Here's a preview from our beloved tipping website, just so there's no quabbling during the tournament. Again, nothing got to do with me!

World Cup of Darts Preview

Whether it is football, rugby, golf or any other sport for that matter, nothing gets the pulses racing quite like a World Cup. The prospect of nations doing battle for the ultimate prize in their sport is mouth-watering to say the very least and now darts fans around the world can experience that feeling this coming Friday as the brand new PDC World Cup of Darts gets under way. And all the action is being screened live on Sky Sports.

This unique and exciting darting spectacle will see 24 nations compete for the crown and the teams ranked 9-24 kick off the action in Friday afternoon’s first round. For those unfamiliar with the format, the winners will join the other top eight ranked nations in that evening’s second round schedule. The second round winners will then progress into Saturday’s group stages, which consist of two groups of four. The top two nations from each group will then qualify for the semis.

Local talent Mick McGowan and William O’Connor will be flying the flag for Ireland and should they overcome their opening clash against the Slovakian pair of Peter Martin & Oto Zmelik, they will then take on the formidable duo of the number 3 seeds Australian, which will be represented by Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson.

England’s duo of Phil Taylor and James Wade will be desperate to put their recent disappointments behind them with a tournament victory here. ‘The Power’ was dumped out of the recent Grand Slam by Steve Beaton at the semi-final stage and Wade was surprisingly beaten 16-12 in the final by Scott Waites after storming into an 8-0 lead. The bookies however feel that the world’s top two individuals will get back on track this weekend and are offering a very short and unappealing price of 4/11, which is generally available. However, punters looking for value should definately consider Australia and Scotland.

Robert Thornton and the fans favourite Gary Anderson will be representing the Scots and both men showed good form throughout last month’s Grand Slam, with Anderson narrowly losing in the quarter-finals, which culminated with a respectable tournament average of 95.67. Thornton also progressed from his group with three straight wins and that included a victory over world number four Simon Whitlock. So that being said, the standout 11/1 with Paddy Power certainly looks tempting. The Australian duo of Whitlock and Nicholson did have a poor Grand Slam but punters should not be put off by that. These are two of the heaviest scorers in the game and Whitlock is one of the best finishers, if not the best, in the game. That mix of high scoring and deadly finishing could see the pair go a long way here and the general price of 6/1 does look decent.

If Scott Waites’ recent Grand Slam win is anything to go by, then some big upsets could be on the cards during the tournament and if punters want to get a run for their money with a real outsider, then the Welsh may be the way to go. Barry Bates and Mark Webster have shown that they are no pushovers and if they can get a bit of momentum going, then there is no reason why they can’t push the big boys all the way. They’re the outside value bet but Australia and Scotland are the teams to side with this week.

Recommendations

2pts win Australia @ 6/1 (Paddy Power, Stan James)
1 pt e/w Scotland @ 11/1 (Paddy Power)

Umm. I have never looked forward to a darts tournament less. They're even giving away free tickets to it.

The price of a player would generally determine whether he causes a shock or not. So tell me what price Waites was Nilsson???

Yeah Beaton beat Taylor in the semi but then the final was contested by Wade & Waites. The powers that be felt that by beating Taylor he had already done enough and told him not to bother with the final

bit harsh on Beaton that despite beating Taylor at the 'semi-final stage' he wasn't even allowed to play in the final!

So to summarise:

A long shot won another tournament somewhere, so they might here. They were English, so we like Wales.

However, we're not going to tip Wales because the chances are they won't win, so instead we're going to tip Scotland because they played well and form is important and Australia because they didn't play well, but should come good.

Not only that, but we're going to tip them at a god awful site where most people can't get a bet on, because they're an affiliate partner.
