Bit late but some of us actually have to work for a living I'm afraid. Hopefully some decent action tonight and hoping I don't make myself look a tit again by writing off boys based on the fact I haven't heard of them (apologies to James Richardson!)
Andy Hamilton v Antonio Alcinas: I'm in a bit of a quandry in this match as I think there will be a few maxes but I'm not sure how to play it. Hamilton used to be one of the best max hitters in the game but the last few tournaments I've not been convinced his grouping is as good as it was. It might just be my eye or a gut feeling but thats what I've had. Alcinas is a bit of an interesting one as first time I seen him I thought he looked like he had a decent game but for some niggling reason I seem to have gone off him a bit (It might have been the world cup that put the seeds in my mind). Last time on tv he got beat 6-2 v Kim Huybrechts but hit 3 maxes in 8 legs and averaged 96 but he lost R1 v wade last year and only averaged 85 in a 3v0 loss. I'm in 2 minds whether to tip Alcinas most maxes at 9/4 or total match maxes instead and I'm going to go for the shorter price instead as Hamilton is capable of going nuts on the treble.
Recommendation: 1.5pts win over 6.5 maxes @ 5/6 (general)
Per Laursen v Petri Korte: Laursen is a regular here at Ally Pally and is one of these players that will probably average mid 80's most times he plays. It'll be the first time I have seen Korte but if Laursen is his usual self I think he should set up a meeting with Wade.
Recommendation: No Bet
Mervyn King v Geoff Kime: King will be on a bit of a high after beating Taylor last week at the Players but he then suffered the comedown with a QF defeat next day. I've got a long standing theory that it takes a lot of energy out of a player to beat Taylor and opposing them next match often pays dividend so I'm not reading too much into his loss in the next round. Geoff Kime is an aussie and I'm fairly sure its his first tv appearance in the UK. Did a bit of reading up on him and he doesn't look a 100 average man in the waiting so King should come through it albeit at a short price.
Recommendation: No Bet
Kevin Painter v Arron Monk: Forum fave King Muttley makes his R1 bow on the back of his first tv final win last week at the players. He played well in victory but some players definitely underperformed against him and I think hes short based on the back of that. Monk is very highly rated but is another player who has yet to do it on the tv despite some decent floor performances. Much as I hate to go against him as I actually love his style but Painter is just too short here. Its a punt based on a price just being too big as much as seriously fancying Monk but I don't think he should be as big a dog as he is and as such a minimum stake bet on him is in order.
James Wade v Laursen/Korte: Hard to preview too much as the opponent isn't known but if its Laursen and he looks ok in his prelim I'd be keen to lay Wade 3-0 at a short price. Should win the game but definitely capable of sloppy spells that could cost him a set.
Summary: Hopefully a winning start to the night on the maxes followed up by Monk causing a small upset v The Artist. All views and banter as welcome as always and may all the bets be winners for the forum regulars. HH
