Has died at the age of 55. A somewhat forgotten figure, probably because he didn't play in the 2005 Ashes series, but at times around the turn of the millenium was undoubtedly one of if not THE best English batsman.

Had all the ability and some great innings for England when they were far from the best test team. A shame he couldn't contribute in the 2005 series when we won back the ashes but younger players were chosen for that series ... RIP

KP was chosen rightly for that Ashes but Thorpe was a very good player for England

My own memory of him was the bravery he showed at Sabina Park in 2004. England found themselves 3 down in their first innings and Tino Best and Fidel Edwards chucking it down at 94.5 mph out of the backdrop of the Blue Mountains in Jamaica. It was really dark and he and Nasser Hussein showed immense courage facing that barrage to turn things round and England went on to win the series 3-0. I had been waiting 30 years for that hurt to end and was there to see my first bucket list item achieved.

He was a proper old school pro and a real shame he went so young.

This is absolutely awful news, only 55 years old.

I'm a Surrey man all my life, the Oval is only three miles from me, and I have great memories of him playing for both club and country.
Very sad to her of him of him passing.

Always good to watch, a bit of class about his batting.

Out for 55. Such a shame.

RIP.

remember him in pakistan (karachi?) winning the series when it was almost dark.

RIP

I remember him hitting the winning run leaving his Surrey teammate and debutant on 99 not on when they had all the time in the World . I was absolutely astonished that. He certainly was no nonsense!

Also a very good slip catcher.
RIP.

He was a troubled soul, so very very sad, he would be in my England team of players since 2000.

Ahead of Root or Pietersen?

Not in my team although tbf the kwality of the bowling was a lot better then
Report elisjohn August 11, 2024 7:46 PM BST
must agree with whispering, quality of the bowling was so much better

My favourite England player of the 90s early 2000s always dug in and gave absolutely everything for England some outstanding innings as previously mentioned. Sad news coming out this morning his family have confirmed it was suicide after a failed attempt in 2022. Sleep well mr Thorpe thanks for the memories hope you find peace.

Didn't somebody write a book about cricketers and suicide ?
Report dambuster August 12, 2024 4:19 PM BST
I'd have Thorpe ahead of Petersen, he wasn't a team player . even though Petersen's average was 2.62 runs better .
But thats only my opinion

Yes absolutely awful for his family

It is hard to understand that type of depression.

So sad that he was so loved by his family.
Report SlippyBlue August 12, 2024 8:24 PM BST
B.T.P. have said that he was killed by a train at Esher station on Sunday 4th August.

Just terribly tragic, his poor family.

you thick they've got it all but there's always something missing. so sad for him, his family and lets not forget the train driver, it'll haunt him for the rest of his life if he jumped in front of the train, Tragic all round.
