Here's a preview from our beloved tipping website, just so there's no quabbling during the tournament. Again, nothing got to do with me!

World Cup of Darts Preview

Whether it is football, rugby, golf or any other sport for that matter, nothing gets the pulses racing quite like a World Cup. The prospect of nations doing battle for the ultimate prize in their sport is mouth-watering to say the very least and now darts fans around the world can experience that feeling this coming Friday as the brand new PDC World Cup of Darts gets under way. And all the action is being screened live on Sky Sports.

This unique and exciting darting spectacle will see 24 nations compete for the crown and the teams ranked 9-24 kick off the action in Friday afternoon’s first round. For those unfamiliar with the format, the winners will join the other top eight ranked nations in that evening’s second round schedule. The second round winners will then progress into Saturday’s group stages, which consist of two groups of four. The top two nations from each group will then qualify for the semis.

Local talent Mick McGowan and William O’Connor will be flying the flag for Ireland and should they overcome their opening clash against the Slovakian pair of Peter Martin & Oto Zmelik, they will then take on the formidable duo of the number 3 seeds Australian, which will be represented by Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson.

England’s duo of Phil Taylor and James Wade will be desperate to put their recent disappointments behind them with a tournament victory here. ‘The Power’ was dumped out of the recent Grand Slam by Steve Beaton at the semi-final stage and Wade was surprisingly beaten 16-12 in the final by Scott Waites after storming into an 8-0 lead. The bookies however feel that the world’s top two individuals will get back on track this weekend and are offering a very short and unappealing price of 4/11, which is generally available. However, punters looking for value should definately consider Australia and Scotland.

Robert Thornton and the fans favourite Gary Anderson will be representing the Scots and both men showed good form throughout last month’s Grand Slam, with Anderson narrowly losing in the quarter-finals, which culminated with a respectable tournament average of 95.67. Thornton also progressed from his group with three straight wins and that included a victory over world number four Simon Whitlock. So that being said, the standout 11/1 with Paddy Power certainly looks tempting. The Australian duo of Whitlock and Nicholson did have a poor Grand Slam but punters should not be put off by that. These are two of the heaviest scorers in the game and Whitlock is one of the best finishers, if not the best, in the game. That mix of high scoring and deadly finishing could see the pair go a long way here and the general price of 6/1 does look decent.

If Scott Waites’ recent Grand Slam win is anything to go by, then some big upsets could be on the cards during the tournament and if punters want to get a run for their money with a real outsider, then the Welsh may be the way to go. Barry Bates and Mark Webster have shown that they are no pushovers and if they can get a bit of momentum going, then there is no reason why they can’t push the big boys all the way. They’re the outside value bet but Australia and Scotland are the teams to side with this week.

Recommendations

2pts win Australia @ 6/1 (Paddy Power, Stan James)
1 pt e/w Scotland @ 11/1 (Paddy Power)

Disgrace to the shirt.

On a serious note, blindly picking the no1 and 2 is stupid. You need fast starters and I dont think these two are among the fastest. I know Phil has to be there by 'divine right'. but I think someone like Baxter would have been a safer bet if you need to get off quickly.

Thanks to our tipster, I backed both Australia & Scotland to win and also had a sneaky bet each/way on Wales. I reckon after Wade's near miss in the Grand Slam and now by his three tips here, it looks as though this guy knows what he's talkin about. I'll be following him in the future!
Report ChildOfMine2 December 4, 2010 12:55 AM GMT
And the Racing Post with their headline of England unlikely to be stopped. There was always going to be a good chance that Taylor & Wade wouldn't gel together. Tipping up Scotland & Australia at 6/1 & 11/1 when they're now 2/1 & 5/2 is good going and I don't care what anybody says. Good tipping is hard to come by!

Report ChildOfMine2 December 4, 2010 11:15 AM GMT
Anywayyyyyyyyyy, Think Spain at 6's are a big price to win Group B given the way they played last night. And Austria to perhaps qualify from Group B if I can get a price, they're 14's to top the group which is probably beyond them!

The Championship of Darts form from Wade looks handy but it was a very short format.  I can't take anything from the Grand Prix win as a form line averaging between 82 and 89 in winning the title.  Admittedly double in, double out but he won that tounament against players who averaged 67,87,85,85 and 89 with 8 players beating his best average throughout the week.

King or Jenkins 2nd round (I think i'm right in saying) if he qualifies from a tough group.  Got to be with Newton at 85/1 e/w as the form player and Scott Waites fresh off a win (albeit an easy tournament) and with excellent recent form here looks excellent at 80/1.  Best of Luck

That is prior to the GSOD on another thread.  Would you consider that half decent?
