes its responsibility to protect the integrity of the great sport of darts very seriously.

“To that end we have put in place a detailed code of practice on betting and related activity that gives us broad investigative and disciplinary powers in matters such as this.

“Using our powers under the Betting Code, we will now open a formal investigation into this matter.”

He added: “We have already instructed our lawyers, who are specialists in this area, to assist us in pursuing the investigation robustly and efficiently, so as to ensure the integrity of the sport is protected while at the same time respecting our obligation to treat those being investigated fairly.

“As part of the investigation, information will be gathered from all pertinent parties, including the players themselves, the match officials, the bookmakers, and others, in order to determine, based on the available evidence, whether or not there is a case to answer for breach of the BDO’s rules.

“If it is determined that there is a case to answer, the BDO will pursue it vigorously.”

The Dutchman will have to be renamed Willy van de Wiel-BARROW from now on, as he'll be needing one to haul his dough all the way home.

Report DartsnBooze January 15, 2012 8:36 PM GMT
it was a great pun.

i never saw the match so can't pass judgement on it but like i said before a 3-0 3-1 win is not out of the question for an odds on poke.

3-0 @ 4/1
3-1 @ 4-1

only pays 6/4. is that right? 20 to win 30 profit?

Not like bookies took too much from the bloke going from shop to shop in the north east to get on.

I'd be more interested in

3-0 robson - played awful.
3-0 pins?

the double pays 24/1 at least
