Yesterday started well and got progressively worse. Today looks a bit harder but there might be a bet or two to be had so here goes.

Colin Osborne v Jamie Caven:
R1 Osborne bt Chris Thompson 3-1
3 dart ave: 93.02
Doubles: 27%
180's: 5
HC: 65

Caven bt Devon Petersen 3-1
3 dart ave: 84.28
Doubles: 31.4%
180's: 4
HC: 161

Opening match sees 2 of the players who in my opinion should be higher up the rankings than they are. Both of them really seem to struggle with their tv form though and especially their doubling. Ossie played really well in his first round win as evidenced by a 93 average despite only hitting 27% of his doubles. If he could even get that up t0 45-50% then he could definitely do some damage with his scoring power. Caven was very inconsistent in his win v the qualifier Petersen but he got through in the end at least. He's another who can score very heavily but just seems to struggle to finish a lot of legs off. Personally I can see this being a long drawn out affair where both players miss a lot of doubles and gift legs to their opponent. The bet I like here is the maxes as both are very capable of bouts of heavy scores and I can't see any less than 6 sets in this match.
Recommendation: 2pts win over 9.5 maxes @ 5/6 (General)

Gary Anderson v Dennis Priestley:
R1 Anderson bt Morihiro Hashimoto 3-0
3 dart ave: 103.26
Doubles: 64.2%
180's: 3
HC: 122

Priestley bt Bernd Roith 3-0
3 dart ave: 92.21
Doubles: 52.9%
180's: 3
HC: 52.9%

2nd match sees the underachieving Anderson take on the former world champion Dennis Priestley. Anderson was very good in his opener v Hashimoto as he scored heavily and finished really well for a change. However he was under absolutely no pressure and thats when he tends to struggle. Priestley again came through v a qualifier who didn't really put any pressure on him at all and he won easily in the end. At first I thought that the pace of the game might affect Anderson but then I remembered he practices with Justin Pipe so I very much doubt that the pace is going to trouble him that much. Would love to see Dennis roll back the years here but I think Anderson will eventually prevail maybe 4-1. Don't see any real value in the match though so a watching brief for me here.
Recommendation: No Bet

Mervyn King v Andy Smith:
R1 King bt Magnus Caris 3-0
3 dart ave: 94.25
Doubles: 45%
180's: 1
HC: 136

Smith bt Shane Tichowitsch 3-1
3 dart ave: 93.26
Doubles: 57.9%
180's: 6
HC: 121

Final match of the afternoon sees King take on Smith in what could be an interesting match in my view. King was another who played well under no pressure in the opening round but he's been struggling badly as a result of his Dad dying. He's also been looking after his Mum who isn't well and admitted that darts is not his major focus right now. Smith really impressed me in his win over the aussie Tichowitsch as he scored much heavier than usual and finished really well which is the norm for him anyway. I have a sneaky feeling that Smith could go close to winning this match but I think the safer bet is on the handicap as I can really see him getting 2 sets at the very worst.
Recommendation: 2pts win Andy Smith +2.5 sets @ 4/5 (Boils)

Ray Barneveld v Kevin McDine:
R1 Barney bt Steve Hine 3-1
3 dart ave: 94.28
Doubles: 37.9%
180's: 2
HC: 81

McDine bt Barrie Bates 3-1
3 dart ave: 77.65
Doubles: 24.4%
180's: 2
HC: 120

Final match of round 2 sees Barney take on McDine in what on paper looks to be a formality. Barney struggled for a set v Hine but after that he settled into a rhythm and played really well. McDine on the other hand was dreadful and came through with the worst winning average of the round and the worst doubling accuracy! Unfortunately I have a massive blind spot for him as I know he's got so much ability but for one reason or another he isn't producing it right now. Barney is a great front runner but if the pressure suddenly came on I'm not convinced the headshaking won't return. I'm just not sure if McDine is the man to apply that pressure? Call it blind faith but I think McDine can win at least a set here and can also push Barney close on the maxes as he isn't hitting as many as in previous years.
Recommendation: 1pt win Kevin McDine +3.5 sets @ 4/7 (Billies)
0.5pt win McDine most maxes @ 13/5 (Billies)

Mark Webster v Mark Hylton:
R2 Webster bt Ronnie Baxter 4-0
3 dart ave: 97.22
Doubles: 48%
180's: 3
HC: 167

Hylton bt Colin Lloyd 4-2
3 dart ave: 93.52
Doubles: 51.6%
180's: 7
HC: 138

First match of the last 16 sees the 2 left handed Mark's meet in what could be an interesting game. Webster is playing really well these last few weeks and suddenly looks as if he belongs on stage. He hasn't dropped a set yet but he was let off the hook twice v Baxter and the game could easily have been 2-2 if Baxter hadn't choked on his doubles. No doubt he's playing well but I'd like to see how he responds if he gets in a fight. Hylton has been the revelation of the tournament for me and I've been really impressed with his heavy scoring and his doubling under pressure. It's a match that could either be another stroll for Webster or a real dog fight and I'm not convinced by either to put a bet up. If I knew this would go 5 or 6 sets I would be very keen on the maxes as Hylton has hit the most of anybody in the last 16 and Webster is more than capable when he's in the mood. The nagging doubt is if Webster gets a lead early will Hylton respond?
Recommendation: No Bet

Phil Taylor v Peter Wright:
R2 Taylor bt Per Laursen 4-0
3 dart ave: 102.09
Doubles: 57.1%
180's: 1
HC: 107

Wright bt Paul Nicholson 4-2
3 dart ave: 85.39
Doubles: 44.1%
180's: 1
HC: 120

Final match today sees Taylor take on Wright in what should be a straightforward victory for Phil. He looked much more settled in his last win and if he maintains that form then he's going to be the man to beat again you would think. He's definitely becoming more tetchy though as he's now having a pop at fans, commentators and anybody else who doesn't kiss his backside these last few months and its not that becoming. Wright has played ok in his 2 wins but has undoubtedly been helped by some ropey finishing from his opponents. He has finished his chances well though when they came along but I can't see Taylor being so generous. 1/2 about a 4-0 win would appeal to the big hitters but the bet I like is under the maxes. Phil's only hit 2 so far this tournament and Wright has only hit 3 in 41 legs thus far too. If the scoreline is a rout it's going to have to go some to reach 7 maxes I think.
Recommendation: 1pt win under 6.5 maxes @ 4/5 (General)

Summary: Strongest bet again comes in the opener as I can see a lot of big scores in that match and I also like the look of Smith in receipt of the start. In the evening its more speculative bets especially in the shape of McDine but you never know what could happen as shown by Suljovic last night.

All views and bets welcome and best of luck to everybody punting on the arrers today. Fingers crossed for more entertainment on here on easily the best thread I participate in during the year Happy

Don't think there's much wrong with stepping away when you have to switch from d18 to d9, bit different if it's d16 to d8 imo

Report paddletoe December 29, 2010 10:52 PM GMT
Happyhibee, i think Taylors problem this tournament is a combination of him looking very fragile and in poor form but also that there are three other players in the draw throwing out of their skins. Taylor at his very best would be no shoo in for this years event.

Report happyhibee December 29, 2010 10:53 PM GMT
I think over the last 3-6 months he misses more doubles at crucial times than he ever has. For 15 years I've never seen anybody with bigger balls than Taylor he just never missed when given a chance but now I aint so sure his nerve is as good
Report aziraphale December 29, 2010 10:53 PM GMT
I think it's not fair how they make the treble bigger when the first two darts go in, makes it much easier to get a 180. They ought to leave it the same size.

that's just it with phil though.  Played poor but still averaged 98 odd.  Webster will only just manage that on a good day.  Should get to the semis, and from there who knows.  Whitlock and then Anderson as a route to the title would defo be a big test as they both have the scoring/doubling (on their day) to beat him.
