Well, well.

Not gonna be a draw, guys.
Report brentford February 23, 2024 8:42 AM GMT
fantastic stuff from Rooty and Foakes...pitch a bit quieter with the older ball but a few in that last half hour to give England plenty of encouragement..
Report brentford February 23, 2024 10:35 AM GMT
what a knock that is...Rooty back on it...helps when you don't gift it of course Mischief

I never doubted this blokes kwality!

Shame and a pox upon the Houses of those who slagged him off

Shows some of the others what Test Cricket is all about

Stokes could do with some marketing and communicational skills!

I like his attitude and Captaincy but his media relations are rubbish.

The Captaincy of the England Cricket team is an Official Office of State.
Report Aptdemon February 23, 2024 10:50 AM GMT
Imagine the vitriol if England had taken five wickets in 24 overs with a hard ball, then two tailenders in 60+ overs with an aging ball...

...and then Stokes didn't take a new ball when available.
Report brentford February 23, 2024 10:52 AM GMT
curious choice from India not to at least take it for 4 or 5 overs..
Report Aptdemon February 23, 2024 10:53 AM GMT
This is such a weird day that I can't decide what I think.

Felt *so* difficult from ball one, but it now appears slow.

I'd feel happier, and more confident from an England perspective, if it had only been Root looking solid...
Report brentford February 23, 2024 10:55 AM GMT
still the odd one keeping low...early overs with 2nd new ball will indicate true state of pitch you'd feel..
Report Whisperingdeath February 23, 2024 10:58 AM GMT
I am on Engerland at 3.8 atm

Think they are in a strong position. Not an easy pitch to score fluently but I dis do have batsmen used to playing on this type of wicket. I suspect some attrition. England batting 90 overs plus….. wow……. Stokes out….. boring boring England!

It’s been a great series so far
Report Aptdemon February 23, 2024 11:00 AM GMT
Market just feels wrong, but not sure precisely when/how.

Breaching 300, we are only now returning to the prices when England were 225/5...
Report brentford February 23, 2024 11:00 AM GMT
Rohit quite relaxed about cheap runs..either s*** captain or thinks pitch will play ok tommorow...
Report differentdrum February 23, 2024 11:05 AM GMT
Thank goodness for a bit of sensible, old fashioned cricket. Hopefully, they can get another 50+, and give themselves a chance.
Report Whisperingdeath February 23, 2024 11:14 AM GMT
I don’t think Rohit has covered himself in glory this series

Where will the pitch go? Can India ground and pound the inexperienced England spinners?

This really has been a hard fought series and either side had the chances to be 3-0 up in this series.
Report Whisperingdeath February 23, 2024 11:15 AM GMT
Market does feel wrong. Far better to be in England right now.
Report Whisperingdeath February 23, 2024 11:16 AM GMT
Tbf to Rohit the Ollie Pope review was borderline genius
Report Whisperingdeath February 23, 2024 11:17 AM GMT
I like Gough. He is right. See how the new ball fares in the morning. I am half tempted to lump on England right now
Report Try My Best February 24, 2024 6:07 PM GMT
Great innings from Root. Amazing what happens when you play straight. Robinson reverse sweep and out Anderson reverse sweep and out. So so silly.
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 5:23 AM GMT
Forget the wicket, batting is easiest at Ranchi once you're seven down.

Umpire's call on leg stump?
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 6:58 AM GMT
Yup, thought it was missing leg 'til I saw the replay.
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 7:00 AM GMT
Gosh, do we have a Test match now...

What a series!
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 7:10 AM GMT
As Swanny's just said - and at risk of repeating myself - Duckett will be livid.

He looked awful (out three times) for his 20 odd on the third morning of 3rd Test when he put away his attacking shots.

One of a very rare breed who looks to be in more jeopardy relying on his defence.

Equally, and moreover, not many match situations where one of his rapid 43s would be more valuable than here...
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 7:11 AM GMT
Beautiful shots from Crawley Love
Report brentford February 25, 2024 7:14 AM GMT
yep, Duckett not really got a proper defence...don't see any issue with him always going pretty hard...

Crawley a player that always looks better playing shots as well...some beautiful conventional shots as well..Love
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 7:19 AM GMT
Test-Duckett is England's equivalent of opening with T20-Narine.

Not everyone will be in favour, but whatever...do not get out blocking.
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 7:47 AM GMT
I am seriously biased.

Pope gets an unparalleled worldie review first up (>2.5m down wicket), then an umpire's call. Out twice in three deliveries.

Root then gone LBW without the entirety of the ball in line with stumps when pitching, when hitting pad, or when hitting stumps Cool
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 7:47 AM GMT
And bizarrely, Root's dismissal easily the most convincing of the three Laugh
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 8:10 AM GMT
Excellent start this, especially from 19/2.
Report brentford February 25, 2024 8:16 AM GMT
some good running by Eng...still not sure what wins this..250-260 certainly feels very defendable but as long way from bullet proof..played a lot better than it should with the size of those cracks..
Report Whisperingdeath February 25, 2024 8:22 AM GMT
Poor shot from Crawley. Chance is a second innings hundred thrown away.

He is developing into a good opener however. England have been impressive after such a demoralising defeat
Report Whisperingdeath February 25, 2024 8:26 AM GMT
I have no problem with DRS. It works pretty well. Umpires call is actually a good thing otherwise what is the point of them?
Report brentford February 25, 2024 8:27 AM GMT
I like umpires call..have been a few that have looked a bit odd this series but just have to live with that assuming the tech is impartial..
Report Whisperingdeath February 25, 2024 8:28 AM GMT
Wow!

There you go apt! How do you feel about Umpires Call now!
Report Whisperingdeath February 25, 2024 8:30 AM GMT
How is the human eye supposed to deal with such close decisions? Good decision by Umpire re Stokes….. How Ironic!

Interesting to hear his views on that!
Report brentford February 25, 2024 8:31 AM GMT
India not reviewing a plum lbw..Crazy
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 8:31 AM GMT
I don't like it :)

Umpires used to make big calls in tennis, they're still there but their role is hugely diminished.

DRS has already done that to standing umps in cricket, just not as significantly - and I could make a decent case that if they invented the game today, there would be one and they'd be more akin to a tennis ump.

Hey ho, there a far bigger hills on which I'd die in this world so I'm happy to acquiesce. Blush
Report brentford February 25, 2024 8:32 AM GMT
just subjective anyway mate...
Report Whisperingdeath February 25, 2024 8:33 AM GMT
There’s my point too.

They expect an Umpire to call a tight decision but they did even realise that was pad first. Umpires are human. Technology is pretty damn good gif our sport.
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 8:33 AM GMT
On the match front...

200 could easily win this and at the same time it feels as if India could win this just as easily with 310/4...
Report Aptdemon February 25, 2024 8:35 AM GMT
I *love* DRS, btw...the degree of this love is why I think the whole lot should be handed over.

I trust it implicitly.
Report Whisperingdeath February 25, 2024 8:37 AM GMT
My God apt

How old are you?

Do you remember a player called Javed Miandad?

He was never given out lbw in Pakistan until, can’t remember exactly either a World Cup match with neutral umpires or a Test Match with neutral umpires

I am not saying we are in football stupidity territory by any means but we are arguing over minutiae, which, is ashley great as we can without vitriol unlike football

any news on Gough and Harmy talking up a 50 or 60 run lead as being massive..

game lost (probably) last night when Yadav helped steer it through when England were absolutely all over India...bit of a window today @ 3 down on the back of Crawley's knock as well...still deserve some credit again for competing so hard for much of the game when over matched in these conditions...

aside from the start to this chase - the morning session was easiest for batting in terms of balls mis-behaving even when the new one was taken..

Another false dawn.

They needed a 100 lead, but couldn't blast out the last three, and then followed it up with another horrible collapse. India then got off to a flyer, and the game is almost over. At least they will have another day off.

Report Aptdemon February 26, 2024 7:19 AM GMT
Aside from usual suspects who would complain at their grandchild's christening...I think what gets anyone who watches us is that we are soooooooooo close.

We've been favourites in each blooming match, in India! (I'd wager plenty that no other side has done that since that 2012 series you mention - and maybe we didn't in that one)

And we have a side made up of several very rough diamonds. Crikey, Bashir was playing club cricket six months ago Crazy

And we're missing one of the most promising Test batters in all of cricket. Not a stretch to think he'd have dropped at least one match-turner, especially when compared to JB.
Report brentford February 26, 2024 7:21 AM GMT
yep, I think the inexperience of the spinners especially makes it impressive...massive credit for the handling of them for the most part, though Bashir especially looks quite a talent..
Report Aptdemon February 26, 2024 7:29 AM GMT
Credit must go to India, too.

They're (so far) just about finding a way to stay ahead of our imposters.

Jaiswal is obscene & Jadeja - in these conditions - is the most valuable cricketer alive.

Incredible series, I wish it would go on and on.

(And start at 8am, not 4am)
Report brentford February 26, 2024 7:32 AM GMT

Those cheap 40 runs looked bad at the time, even worse now.

It's all very well praising England, but they quickly turned a winning position into a losing one. Given the position India found themselves in 5 wickets is a relatively comfortable win.
Report Whisperingdeath February 26, 2024 11:24 AM GMT
I agree a couple of lame finishes from England but it is no exaggeration that either side could possibly have ended 4-0 up at this stage.

England have done wonderfully well imho given what they have in their armoury. The young spinners have been a revelation and a drill isn’t call by Key and his team.

Our openers have performed better than expected. Root is pure class but has only come to the party in the first innings.

The middle order has let us down to a degree and Brook is absent. Remove YJB and put in Brook is one thing and also possibly Will Jack ( can’t remember why he is not here ).

All in all I think England have given us something to be proud of and our disappointment is merely a rejection of our hopes and aspirations.

Sadly the Bazball counter attack was missing yesterday at the very time it was needed.

I still think India and Rohit in particular were rattled in the first three Test’s.

Lest we forget India were without Kohli, Shami, Rahul, PANT ffs and Bumrah in this match. Jaiswal came of age, Jurel looks a Test player as does Safaraz in hone conditions

We should not get too despondent. It has been a brilliant series to watch with plenty of swings and they have Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep, who up to this point were relatively out bowled by our kids! Stats wise anyway.
Report Hayden February 26, 2024 4:25 PM GMT
As with every series the performance / outcome is partly measured on expectation levels so with that in mind even if England lose 4-1 i'd say the team have performed with some credit simply by keeping most tests competitive at various stages.

Certainly no need for any knee-jerking reaction and for me it's a tour to take the positives out of , build on the youthful promise and accept the realization that this is a series lost in India's backyard , so keep everything in perspective.

Good luck in the final test guys   Happy
